9 clutch lining Last month we mentioned that investigations are underway into the prospect of having some clutch plates lined with a modern friction material, in place of the traditional cork facings. These investigations are specifically in respect of 18/80 clutch plates, but in the meantime we have heard from the owner of a Flatnose 14/28 M.G. who has just had his clutch plates relined by a specialist firm, with a modern friction material which is commonly used in modern wet clutches for example in fork lift trucks. The corked plates on a 4-cylinder car are somewhat smaller in diameter than those on an 18/80, but the principal is the same i.e. the two plates each have cork protruding about 3mm each side of the plates. When the new friction material is bonded to each side of the plates, the surface must be machine-scored about 1.5mm deep, so that the oil can be thrown away from the plate by centrifugal force, in order for the clutch to work properly. The criss-cross pattern of these scores can be seen in the illustrations below. The two friction plates are at the top of the picture, bottom left is the centre plate and at bottom right, the pressure plate.
