2 Tuesday 29th May 2018 Use the Force Energy is everywhere, transforming all the time. Brace yourself as we travel back in time and use classic toys to investigate the science of motion! Examine how Newton's forces play a role in the universe. Forces of Flight - How are we able to fly when gravity pulls us down? Let's look at the forces involved in flight. Equal and Opposite forces - How strong is a vacuum? Can we have a tug of war using air pressure? Make - design and construct your own catapult. Potential and Kinetic energy - Look at wind up toys, springs and yo-yos to see how stored energy changes to moving energy. Friction - Test the cars on the tracks and see if you can be the fastest car down the track using the different surfaces. Slowest marble run - How slow can you go? What forces can affect the marble? Air takes up space - See how air can be an opposing force and used to create tornados and fill parachutes. Make - a balloon powered car.

Centripetal Force - Explore how this force is used in the lab, at amusement parks, in gyroscopes and even washing machines! Make - Whirling hex nut balloon. What makes polymers so fun is that how they act depends on what kinds of molecules they're made up of and how they're put together. Find out which ones are rubbery, sticky, gooey or hard! Super absorbing polymer; investigate a compound which can absorb up to 25 times its own weight. Shrinking plastic; make a key ring with this smart material that shrinks with heat. Non-Newtonian fluid; discover a mixture that has the properties of both a solid and a liquid. Silky play-dough; use household ingredients to make this tactile dough.
