1 ENGINEERING MECANIC (A2ME01) 15.1 COURE DECRIPTION: Course Code Course Title Course tructure A2ME01 Engineering Mechanics (MEC) Lectures Tutorials Practicals Credits Course Coordinator Mrs.Anuradha, Associate Professor,Mechanical Team of Instructors Mr.Zaheeruddin,Asst.Professor,Aero COURE OVERVIEW: Engineering Mechanics course is belongs to basic knowledge of mechanics. This course introduces the basic concepts of mechanical engineering which is the Foundation for all subjects of the Mechanical Engineering discipline This course is to introduce the basic principles of engineering mechanics with emphasis on their analysis and application to practical engineering problems PREREQUIITE: Level Credits Periods/Weeks Prerequisites UG 3 4 Understand basic knowledge of Engineering Mechanics and Principles 15.3 MARK DITRIBUTION: ession Marks (25M) Continuous Assessment Tests (Midterm tests): There shall be 2 midterm examinations. Each midterm examination consists of one objective paper, one subjective paper and four assignments. The objective paper is for 10 marks and subjective paper is for 10 marks, with duration of 1 hour 20 minutes (20 minutes for objective and 60 minutes for subjective paper). Objective paper is set for 20 bits of multiple choice questions, fill-in the blanks, 10 marks. ubjective paper contains of 4 full questions (one from each unit) of which, the student has to answer 2 questions, each question carrying 5 marks. First midterm examination shall be conducted for 2.5 units of syllabus and second midterm examination shall be conducted for another 2.5 units. University End Total Exam Marks Marks

2 5 marks are allocated for Assignments. First two assignments should be submitted before the conduct of the first mid, and the second two assignments should be submitted before the conduct of the second mid. The total marks secured by the student in each midterm examination are evaluated for 25 marks, and the average of the two midterm examinations shall be taken as the final marks secured by each candidate EVALUATION CEME:. No Component Duration Marks 1 I Mid Examination 1 hour and 20 min 20 2 I Assignment 5 3 II Mid Examination 1 hour and 20 min 20 4 II Assignment 5 MID Examination marks to be considered as average of above 2 MID s 5 External Examination 3 hours 75 Total 75 Course Objectives This course is to introduce the basic principles of engineering mechanics with emphasis on their analysis and application to practical engineering problems. After learning this course, you should have the ability to: I. olve for the resultants of any force systems II. Differentiates between different force systems III. Draw the FBD and find the internal and external forces acting on a body for coplanar and non coplanar force system IV. Differentiate between centroid and centre of gravity V. Calculate the CG for a given object VI. Using transfer formula/polar moment of inertia can calculate the moment of inertia for area and solids VII. Analyse the forces causing motion and calculates the friction Course Outcomes 1. tudents practice in applying their knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering and to expand this knowledge into the vast area of rigid body Mechanics. 2. tudents able to design by requiring the solution of open ended problems. 3. tudents are able to do various problems on Mechanics of olids, Mechanical Design and tructural Analysis.

N The basic knowledge of electronics, electrical components, computer architecture and applications of microcomputer systems, communications needed in data transport N=None =upportive =ighlyrelated YLLABU UNIT I Introduction to Engineering Mechanics Basic Concepts, Laws of Motion, Force-types, characteristics- Principle of transmissibility. ystems of Forces: Classification, Coplanar Concurrent Forces Components of force in pace Resultant- Triangle law of Forces-Polygon law of Forces- Parallelogram Law of Forces-Resolution and composition of Forces Coplanar Non-Concurrent ystem of Forces, Resultant of Parallel system of Forces -Moment of Force and its Application Varignon s theorem, Couples. UNIT II Equilibrium of ystems of Forces:Free Body Diagrams, Types of upports and their reactions, Internal and External Forces - Types of Equilibrium, Equations of Equilibrium, Conditions of Equilibrium, Equilibrium of bodies under Coplanar concurrent system of forces -Lamis Theorem, Converse of the law of Triangle of forces, converse of the law of polygon of forces. Equilibrium of patial ystems for concurrent forces. UNIT III Centroid :Centroids of Lines and Areas (from basic principles ) simple figures Centroid of Composite Figures- Centroid of L, T, I,Z and channel ections. Centre of Gravity:Centre of gravity of simple solids (from basic principles), centre of gravity of composite solids, Pappu s-guldinu s theorems. UNIT IV Area moment of Inertia : Definition Moment of inertia of plane areas, Polar Moment of Inertia, Transfer Theorem, Moments of Inertia of Composite Figures, Moment of Inertia of ections, Products of Inertia, Transfer Formula for Product of Inertia. Mass Moment of Inertia: Moment of Inertia of imple solids, Transfer Formula for Mass Moments of Inertia, mass moment of inertia of composite bodies.
