4 JWST Data & Calls for Proposals The Director will seek recommendations Cy1 science obs begin from a multi disciplinary GTO Cy2 deadline committee of experts for up to GO Cy2 CP released medium scale proposals (between 12 (early)-2019 GO Cy2 deadline about hours) for observation and Cy2 science obs begin funding. Limited (non-proprietary) data available to the community for Cycle 2 Proposals.

5 JWST DDT and ERS To accelerate the process of discovery, and maximize the science value of observations conducted over JWST s lifetime, STScI Director Ken Sembach will allocate 500 hours of Director s Discretionary time for an Early Release Science (DD ERS) program. The Director will seek recommendations from a multi disciplinary committee of experts for up to 12 medium scale proposals (between about hours) for observation and funding. Proposals are invited in the following areas of study: Solar System Extra Solar Planets & Planet Formation Formation and Evolution of Stars; Stellar Populations Gas and Dust (ISM) Physics Galaxy Populations and Evolution Early Universe and Cosmology

10 DD-ERS Data Products Building blocks for GO programs APT files available at Cy1 CP release Enables Cy1 archival programs Provides kernels for cohesive science based training sets Observation & proposal planning Data reduction and analysis cookbooks Examples 1. Participation in community briefings organized by STScI written/oral updates on progress written/oral documentation of lessons learned 2. Software with documentation data analysis and modeling enhanced data processing 3. Enhanced data products with documentation aligned multiband images, extracted spectra, etc catalogs

11 ERS Needs for Solar System What do we have: Bright, extended objects Nearby scattered light Moving targets Dynamic objects Seasonal variations Commissioning will cover: Scattered light (Stansberry talk) Moving target tracking

12 Possible ERS Themes Nearby scattered light Targets with limited observing windows Target acquisition (NIRSpec) Fast moving targets Various observing modes (ambush?)

13 GTO & GO Time GTO (guaranteed time observer) target lists final prior to GO-1 call for proposals (~late 2017) Joint joint US-Europe-Canada TAC, selection on scientific merit GO-1 (general observer) proposals due early 2018 (process & tools similar to HST) Science Operations start ~ April, 2019 First 5 years: 80% GO, 10% DD (Director s Discretionary), 10% GTO Second 5 years 90% GO, 10% DD Allocation by major science field will reflect fraction of the total available time requested so ask! Analysis funding from NASA for successful US-based proposers

Two before GO deadline (2018Feb). Geographically distributed. 2-3 days at ST and Caltech; complete schedule ½ day workshops with multiple showtimes at AAS 5 Science Workshops and support for other major meetings (CSA, ESA)
