12 TESS Science Reqirements Search over 200,000 stars to discover transi:ng exoplanets with periods < 10 days and radii < 2.5 Re orbi:ng the brightest stars in the solar neighborhood and discover transi:ng exoplanets with radii at least 2.5 Re distribted across the celes:al sphere. Seach for transi:ng exoplanets with periods p to 120 days among the ~10,000 stars in regions srronding the eclip:c poles; Determine the masses for at least 50 transikng exoplanets with radii < 4 Re sing grond-based follow-p resorces or other methods. 5/6/18 12
13 JWST Target Working Grop Points colored by instella:on Loie+2018 TESS will find hndreds of sper-earths to Neptne-size planets capable of prodcing higher S/N than known exoplanets bt only a few terrestrial-size planets bexer than TRAPPIST-1, etc 13

16 Target Selec8on for Follow-Up TESS will find very few terrestrial-size planets with NIRISS S/N bexer than known exoplanets like TRAPPIST-1, GJ1132b, LHS1140b (thogh dependent on assmed planet occrrence rate). TESS will find hndreds of sper-earths to Neptne-size planets capable of prodcing higher S/N than known exoplanets. Predicted S/N is sensi:ve to assmed planet composi:on. Mass determina:ons are important for target selec:on and the interpreta:on of JWST data. RV target selec:on based on TESS science goals are not necessarily synergis:c with ftre needs of JWST commnity. 16
17 Ephemerides Spitzer, HST, other transit observa:ons will be important for maintaining accracy of transit ephemerides. Spitzer ops extended n:l Webb is opera:onal (2016 Senior Review) 17
18 Le[er to JSTUC from Exoplanet Commnity Legacy exoplanet science with JWST: demographics of exoplanet atmospheres over a range of star types, planet sizes, and instella:on levels. Proposal-pressre driving telescope alloca:on across sbdisciplines seems to be at odds with the desire for a strategic srvey. 18
19 Conclsions Sccessfl lanch, nominal commissioning and orbit inser:on to date. Science ops schedled to begin late Jne, early Jly. Sector 1 4 qick-look pipeline and rapid follow-p may yield interes:ng targets in :me for Cycle 1 proposal deadline. Sector 1 4 data and TOI catalog will be released December 2018, in advance of the Cycle 1 deadline. Monthly cadence therea\er (assming nominal instrment and pipeline performance). Separate Follow-Up and JWST Working Grops may have compe:ng interests, different reqirements, and different priori:es. Commnity has raised concerns abot the feasibility of longterm, large srveys and :me alloca:on across disciplines. 19
