Descriptin This 3-unit curse cnsists f three (3) 50-minute lectures each week taught by the head & Objectives: instructr. The lng term bjectives f this curse are t sustain practicing engineers thrugh a career f materials selectin, materials design, materials synthesis, materials recycling, materials prcessing, materials remediatin, and materials replacement. The curse prvides brad cverage f the field fr nn-majrs wh may nt be able t take anther curse in materials science & engineering, and it serves as the intrductry curse in the majr field, laying the fundatin fr understanding the relatinship between the internal structure f matter and the prperties f materials that make them attractive fr engineering applicatins. This curse will apply basic principles f physics and chemistry t the engineering prperties f materials. Special emphasis will be devted t the relatinships between micrstructure and the mechanical prperties f metals, cncrete, plymers, and ceramics, and the electrnic, magnetic, and ptical prperties f materials. Cnnectin t MSE45L: MSE45, is a stand-alne, lecture based curse that supprts an additinal labratry class MSE45L. MSE45L is a labratry-based experience that augments the tpics f the MSE45 lecture class with hands-n practical experiences. Students taking MSE45 are nt required t take MSE45L (althugh it is recmmended), but thse taking MSE45L must have already cmpleted f be taking MSE45 cncurrently. 1
Prpsed Class Outline and Schedule Recall that a curse is a flwing and changing thing. The fllwing is a prpsed utline and timeline fr the semester. All cmpnents are scred, weighted, pled, and then mapped nt a curve fr a curse grade determinatin at the end f the semester. Student learning and grwth will be assessed based n the fllwing assignments: Hmewrk (18% f ttal grade, 2% fr each assignment) There will be 10 prblem sets thrughut the semester, yu may drp ne assignment. The ttal hmewrk grade will be ut f 9 assignments. Hmewrks may be cmpleted in grups f 2 students r yu may chse t wrk independently. N mre than 2 peple may wrk tgether, but each individual student must turn in an individual versin f each hmewrk. Hmewrk pairs must clearly indicate which ther student (if any) they wrked with n the hmewrk. This will be accmplished by prviding the full name (first and last) f yur partner belw yur name at the tp f yur assignment. 4
Similarities and crrelatin f slutins within the hmewrk pair are expected, but verbatim cpying f ne anther slutins is n allwed. If yu wrk ut hw t d the prblem tgether, then write-up yur final slutins separately. Strng crrelatin between the slutins f different pairs hmewrks will lead t additinal scrutiny frm the graders and instructr. Cases f academic dishnesty (i.e., cheating, cpying, etc.) will receive an autmatic zer fr that assignment. Hmewrks are t be turned-in nline via bcurses by the start f class (12:10PM) n each f the nted due dates. Hmewrks must be turned-in in.pdf frmat; submissins must be cnverted t pdf t preserve frmatting, which is cmmn prfessinal engineering practice. N raw wrd-prcessing file frmats will be accepted. It is strngly suggested that hmewrks be cmpleted in a wrkprcessing sftware with an apprpriate equatin-editr add-n as ppsed t scanned versins f hand-written hmewrks. Unreadable r crrupted files cannt be replaced later n we will grade what is upladed by the due date and time. N late hmewrks will be accepted. N late versins t replace missing prblems r unreadable r crrupt files will be accepted. A few wrds n the hmewrks, slutins, and hnesty: The tpmst bjective f yur hmewrk assignments is t guide yur self-learning. Sme f the questins may be available frm varius student rganizatins that maintain databases f previus year s slutins. If yu chse t adpt r mdify the slutins presented in any f the Instructr s Manuals available n line, r an instructr s previusly distributed slutins t any f the prblems assigned this semester, yu MUST give a full citatin f such resurces; therwise yu are engaging in plagiarism. Such academic dishnesty yields NO pints and risks a reprt t the Center fr Student Cnduct. Exams (40% f ttal grade, 20% fr each exam) There will be tw (2) 50 minute, in-class exams, ccurring n Mar. 4, 2019 and Apr. 12, Yu are allwed ne Nte Sheet fr each exam. This Nte Sheet is a single side, 8 ½ x 11 inch piece f paper upn which yu can write any equatins, example prblems, ntes, cnstants, etc. t help yu n the exam. This paper must be turned in with yur exam. Failure