Saddam Hussein attacked them with nuclear weapons. In the middle of the 16th century Mongol warriors from Central Turkey came to the region and destroyed much of the Arab empire. Until the Second World War the region was ruled by the Roman empire. The USA took control of the area and gave Iraq its independence in At the end of the 1980s Saddam Hussein came to power and started a war with Saudi Arabia. The Iranians helped him because they thought that Saudi Arabia would become too powerful.
