2 Function nd system design Mesuring principle The resistnce temperture detector (RTD) element hs n electricl resistnce with vlue of 100 Ω t 0 C (32 F). It is commonly known s Pt100 nd complies with IEC This resistnce vlue increses t higher tempertures ccording to the chrcteristics of the sensor mteril (pltinum). These kinds of sensors re clled Positive Temperture Coefficient elements (PTC). The coefficient is fixed with α = C -1, clculted between 0 nd 100 C (32 nd 212 F), ccording to ITS90 (Interntionl Temperture Scle). Mesuring system TMT162R TMT162R_G_dd_07_xx_04 The TMT162R RTD ssembly comprises mesuring insert with Pt100 sensor element nd the itemp TMT162 field trnsmitter which cn be configured using the HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus or PROFI- BUS PA protocol. A thermowell cn be ordered seprtely. The Pt100 sensor element complies with IEC nd withstnds lods tht typiclly occur in the most common industril processes. The wire wound (WW) version of the sensor is supplied nd is locted in the tip of the mesuring insert. The mesuring insert is replceble unit nd is instlled in thermowell. A spring system presses the mesuring insert ginst the bse of the thermowell to improve the trnsmission of het. The trnsmitter housing is mde of die-cst luminum or stinless steel. It cn be purchsed with or without n LC disply. The minimum degree of protection, IP65, is chieved by seling glnds t the cble entry nd the thermometer connection. Depending on the customer's requirements, customers cn choose from thermowells constructed from welded tubes nd thermowells mde of drilled brstock mteril. The thermowells re vilble in vrious shpes nd sizes nd with wide rnge of process connections (thred, flnge or weldon connections, see pge 12). 3 Process pressure/flow velocity The lod limits of the thermometer depend on the thermowell used nd re listed in the technicl informtion specific to the individul thermowells (see pge 12). Fctors tht ffect the lod limits include the process pressure, flow velocity, density of the medium, temperture, immersion depth, length of the thermowell in the flowing medium etc. In criticl situtions, lod cpcity clcultion for the thermowell cn be ordered from Endress+Huser. The 4-wire technology is the optimum connection method for RTDs. Here, the mesurement is effected by mens of mesuring nd supply circuit, mking it completely independent of the properties of the cble. When using Pt100 sensors, Clss A or 1/3DIN B, it is lwys presumed tht 4-wire mesurement is crried out in ccordnce with IEC since the best mesuring results cn be obtined in prctice in this wy. 5 Instlltion instructions Instlltion exmples T09-TMT162RC-11-xx-xx-xx-003 A: In pipes with smll cross section the sensor tip should rech or extend slightly pst the center line of the pipe (= L). B, D: Tilted instlltion C: Flnged instlltion The immersion length of the thermometer influences the ccurcy. If the immersion length is too smll then errors in the mesurement re cused by het conduction vi the process connection nd the pipe wll. If instlling into pipe then the immersion length must be hlf of the pipe dimeter, idelly. Instlltion possibilities: Pipes, tnks or other plnt components Minimum immersion length = 80 to 100 mm (3.15 to 3.94 in) The immersion length must be t lest 8 times the protection tube dimeter. Exmple: Protection tube dimeter 12 mm (0.47 in) x 8 = 96 mm (3.8 in). Recommended stndrd immersion length ccording to DIN 43772: 120 mm (4.72 in) ATEX certifiction: Alwys tke note of the instlltion regultions!! Note! When operting in smll nominl bore pipes it must be gurnteed tht the protection tube tip is long enough to extend pst the pipe center line (see Pos. A nd B). A further solution could be n ngled (tilted) instlltion (see Pos. C nd D). When determining the immersion length ll thermometer prmeters nd the process to be mesured must be tken into ccount (e.g. flow velocity, process pressure). In the cse of pipes in which the direction of flow chnges, extreme cution should be exercised when selecting the mesuring point since these flows cn cuse the mesured vlue to fluctute. With regrd to corrosion, the choice of mteril for the thermowell is prticulrly importnt. If the thermometer is to be disssembled into its individul component prts, the specified tightening torques hve to be observed when subsequently ressembling the thermometer in order to comply with the IP protection clss of the coupling between the field trnsmitter nd thermowell. 7 In ddition to the stndrd versions listed, neck tubes with specific lengths cn be ordered s prt of the product structure for the mesuring insert. As illustrted in the following figure, the neck tube length my influence the temperture in the field trnsmitter. It is necessry tht this temperture is kept within the limit vlues defined in the chpter "Operting conditions". Heting of the field trnsmitter consequent to the process temperture. Temperture in the field trnsmitter = mbient temperture + ΔT en Thermowell The ssembly is designed for instlltion in n existing thermowell, or thermowell tht hs to be ordered seprtely. For this purpose, the neck tube connection to the thermowell is vilble in vrious sizes. To mke selection esier, plese use the tble with the insertion lengths of the mesuring insert (ML) which is described in the next section. Mesuring insert Omnigrd S TMT162R, dimensions in mm (inch) T09-TMT162RC-04-xx-xx-xx-000 The insertion length (ML) of the mesuring insert cn be selected nywhere in the rnge between 50 nd 990 mm (1.97 nd 39 in). Electronics The itemp temperture field trnsmitter TMT162 is two-wire trnsmitter with nlog output or fieldbus protocol, two (optionl) mesuring inputs for resistnce thermometers in 2-wire, 3-wire or 4-wire connection (for one resistnce mesuring input). The LC disply shows the current mesured vlue digitlly nd s br grph with n indictor for lrms. Corrosion detection Corrosion of the sensor connections cn led to corruption of the mesured vlue. The field trnsmitter offers the option of detecting corrosion on thermocouples nd resistnce thermometers with 4-wire connection before mesured vlue corruption occurs. If the conductor resistnce exceeds plusible limits, the trnsmitter shows sttus messge on the disply nd forwrds the corresponding messge to the higher-order system vi HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus or PROFIBUS PA protocol. Optionl 2-chnnel functions These functions increse the relibility nd vilbility of the process vlues: Sensor bckup switches to redundnt sensor if primry sensor fils Temperture dependent switching between sensors, which hve dvntges in different rnges Drift lert or lrm if sensor 1 nd 2 devite from one nother 8 Endress+Huser
