Science Fair Prject Set Up Instructins 1) Hypthesis Statement 2) Materials List 3) Prcedures 4) Safety Instructins 5) Data Table 1) Hw t write a HYPOTHESIS STATEMENT Use the fllwing frmat: If (IV) is (increased, decreased, changed), then (DV) will (increase, decrease, change) because (reasn based n prir research). Hyptheses Tips A hypthesis is a statement, nt a questin. Yur hypthesis is nt the scientific questin in yur prject. The hypthesis is an educated, testable predictin abut what will happen. Make it clear. A gd hypthesis is written in clear and simple language. Reading yur hypthesis shuld tell a teacher r judge exactly what yu thught was ging t happen when yu started yur prject. Keep the variables in mind. A gd hypthesis defines the variables in easy-t-measure terms, like wh the participants are, what changes during the testing, and what the effect f the changes will be. Make sure yur hypthesis is "testable." T prve r disprve yur hypthesis, yu need t be able t d an experiment and take measurements r make bservatins t see hw tw things (yur variables) are related. Yu shuld als be able t repeat yur experiment ver and ver again, if necessary. T create a "testable" hypthesis make sure yu have dne all f these things: Thught abut what experiments yu will need t carry ut t d the test. Identified the variables in the prject. Included the independent and dependent variables in the hypthesis statement. (This helps ensure that yur statement is specific enugh. D yur research. Yu may find many studies similar t yurs have already been cnducted. What yu learn frm available research and data can help yu shape yur prject and hypthesis.
2) Hw t create a MATERIALS LIST Yur materials list shuld be a very clear descriptin f exactly what yu need fr yur prject r experiment. It shuld be s exact, that smene wh wanted t d yur same experiment culd g t the stre with yur list and buy exactly the same things and exactly the same amunt f everything that yu used. D nt include the things that are nt directly related t perfrming yur experiment, like paper and a printer t recrd yur bservatins r pens and pencils needed t recrd results. This list is nly fr things that yu need t d the science f the prject.
3) Hw t write PROCEDURES Yur prcedures need t be NUMBERED. r Step #1, Step #2, etc. 1) 2) 3) etc. The prcedures are a set f very specific instructin abut hw yu are ging t cnduct yur experiment. Yur prject prcedures need t be clear and specific s that yur science fair prject culd be REPEATABLE. This means that smene else culd perfrm yur experiment by fllwing yur detailed prcedures and GET THE SAME RESULTS. Cnsider the image belw. What happened t the sandwich n the left? Sadly, n ne culd eat the sandwich n the left. It desn't even lk like a sandwich! The prblem is a lack f detail. If yu have never made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, the very precise and detailed directins n the right wuld be necessary t make the sandwich crrectly. Details are the mst imprtant part f any experiment because withut detail, it wuld be nearly impssible fr smene else t replicate yur experiment.
4) What is meant fr SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS? The purpse f including safety instructins in yur scientific prcedures is t identify any precautins that may need t be fllwed in cmpleting this experiment. Safety shuld be a primary cncern fr every science experiment. Even thugh yu might nt think yur prject has safety cncerns, almst any tl r technique, n matter hw safe, can be used in an unsafe manner. At the same time, many ptentially dangerus tls are perfectly safe if they are used in the prper way. Answer sme/all f the fllwing questins t determine what areas might pse a ptential safety cncern. Make sure yu address all safety issues in yur prject prpsal s yur adult supervisrs are aware f any issues ahead f time. Yur teacher will then evaluate yur prject based n the fllwing questins: Where will the experiment be perfrmed? What safety gear will be used? Wh will be supervising the experiment? Are yu knwledgeable abut r d yu have training in the prcedures being used? Tips fr writing Safety Precautins First give a shrt descriptin f the rule and then give a reasn why each rule applies t yur experiment. Safeguarding yur experiment culd be ne f yur precautins. Example: 1. N Hrseplay because gfing arund might break smething r hurt the experiment, meaning I wuld have t start all ver again.
5) Hw t setup a DATA TABLE Include all f YOUR prject variables int the table frmat shwn belw. Dn t frget t include units f measure where applicable. (metric) Adjust yur table if yu happen t have mre than 3 trials r levels. Include yur CONTROL GROUP as ne f the levels (labeled as CONRORL). Yur Data Table must be frmatted like this: Nte: The rugh draft f yur data table may be created by hand n ntebk paper. Yur final draft will be mre frmal. Here is a link with additinal instructins n: Hw t Create a Data Table in Excel
