1 4 th CERN Thematic School of Computing The Essentials Airport Arrival Sunday 22 May 2016 The CSC does not organise transport from the airport to MEDILS Conference Centre (the place where lodging and tuition will be provided). You are responsible for getting yourself to MEDILS. Ample information is provided on MEDILS How to Reach Us tab on their website. To summarise, here are the suggestions on how to get to MEDILS from the airport: Public transport: From airport to the Main Bus Station o Croatia Airlines provides a bus directly from the airport exit station to the main bus station in Split, the ticket price being HRK 30 (approximately EUR 4). Public transport: From Main Bus Station to MEDILS o The main bus station is located in the east part of the Split ferry harbor and is close to the main train station. o It is advised you then walk ~10 min to the western part of the harbour, near the St. Francis Church (Sveti Frane), where there are two options: take a taxi; you would pay around HRK take a bus, local line number 12 which would lead you straight to MEDILS (ask the bus driver for the MEDILS station), the ticket price is about 11 HRK. Taxi: From airport to MEDILS o Another option is to take a taxi directly from the airport to MEDILS, particularly if you can group up to spread the cost. o The price should be around 300 HRK, but we advise you to ask for the price in advance. In case of problem with local transportation, please contact: Ivica Puljak : Planned Late arrival In case you plan to arrive later than 19:00, please confirm your arrival time to Cath before Friday 20 th May. Note that the tcsc first dinner (Sunday 22 nd ) at MEDILS starts at 20:15 1

2 Accommodation You will be staying in MEDILS located on the Adriatic Sea coast, a couple of kilometres from the center of Split. As a result, it is not manned 100% of the time. Rooms are standard student rooms: they are simple, and provided with towel, soap and shampoo. There is no hair-dryer in the rooms nor a laundry service. Bring your own toiletries. Meals All meals will be onsite at MEDILS except Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening dinners. The location and website of these three offsite dinners are in the schedule. Registration Registration for tcsc2016 will take place in MEDILS on Sunday 22 May from 15:00 to 19:00. Make your way to the MEDILS main reception and you'll find us there. You will receive from the tcsc organizers your tcsc pack (instructions, booklet, tcsc badge, local tourist information) as well as your room key. Classes Classes will take place in MEDILS medium-size lecture room, and in the computer room for exercises. Direction will be provided when you arrive. 2

3 Computers/personal laptops - installing the VM During tcsc2016 you will be required to use your own laptop and install a local virtual machine to run the exercises. The virtual appliance file and instructions on how to set it up are available at the homepage of tcsc2016 under Materials > Virtual appliance, or directly at these links (also at end of this document): tcsc2016.ova, set-up instructions. You will have received a login and password by already. Please download and set up the virtual appliance before the beginning of the school, ready for the first class on Monday. Any questions - ask our Technical Manager Nikos. Sports and free time On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, you have a free time period between the morning and the late afternoon sessions. This free time may be devoted to learning, discussions with lecturers and/or recreational activities including sports and/or swimming in the sea. We have a special sports outing on Wednesday afternoon: we will be rafting on a river upstream of the beautiful city of Omis, south of Split. Sports Clothes to bring Bring with you sport clothes (eg t-shirt, shorts) and shoes, as well as a swimming costume and a spare towel. You will also need some sport shoes or sturdy sandals to scramble over the rocks to get to the beach. The rocks are sharp and bare feet risk getting cut! For the rafting, you will need to bring clothes you don't mind getting wet. You should bring: sport shoes (or sturdy watersport sandals which attach with clips/velcro) which you don't mind getting wet, a windproof cagoule or K-Way or similar, light clothes (e.g. T-shirt), full change of clothing (warmer clothes) for after rafting. 3

4 Weather Weather forecast for the week predicts between 14 to 25 degrees Celsius, with a few spring rains. The spring rains rains can be torrential, so bring some warmer clothes and a rain jacket. Miscellaneous May we remind you that: Any extra costs incurred by your during the stay will not be covered by the school organization. Smoking is banned at MEDILS.
