Galena Park Independent Schl District Summer Reading Acknwledgement AP Language Date: Hme Campus: Grade Level: 11th I understand that I have chsen t be enrlled in Advanced Placement English Language Arts fr the academic year. I understand that I must cmplete the attached summer reading requirement and that it will be fr a grade. I als understand that I will be tested n the infrmatin included in the reading. The assignments are due t my teacher by September 10, 2015 (Mnday). Failure t cmplete the assignment will negatively affect my grade. Fr every day the prject is late, 10 pints will be deducted frm my ttal grade, up t a maximum f 50 pints. Student Signature Parent Signature 1

English III AP Summer Assignment Due: September 10 th * Late plicy will fllw district guidelines. Each day an assignment is late the student will lse ten pints (ne letter grade). After five days the assignment will n lnger be accepted. Curse Gals The gals and the requirements f the AP English Language and Cmpsitin curse are significantly different frm thse f a regular English curse. As this is a cllegelevel curse, perfrmance expectatins are apprpriately high, and the wrklad is challenging. Students are expected t cmmit t a minimum f five hurs f curse wrk per week utside f class. Often, this wrk invlves lng-term writing and reading assignments, s effective time management is imprtant. A Time Management and Study Habits class is held at the beginning f the schl year in cncert with Junir Orientatin, and AP students are required t attend. A Learning Plan wrksheet has been prvided in this packet s students may rganize the summer assignment int manageable tasks. Summer reading and writing are als required t rient students t the fllwing bjectives: anntatin, accunting fr purpse and cntext, and recgnizing strategies and tactics used in literature. Students are required t keep a reading respnse jurnal, which will cunt as the first tw daily grades f the fall semester. Rhetrical Devices A list f rhetrical devices has been included in this packet s that students may becme familiar with the terminlgy. Students will make ntecards f these terms. Students shuld use the Learning Plan t rganize study time and manage the infrmatin int smaller tasks. Required Reading: students will pick ne f the tw readings In Cld Bld by Truman Capte The Autbigraphy f Benjamin Franklin by Benjamin Franklin 2

Guidelines: 1. Yu will nt receive credit fr any frm f plagiarized wrk. Be yur wn persn and use yur wn brain. 2. Late assignments will be strngly penalized. Dn t risk it! 3. If yu have questins ver the summer, yu can reach yur teacher at the fllwing addresses: GALENA PARK: jevra1@galenaparkisd.cm NSSH: aharrisn@galenaparkisd.cm 4. All grades will cunt fr the first six weeks and will be assessed prir t the end f the first grading perid Daily Grades: Dialectical Jurnal Rhetrical Terms Nte Cards *Dialectical Jurnal shuld be typed in MLA style. MLA style encmpasses the fllwing: 12 pint Times New Rman fnt. Duble Spaced 1 margins Apprpriate header (name, curse and date) Apprpriate page numbering (last name #)

DIALECTICAL JOURNALS The term Dialectic means the art r practice f arriving at the truth by using cnversatin invlving questin and answer. Think f yur dialectical jurnal as a series f cnversatins with the texts we read during this curse. The prcess is meant t help yu develp a better understanding f the texts we read. PROCEDURE: As yu read, chse passages that stand ut t yu and recrd them in the left-hand clumn f a T-chart (ALWAYS include page numbers). In the right clumn, write yur respnse t the text (ideas/insights, questins, reflectins, and cmments n each passage) If yu chse, yu can label yur respnses using the fllwing cdes: (Q) Questin ask abut smething in the passage that is unclear (C) Cnnect make a cnnectin t yur life, the wrld, r anther text (P) Predict anticipate what will ccur based n what s in the passage (CL) Clarify answer earlier questins r cnfirm/disaffirm a predictin (R) Reflect think deeply abut what the passage means in a brad sense nt just t the characters in the stry. What cnclusins can yu draw abut the wrld, abut human nature, r just the way things wrk? (E) Evaluate - make a judgment abut the character(s), their actins, r what the authr is trying t say Sample Dialectical Jurnal entry: THE THINGS THEY CARRIED by Tim O Brien Passages frm the text Pg#s Cmments & Questins -they carried like freight trains; they carried it n their backs and shulders-and fr all the ambiguities f Vietnam, all the mysteries and unknwns, there was at least the single abiding certainty that they wuld never be at a lss fr things t carry. Pg 2 (R) O brien chses t end the first sectin f the nvel with this sentence. He prvides excellent visual details f what each slider in Vietnam wuld carry fr day-t-day fighting. He makes yu feel the physical weight f what sldiers have t carry fr simple survival. When yu cmbine the emtinal weight f lved nes at hme, the fear f death, and the respnsibility fr the men yu fight with, with this physical weight, yu start t understand what sldiers in Vietnam dealt with every day. This qute sums up the cnfusin that the men felt abut the reasns they were fighting the war, and hw they clung t the nly certainty - things they had t carry - in a cnfusing wrld where nrmal rules were suspended.

CHOOSING PASSAGES FROM THE TEXT: Lk fr qutes that seem significant, pwerful, thught prvking r puzzling. Fr example, yu might recrd: Effective &/r creative use f stylistic r literary devices Passages that remind yu f yur wn life r smething yu ve seen befre Structural shifts r turns in the plt A passage that makes yu realize smething yu hadn t seen befre Examples f patterns: recurring images, ideas, clrs, symbls r mtifs. Passages with cnfusing language r unfamiliar vcabulary Events yu find surprising r cnfusing Passages that illustrate a particular character r setting RESPONDING TO THE TEXT: Yu can respnd t the text in a variety f ways. The mst imprtant thing t remember is that yur bservatins shuld be specific and detailed. Yu can write as much as yu want fr each entry. Yu can use lseleaf paper fr yur jurnals r dwnlad the template frm the Authr Study page n the ESA web site. Basic Respnses Raise questins abut the beliefs and values implied in the text Give yur persnal reactins t the passage Discuss the wrds, ideas, r actins f the authr r character(s) Tell what it reminds yu f frm yur wn experiences Write abut what it makes yu think r feel Agree r disagree with a character r the authr Sample Sentence Starters: I really dn t understand this because I really dislike/like this idea because I think the authr is trying t say that This passage reminds me f a time in my life when If I were (name f character) at this pint I wuld This part desn t make sense because This character reminds me f (name f persn) because Higher Level Respnses Analyze the text fr use f literary devices (tne, structure, style, imagery) Make cnnectins between different characters r events in the text Make cnnectins t a different text (r film, sng, etc ) Discuss the wrds, ideas, r actins f the authr r character(s) Cnsider an event r descriptin frm the perspective f a different character Analyze a passage and its relatinship t the stry as a whle

Summer Reading Dialectical Jurnal Instructins Students will create a dialectical jurnal based n the essential questins belw. Students need t utilize 3 qutes per questin (ttal 12). In Cld Bld Essential Questins: Hw des Capte characterize the relatinship, bth said and unsaid, between Dick and Perry? Hw is Capte s stance n capital punishment established in Part IV, The Crner?
