The National Service Center purchases demographic and lifestyle information about the youth and families your council currently serve and about those who live in your council area who are not being served. New columns on these tables: Identify Sea Scouts separately from Venturers Indicate the number of units (Packs, Troops, Teams, etc.) associated with a Charter Organization in each ZIP code. WHAT ELSE IS NEW! New this year, the Research and Strategy department has secured a prospect list from InfoUSA. Each council can download a list of faith-based organizations; public, charter, and private schools; and civic organizations. This prospect list includes contact information and identifies units that are currently chartered. 4 THE MOSAIC SEGMENTATION SYSTEM BY EXPERIAN INFORMATION SOLUTIONS, INC. In this Market Analysis, the National Service Center provides a lifestyle analysis for your Cub Scout membership and the households in your council area. This analysis is intended to help your council: learn about the members your council currently serves identify the lifestyles and cultures of youth in your community who are underserved identify the ZIP codes in which these youth live Mosaic Segmentation provides an in depth look at your market, including: Basic demographics Ethnicity, culture, and languages Lifestyles and behaviors Values, attitudes, and religious and political preferences Consumer and entertainment preferences Major companies, such as Ford, Verizon, and Kroger rely on Mosaic Segmentation for their marketing decisions. While Scouts can be found in every Mosaic segment, these 30 segments have a higher potential for families with Scout-age youth. Councils may want to focus recruiting efforts on those areas with high numbers of households in the following segments. The top ten segments for all BSA youth are noted with an asterisk (*). 5 TOOLS FOR COUNCIL PLANNING DEMOGRAPHIC AND INCOME PROFILE (beginning on page 8) Learn about the general population in your council area. Note the income levels, educational attainment, and ethnicities, etc. Watch for trends from the 2010 Census to 2016 estimates to 2021 projections. Contact for similar data at the county, district, or other geographic areas. MAPS (beginning on page 10) Align districts by considering geography and available youth numbers. Select the best locations for: Scout shops Satellite offices Day camps District events Look for ways to make Scouting more visible in your council area. Opportunities for service projects Locate day camps and events Billboard campaigns Yard signs Public bulletin boards at stores, transportation stations, rec centers, community colleges, etc. Booths at fall festivals, sports fairs, event fairs The National Service Center can provide additional maps to meet your council s needs. 6 TOOLS FOR DISTRICT RECRUITMENT DATA TABLES BY ZIP CODE Cub Scouts - Boy Scouts Venturers, Sea Scouts, and Explorers (beginning on page 15) The data tables identify the target-age youth and youth members by program and ethnicity. TARGET-AGE (TAY) Cub Scout TAY includes boys ages six through 10 Boy Scout TAY includes boys ages 11 through 13 Venturing/Sea Scouts/Exploring TAY includes boys and girls ages 14 through 16 BSA HIP Based on the 2016 year end membership as reported by the councils The membership numbers are limited to the following: Pack, troop, team, crew, ship, and post members Members with a valid address WHO AND WHERE! Members who live in a ZIP code that is assigned to the council in which they are registered BSA Determined by dividing the number of members by the TAY, reported as a percentage UNITS The number of BSA units where the address of the chartering organization falls within the ZIP code RACE/ETHNICITY The percentage of each ethnicity within a ZIP code was applied to the TAY numbers Due to rounding, the totals will vary slightly from the TAY totals on JTE READING THE DATA TABLE High market share: this is where your current members live High TAY and low market share: this is your underserved population The data tables included in this Market Analysis are also available in Excel format at MyBSA > Resources tab > Council Market Analysis Reports > Select by Region, Area, and HQ city. 4
7 MOSIAC PROFILE (beginning on page 13) Your council s 2016 year-end Cub Scout members were identified by the Mosaic segment for the neighborhood in which they live. Review the Profile to determine the Mosaic segments you currently serve well. WHO! Review the Profile to determine the Mosaic segments with high numbers of households that you currently do not serve well. (Look for the High Potential segments on page 2.) Learn more about the lifestyles and demographics of these Mosaics from Mosaic Segmentation Highlights. You may want to select specific Mosaic segments to target for recruitment. READING THE MOSAIC PROFILE In the sample below, we can see that: 13.02% of the council s Cub Scouts (338 boys) are identified as Boomers and Boomerangs 15,458 of the households (8.19%) in the council area are identified as Boomers and Boomerangs The index is calculated to show that a youth in the Boomers and Boomerangs segment is 1.6 times more likely to join Cub Scouts than the average Cub Scout-age boy in the council. TOP FIVE MOSAIC SEGMENTS (Appendix) Each ZIP code in your council was analyzed to determine the five most predominant Mosaic segments. Download the Excel tables from MyBSA. You may want to sort by or select ZIP codes by district. Sort by Mosaic segment to determine which ZIP codes have the highest numbers of households that fall into your targeted Mosaic segments. You may want to focus your recruiting efforts on these ZIP codes. WHERE!