t turn in yur nte sheet will result in a lss f pints. There will be n makeup exams. If yu have a valid reasn fr missing an exam (e.g., dctr s excuse, death in the family, schl-spnsred activity, etc.) I will wrk with yu t reach an acceptable time t take the exam. Cases will be dealt with n a case-by-case prcess. Final Examinatin (30% f ttal grade) The final examinatin will be cumulative cvering all tpics frm the entire curse. The exam will take place n May 15, 2019 frm 3:00-6:00P. Yu are allwed ne Nte Sheet fr the final exam. This Nte Sheet fr the final exam can be filled n bth sides. Again, it is a 8 ½ x 11 inch piece f paper upn which yu can write any equatins, example prblems, ntes, cnstants, etc. t help yu n the exam. 5
In-class Participatin - iclicker (12% f ttal grade) We will use iclicker fr between 3-5 questins per class, class vtes, etc. I will recrd iclicker respnses and regular attendance and participatin in class will result in 12% f yur final grade. Yu will be allwed 3 missed classes, n questins asked. Yu will receive yur grade based n the fractin f classes yu attend. Fr instance, assume we have 40 ttal classes. The grade will be taken ut f 37 (accunting fr the 3 allwed missed classes). If yu attended 40/37 classes yu wuld receive a 10.81/10 n this prtin f the grade. If yu attended 25/37 classes, yu wuld receive a 6.76/10 n this prtin f the grade. Fear nt, yu d nt have t get the questins crrect, just participate t the best f yur ability and yu attendance will be cunted. There will be n credit fr participatin unless yu use the iclicker in ther wrds if yu cme t class and frget yur iclicker, yur batteries run-ut, etc. that is ne f yur allwed absences. Late Assignments N late assignments will be accepted unless prir arrangements are made with the instructr fr valid excuses. Valid excuses include, but are nt limited t, deaths in the family, jury duty, hspitalizatin fr illness, etc. Valid prf f absences can and will be requested. Nn-valid excuses include, but are nt limited t, versleeping, my printer didn t wrk, I wasn t here when yu assigned it, etc. If yu have cncerns I am happy t discuss with yu abut yur specific situatin and clarify any questins yu have. Re-grading Plicy Re-grading f exams, reprts, and hmewrks is a timely and serius undertaking. The Instructr takes the academic integrity f this curse and yur wrk very seriusly. In turn, yu will be asked t take a similar stance n these materials. In rder t assure nly valid cases cme befre the class staff, the fllwing plicies will be in place. Failure t adhere t these plicies will mean that yur requests will g unheeded: All re-grading requests must be made within 1 week (7 days) frm the time the assignment grades/slutins are made available t the student. Students are required t type up a written request fr re-grading. This request shuld including the fllwing infrmatin: Student Name and ID Assignment r Exam in questin Prblem number in questin A written descriptin, using cmplete sentences, ut-lining the suspected mis-grading. This includes a detailed descriptin f what yu have dne and why yu think it merits a re-grade. Re-grade request alng with the riginal assignment/exam will first g t the Instructr (this is Prf. Martin fr MSE 45 and yur respective GSI with a cc t Prf. Martin fr MSE 45L) fr cnsideratin. At this pint the Instructr can reject re-grade requests that d nt meet the abve standards. Cmpliant requests will then g t the apprpriate grader r GSI wh will cnsider the request. Simple fixes such as additin errrs will be rectified immediately. Mre extensive requests will g t the apprpriate grader r GSI wh will then cnsult with the Instructr with ne f tw utcmes: 1) a cmplete re-grade f the entire assignment r 2) 6
rejectin f the appeal. Nte that cmplete re-grading may under ther errrs n ther prblems that culd lwer r increase yur grade further. The results f this re-grading will be final and binding. Attempts t dctr r manipulate assignments after grading t enhance scres will be dealt with under the auspices f the Academic Cde f Cnduct. Academic Cde f Cnduct This curse will execute a zer-tlerance plicy cncerning cheating and plagiarism. Students are referred t the University f Califrnia, Berkeley Student Cde fr cmplete details n the Student Cde. Special attentin shuld be given t Sectin V and Appendix II f ( Cheating and plagiarism will be dealt with accrding t established campus plicy. Students caught cheating will receive a failing grade. 7
