2 1 Police DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS April 2016 Bicycle Rodeo Program This year s annual Bicycle Rodeo was held in conjunction with the Bike & Helmet Fit Day Event at the Philip Heit Center for Healthy New Albany. The rodeo was held on Saturday, April 16, 2016, and registration for the bicycle riders began at 9 a.m. Once registered, each child s bike was inspected for safety by a representative from Velo-Science Bike Works. After the bikes passed a safety inspection, the children completed five different skill building exercises instructed by New Albany Police Bike Officers. These exercises were designed to teach the children riding skills, bike laws, and safe riding habits. Upon completion of all five exercises each rider received a medal. At the end of the event the children were able to put their new skills by into practice during a bike ride on a New Albany leisure 2016 Bicycle Winners trail. The police department would like to thank the Plain Township Fire Department, Velo-Science Bike Works, and the Citizen Police Academy Alumni for assisting with the event. Twenty-four children participated in the event and all of them were eligible for a drawing for a boy s and a girl s bicycle. This year s winners of the bicycles were Ryan Ruiz and Riona Rodriguez. Temporary Holding Facility In April the police department successfully completed the annual temporary holding facility report and inspections that are required by the State of Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. Dispatcher of the Year Dispatcher Mary Ham was voted Dispatcher of the Year for 2016 by her peers. Congratulations Mary. Her coworkers within the department were asked to identify the dispatcher that demonstrates the best customer service, optimism, and perceptiveness with callers and officers. New Police Clerk The city hired a new Police Clerk, Kylie Pearson. She began her employment with the City of New Albany April 25, Kylie is a graduate of Tiffin University with a Bachelor s degree in Criminal Justice. She will make a great addition to our team. Please join us in welcoming Kylie to the department. Dispatcher Mary Ham
3 2 Police DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS April 2016 Citizen Police Academy Alumni On April 12, 2016, the alumni held their quarterly meeting and discussed topics related to logistics for the Bicycle Rodeo, Founder s Day, and other upcoming events. President Chuck Hassey also reminded the group that his term as president and Edith Weger s term of secretary is ending at the end of the year and he urged members to think about running for office to continue the work of the CPAA organization. Chuck and Edith are completing their second term (four years) in office and are not eligible for a third term. On behalf of the New Albany Police Department, Sergeant Ed Burton presented Chuck and Edith with a plaque thanking them for their service and support for the last four years as members of the alumni and for their service to the community. The alumni will be voting in October to choose new officers to represent them during the term. President Chuck Hassey and Secretary Edith Weger I-Can 5K 10K Event Officers assisted the I-Can 5k 10k run with traffic on April 9th. Despite being very cold, the turn out was good and no issues were reported. The event benefited the Village Coalition Against Hunger.
4 3 Police DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS April 2016 Prescription Drug Take Back Day New Albany police and Plain Township fire teamed up with the DEA to help residents rid their homes of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Only pills and patches were accepted (no liquids or needles). The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. The majority of prescription drug abusers have indicated they obtain their drugs from friends and family. The elimination of prescription medication from easily accessed medicine cabinets and night stands can go a long way in reducing accidents and abuse. Funeral for Officer Steve Smith, Columbus Division of Police On Apri 19 th, 2016 Sgt. Garrett Fernander and Ofc. Jillyan Will attended the funeral of Columbus Police Officer Steve Smith who was sadly killed in the line of duty. The funeral was a powerful reminder of the inherent dangers for law enforcement officers. The family, friends and fellow officers of Officer Smith will continue to be in our thoughts. CPR training Officer Terry Nemeth, a certified CPR instructor, held several CPR classes for city employees. The life saving techniques taught during the classes can be critical for a city employee to know in the event of a coworker or visitor experience a medical emergency. Firearms Training The department s training officers continue to provide and plan advanced training opportunities for In April, all officers completed an eight hour block of firearms training and qualifications. In the months to come officers will be attending additional internal training including use of force, building searches, active threats and stops and approaches. The internal training is in addition to the many classes that officers, dispatchers and staff attend at academies and other outside training resources.
