It is designed t be taken in parallel with the secnd semester f the general chemistry lecture series (Chem 112A) and prvides labratry experience in, fr example, acid/base chemistry, redx chemistry, slubility, electrchemistry, thermchemistry, and kinetics. These tpics and the assciated experiments in the lab cmplement materials cvered in Chem 112A. Students are expected t attend a lab lecture every week and t perfrm the experiments as scheduled. The experiments include: Exp.1--- ERROR ANALYSIS: Illustrated by an Experiment t Determine the Gas Cnstant Exp.2--- INTRODUCTION TO QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS: Determining the Density f a Slutin and Diffusin rate f Hydrchlric Acid Exp.3---ACID-BASE EQUILIBRIA (I): Determining the Purity f an Unknwn Acid by Acid-Base Titratin Exp.4---ACID-BASE EQUILIBRIA (II): Buffer Slutin and Acid-Base Titratin Curves Exp.5---SOLUBILITY EQUILIBRIA: Determining Slubility Prducts Exp.6---THERMOCHEMISTRY: Enthalpy f Reactin and Enthalpy f Frmatin Exp.7---CHROMATOGRAPHIC SEPARATIONS and Determining Cncentratins by Spectrphtmetry Exp.8---ELECTROCHEMISTRY( I): A Ferricyanide/Ferrcyanide Cncentratin Cell Exp.9---ELECTROCHEMISTRY (II): A Redx Titratin Curve Exp.10---CHEMICAL KINETICS : Determining the Rates f Chemical Reactins Students are als expected t read the tutrial assignments psted n the curse website, which is linked thrugh the chemistry department website, The list f tutrials is: T1--- Gas Law Save Lives: the Chemistry Behind Airbags T2--- Maintaining the Bdy s Chemistry: Dialysis in the Kidneys T3--- Acid Rain T4--- Bld, Sweat, and Buffers: ph Regulatin During Exercise T5--- Phase Changes and Refrigeratin: Thermchemistry f Heat Engine T6--- Nutrients and Slubility T7--- Imprving Air Quality with Electrical Vechicles EXAMS: Bth a mid-term exam and a cumulative final exam will be given and are mandatry. HOMEWORK: Students are required t submit pre-lab assignments and lab reprts ON TIME. Pints will be deducted fr tardiness; 10 pts. fr a late Pre-lab assignment/reprt and 5 pts. fr a set f late lab ntebk pages. LAB BEHAVIOR Prper lab safety prcedures must be fllwed at all times. Student culd be drpped frm the curse fr vilatin f lab safety rules. At the end f the semester, the TA will award 0 t 20 bnus pints t each student accrding t his/her lab behavir, such as punctuality, sense f respnsibility, rganizatin skill, cleanliness, preparedness, and understanding f the experiment. GRADING: Fllws the guidelines in Chem 151 Curse Architecture listed in the Chem 151 Lab Manual
2 Summary f Respnsibilities f Chem 152 Students (Refer t the Chem 152 Lab Manual fr further details) 1. Check and make use f the infrmatin n the curse hmepage ( The Pre-lab Practice and vide demnstratin n the web are usually very helpful in yur lab wrk and ding lab reprts. 2. Attend all lab lectures. Prir t cming t lecture, read the experiment and print ut the lecture slides. 3. Befre cming t lab, cmplete the Pre-lab Assignment in yur lab manual. Be n Time! The Pre-lab Assignment page shuld be submitted t yur TA befre the TA pre-lab presentatin; a late Pre-lab Assignment will be deducted 10 pts. Yu will nt be admitted t the lab if yu are late fr mre than an hur. Yu are nt allwed t stay in the labs past yur lab perids whether r nt yu finish the experiments. 4. Perfrm the experiments independently and in yur fume hd nly. Recrd results in yur lab ntebk. Befre leaving lab, submit a cpy f yur ntebk pages t yur TA and keep a cpy fr yurself. 5. Fllw the prper lab safety prcedures and wear prper attire in all labratries, as is described in the lab manual. If yu wear imprper attire, yu must return hme t change befre yu may begin the experiment. 6. Write reprts and ntebk pages in permanent ink; use a single line t strike ut errrs in writing; d nt use pencils, red pens, r whiteut. 7. Turn in the lab reprts t the red sltted lcker (lcated in the 3 rd flr hallway utside LS330) at times as specified n each lab reprt (either befre the end f the lab perid r befre 5 pm f the next day fr reprts with graph-pltting). The grade fr a late lab reprt will be reduced by 10 pints. 8. Late reprts will NOT be accepted after 5 pm n the Mnday fllwing the week in which it is due, because the Grader s Remarks (which includes answers t the cmmn mistakes made in the lab reprts) are typically psted n the next day (Tuesdays). 9. Plan t perfrm all 10 experiments during this semester; yur 8 highest scres will cunt twards the curse grade. Make-up labs are NOT POSSIBLE. In case f an absence, the missed experiment(s) will be the drpped scre. If yu miss mre than tw labs/reprts, it is likely that yu will fail the curse, regardless f the ttal pints. 10. Bth mid-term exam and final exams are mandatry; absence will be recrded as a zer. 11. In case f a pssible grading errr, yu may ask fr a re-grade. All re-grade requests must be accmpanied by the riginal dcument and a cmplete re-grade requested frm fund in the Appendix f the lab manual, stapled t the first page f the exam/reprt/assignment, clearly indicating the reasn fr the request, and turn in t the re-grade lcker befre the deadline day and time. 12. Plan t check ut yur lab drawers at the end f the semester. Failure t check ut will result in an incmplete grade fr the curse. If yu claimed a lcker in the hallway, yu shuld empty it and leave it unlcked at the end f the semester. Everything left inside the lckers will be trashed after May 15, The Washingtn University plicy n Student Academic Integrity applies at all times in this curse. Vilatin f academic integrity culd lead t an F curse grade regardless f academic perfrmance.
