1 Freedom of Information Request Reference No: I note you seek access to the following information: Regarding crimes involving dating apps Figures for Facebook as well as Tinder and Grindr in each financial year 2013/14, 2014/15, 2015/16. So by financial year and not calendar year, and including Facebook (Only those three: Tinder, Grindr and Facebook) DECISION I have disclosed the located information to you. Please find attached information pursuant to your request above. Please note that you have been provided with all notifiable offences recorded by the MPS between 01 April 2013 and 31 March 2016, where the crime report's summary field contains the keywords 'Tinder', 'Grindr' and 'Facebook'. The manner in which these social media platforms relate to each offence cannot be established without reading each crime report. For example, a crime report's summary field could contain a statement such as: The victim was updating their Facebook account on their mobile phone whilst travelling on the train to work. When the victim had finished updating their Facebook account, they noticed that their bag was missing. The figures provided therefore, only stipulate where the requested keywords are present in a summary field of a crime report. CONTEXT The MPS works hard to bring offenders to justice and together with the online community we advocate using apps safely and encourage the reporting of crime as soon as possible. Your personal safety should always be your priority and you should be mindful when communicating with or meeting new people, online and offline. If you have been a victim of crime through using an online dating app we urge you to report it to police on 101 (or 999 in an emergency). You will be taken seriously and treated with sensitivity. Alternatively you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on or Victim Support on

2 Please consider the following safety tips when using a dating app: - Don't share personal details such as your home address until you can trust the person you are communicating with; - If you decide to meet in person, let someone know where you are going and when you're likely to return; - Always meet in a public place with lots of people around; - Plan your journey to and from the date in advance. If using a mini cab always pre-book; - Drink responsibly and never leave your drink unattended; - Ensure your mobile phone is fully charged and working; - If at any time you feel uncomfortable, leave the date - you are not obliged to stay. For further crime prevention and personal safety advice visit the Metropolitan Police website at I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in the Metropolitan Police Service. 3 Notifiable Offences where the crime summary contains keywords of "Tinder", "Grindr" or "Facebook" recorded by the MPS between 01/04/2013 to 31/03/2016 Protective Marking Suitable for Publication Scheme Ad-Hoc Reference Number FOIA/MOPAC Ref Number Summary Creating Branch / Directorate Date Created Review Date 01/04/2018 Not Protectively Marked Yes 8463 Notifiable Offences where the crime summary contains keywords of "Tinder", "Grindr" or "Facebook" recorded by the MPS between 01/04/2013 to 31/03/2016 MetHQ - Information and Insight 23/05/2017 This report uses LIVE DATA extracted from: CRIS MIS Date Live data was extracted: 19/05/2017 Police forces in the United Kingdom are routinely required to provide crime statistics to government bodies and the recording criteria is set nationally. However, the systems used for recording these figures are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the crime data. It should be noted that for these reasons this force's response to your questions should not be used for comparison purposes with any other response you may receive.

4 Notes Live data was extracted from CRIS MIS & CRIS FBOC on 19/05/2017 covering a recorded date range of 01/04/2013 to 31/04/2016 The data in this report is being presented using the latest Home Office Counting Rule groupings and as such should not be compared to previously published data as some offences may have moved between Home Office groupings. The CRIS searches were initially limited to keyword searching of the CLASS Method field of: %TIND% %GRIND% %FACE%BOOK% and then further filtered for relevance. Please note that in this report alternative relevant spellings found and included were: "Grinder" (with an "er" on the end) "Face book" (a space between both halves of the word) Unless one of the above social media sites were mentioned, others such as angle grinder, coffee grinder, pepper grinder, cannabis grinder, "hit in face with a book" have been excluded. This list is not exhaustive. The CLASS Method field is free text so can be subject to input errors/omissions and local terminology. Police forces in the United Kingdom are routinely required to provide crime statistics to government bodies and the recording criteria is set nationally. However, the systems used for recording these figures are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the crime data. It should be noted that for these reasons this force's response to your questions should not be used for comparison purposes with any other response you may receive.
