3 1. Introduction This report contains the results of two variety testing trials in Festuca arundinacea and Dactylis glomerata. The location of the trials was near Koge, Denmark. Trial number by Species Agronova Festuca arundinacea Dactylis glomerata The trials have been carried out by the GEP-unit at Gefion, Agronova, in 2008 for Barenbrug, Holland. 01 March 2010 Morten Lind Agronova Field Trials Gefion Gefion - Agronova Field Trials 3

5 2.3 Results To ensure full maturity at harvest all plots were swathed at the 9 th of July. The trial was harvested on the 17 th of July. In the following table results from harvest, seed analysis and analysis of variance is given. Analysis was done by Student-Newman-Keuls test where different letters indicate statistical significant difference at 95% level. 8 4. Trial comments Weather conditions for production of grass for seed in Denmark, Generally autumn was warm and sunny with less than normal precipitation and grasses continued growing longer than normal. Compared to normal, winter was rather warm with average temperatures above 0 ºC. Generally spring was favourable for grass for seed production but it was very dry and at the end of spring the crops was beginning to be short of water. In June the dry weather continued, however the trial site was blessed with a little rain so generally there were fine conditions for flowering. From start of July there were some rainy days which resulted in more difficult harvest than normal. All together, conditions at the trial site were favourable for grass for seed production except for lack of rain in late spring. Festuca arundinacea (Strandsvingel) Differences between varieties in yield were from (average) kg/ha, with Bariane as lowest yielding and Retu as highest yielding. Barolex, Emeraude, Karolina and Retu could not be separated statistically but they all yieldes significantly more than Bariane. Dactylis glomerata (Hundegræs) Differences between varieties in yield were from (average) kg/ha, with Lumont as lowest yielding and Baraula as highest yielding. Varieties could not be separated statistically. Yield in the trials compared to predicted average yields in Denmark In the table below average yields from Barenbrug varieties in Gefion trials is compared to average predicted yields in Denmark Species Festuca arundinacae (Strandsvingel) Dactylis glomerata (Hundegræs) Average yields Barenbrug species (kg/ha)* Predicted average yields in Denmark (kg/ha) ** Average yields in Denmark relative over 5 years ** * Data from Gefion Barenbrug trials 2008 ** Data from: Tidsskrift for Frøavl Oktober November 2008 nr. 2.
