1 CH 125 Syllabus - Oregn State University Ecampus Chemistry CH 125: General Chemistry Dr. Marita C. Barth This General Chemistry curse is a bridge curse, allwing students wh have taken ne semester f General Chemistry (ften called Gen Chem I) at anther institutin t cmplete their General Chemistry series with OSU. A student that takes CH 125, then CH 123, will earn 7 quarter-credits, which will transfer t a semester schl as 4.7 semester credits including labs, and will be cnsidered the equivalent f Gen Chem II. The prerequisite fr CH 125 is ne f the fllwing: One semester f General Chemistry at anther institutin CH 121 and CH 124 at OSU Students wh need a full year f General Chemistry shuld take CH 121/122/123 instead f this bridge curse. This curse cmbines apprximately 60 hurs f instructin, nline activities, and assignments fr 2 credits. Curse Outline: Chapter 12 Chapter 13 Chapter 14 Slutins Chemical Kinetics Chemical Equilibrium Curse Learning Objectives: The successful student in CH124 will demnstrate mastery f basic chemical cncepts and principles cvered in this curse as measured by perfrmance n exams, quizzes, hmewrk, and labs: a) Slutins Be able t explain hw a slutin frms n the mlecular level Be able t calculate and use the cncentratin units: mlarity, mlality, percent cmpsitin by mass, and ml fractin Be able t define the term clligative prperties, and explain the effect slutes have n slutin prperties b) Kinetics Be able t explain what is meant by rate f reactin, and express the rate f a reactin in terms f the rate f change f any species in the reactin Be t explain and use rate laws, including determining a rate law frm experimental data Be able t use integrated 1 st rder rate equatin t relate the cncentratin f a species t the time f reactin Be able t explain the effects f temperature n reactin rates Be able t explain reactin mechanisms and the effect f catalysts n reactins c) Equilibrium Be able t explain the cncept f dynamic equilibrium Be able t explain LeChatlier s Principle and use it t predict the effects f changes made t a system at equilibrium Be able t crrectly write an equilibrium cnstant, and apply the principles f equilibrium t a variety f quantitative and qualitative prblems. If yu d nt, yu will have t purchase Mastering Chemistry access separately. Hmewrk Lcated at masteringchemistry.cm Due dates are listed bth n the Mastering Chemistry site, and n the grade sheet abve. Hmewrk that is cmpleted late, but befre the start f the final exam windw may be submitted fr up t half-credit T earn full credit (12 pints) fr each Chapter s assignment, yu must get at least 9 f the 12 pints pssible based n Mastering Chemistry s grading system. If yu scre less than 9 pints n a Chapter s assignment, yur grade will be prrated. Online labs Lcated at Labs are an integral part f the curse, and are graded. There are 5 labs (2 intrductry and 3 cre labs) assciated with CH 125. Intrductry labs (1a & 1b) will be graded n cmpleteness. Fr a lab t be cnsidered cmplete, a genuine attempt must have been made at all f the questins. Answers such as I dn t knw r strings f characters are nt sufficient t fr a lab t be cnsidered cmplete. Yu must cmplete labs 1a & 1b even if yu cmpleted them in a previus term. The cre labs will be graded n a cmbinatin f cmpleteness, crrectness in numerical answers, and crrectness in cnceptual answers. If yu dn t understand smething in the lab, it is strngly recmmended that yu cntact the Lab TA r Instructr fr assistance well befre the due date. Late labs will nt be accepted. Be sure that yu have upgraded t the mst recent versin f the brwser sftware yu are using. Practice wrksheets are available and are keyed. A practice final exam will be psted n Canvas. This prvides excellent practice, and we strngly recmmend that yu take the practice exam under test cnditins befre attempting yur exam. Study aids (study guides, wrksheets, vide mdules, and practice exams) are imprtant tls t help yu understand the material in the curse, but will nt be cllected r graded. Quizzes Quizzes are assigned and graded. The Intrductry Quiz is lcated in the Week One Quizzes mdule. The Pre-Quiz is lcated under the Week One Quizzes mdule. Chapter Quizzes are lcated in each chapter s mdule. The Pre-quiz cnsists f twenty-ne questins; credit is awarded based n cmpletin. Since credit n the pre-quiz is based slely n cmpletin, please answer the questins t the best f yur ability withut reading the material in advance r referring t any ther materials. Quizzes fr each chapter cnsist f five questins and are graded based n crrectness. Yu have ne attempt at each quiz, s please be sure that yu re prepared t take each quiz befre yu pen it. Quizzes will becme unavailable after the due date. Please see the grade sheet abve fr due dates. It is strngly recmmended that yu recrd yur calculatins fr the quiz questins, and be sure that yu understand hw t arrive at the crrect answer fr each quiz questin. The final exam must be taken during the assigned exam windw. The final will nly be available n the curse website during this time perid; there are n make-up exams r alternate test times. Materials allwed:! A calculatr (prgrammable calculatrs and cell phne-based calculatrs will nt be allwed)! A printed exam cver sheet (lcated in the Curse Dcuments mdule in Canvas). This includes a peridic table.! Blank scratch paper, pens and/r pencil! One 3 by 5 card with handwritten r typed ntes n bth sides! Any use f materials nt n this list (including accessing f websites r ther nline resurces) will result in a nn-replaceable scre f 0 n the exam, and will be reprted t student cnduct as an incident f academic dishnesty. Grading : Success in this curse ften depends n the amunt f time devted t studying the material. This is a 2-credit curse, and each credit is meant t reflect abut 30 hurs f effrt ver the curse f the term (this wrks ut t ~12 hurs a week in a 5-week term).
