It r equir es students to get into team s of four, tw o fr om either fr eshm an or sophom or e and tw o fr om either junior and senior. CDS Annual M ath Com petition is a per fect oppor tunity for students to dem onstr ate their m athem atical r easonings and apply them to r ealw or ld scenar ios. Not only does this com petition r equir e students? m athem atical abilities, but it also r equir es one of the six Cs of CDS, cooper ation, since planning and r esear ch r evolve ar ound students w or king together as a gr oup. This year, for tyfour students, or eleven team s of four students par ticipated in CDS M ath Com petition and com peted against each other in the pr elim inar y r ound. Com par ed to last year?s CDS M ath Com petition... Do you think ther e should be m or e added to the cur r ent CDS after school activities (EC)? Do you feel like m or e fun ECs m ust be added? Her e ar e tw o br and new clubs called Br oadcasting and M ini W ind Ensem ble! W hen students join the br oadcasting club, they w ould be able to show up on the W hat?s Up Wednesday and announce to CDS about im por tant school events that ar e going to be held for that w eek. They can also talk about any other im por tant issues that they w ould like to m ention. Students m ight be fam iliar w ith this club because sever al M Cs alr eady have show n up on the scr een. If they w ant to be par t of the gr oup but they ar e w or r ied that they ar e too quiet and not gr egar ious, they do not need to w or r y since all they need to do is m ake a com m ent on how other s did and alw ays cheer them up. The Dalton Science Fair is a com petition for students to r esear ch topics of their inter ests and pr esent pr oducts of their endur ing effor ts in poster or pow er point. 2 OCTOBER 2017, VOLUM E IV, ISSUE XVIV 2 School New s M at h Com pet i t i on ther e w er e m uch m or e students par ticipating, putting a sm ile on all CDS m ath faculty m em ber s?faces. Consider ing the fact that only four team s out of eleven advance to the next r ound, it w as ver y com petitive. W hile this show s how challenging it is to advance to next r ound, it also exhibits CDS students?r aw passion and zeal tow ar ds m ath. The r esult for the pr elim inar y r ound cam e out on October 12th. Som e team s m ade it to the next r ound, and som e didn?t. Despite the intense com petition, a senior nam ed Sasha Yu m anaged to advance to the next r ound. W hen asked about his thoughts on going onto the next r ound, he said,?i w as honestly a little bit sur pr ised because my gr oup's plan w as som ew hat contr over sial. How ever, I feel pr etty happy since the effor t of my gr oup w as r ew ar ded.? He added,?i am fair ly devoted to this com petition since I have alm ost never w on fir st place befor e. I hope that I can finally achieve som ething.? Regar dless of r esults, w hat seem s to m atter the m ost is how m uch passion students displayed in m ath thr ough this com petition. Even if one w asn?t able to go onto the next r ound, ther e?s no need for disappointm ent. W ith per sever ance, one?s devotion w ill one day tur n into fr uition. (Heumil Wang, 12) Sci en ce Fai r Q. How do you feel about the Science fair? I feel like it is a per fect oppor tunity to apply scientific concepts or theor ies w e lear ned dur ing the class. It w ill be a per fect chance for those people w ho love to explor e the field of science like m e. I am r eally cur ious about w hich topics other par ticipants ar e going to choose.i w onder w hat other students ar e going to pr esent in the fair. It doesn't m atter though because I am going to w in anyw ay. Q. W hat w as your m otivation for par ticipating in the science fair? I par ticipated ever y year, but I never got any aw ar d unfor tunately because senior s w er e m uch better than in per for m ance. I hope our team do better this year and m ake m eaningful outcom es. Q. Didn?t you just say you ar e going to w in anyw ay? Yeah! (w ith the br ightest sm ile in the w or ld). Q. W hat is your topic for science fair? You don?t have to explain it in detail if you don?t w ant to r eveal your pr oject. Well, I cannot say too m uch about it yet because it w ould be a spoiler. One thing I can say though is that it is r elated to biochem istr y. We w ill analyze an im por tant factor w hich can possibly affect our envir onm ent in a bad w ay. Q. How ar e you going to r esear ch your pr oject? Ar e you going to use Nam u W Iki? We w ill r ead som e books r elated to our topics for sur e. Also, Ther e is never going to be a better place than google; it is a per fect r esour ce for our pr oject if w e avoid r efer r ing to incr edible sour ces. Of cour se, w e ar e definitely not going to use nam u w iki. Q. Is ther e any difficulties in doing your pr oject? Som e people never tr y to com m unicate and contr ibute to our pr oject. You know, you alw ays bum p into unexpected pr oblem s, especially those r elated to team w or ks. Yester day, our team m em ber s w er e supposed to m eet on Skype at 9pm to talk about assigning specific r oles of each m em ber. But 2 of our m em ber s didn?t even r espond pr obably not due to com m unication er r or for sur e. Q. Do you w ant to say anything else? I love M r. Talbot for holding science fair! Oh, don?t get it w r ong though. This isn?t a m essage tow ar d M r. Talbot to get a good evaluation on my pr oject. 3 OCTOBER 2017, VOLUM E IV, ISSUE XVIV 3 Com m unity Fi r st Fi r st Pl ace On Septem ber 16th 2017, CDS pulled off an am azing feat. It w as, of cour se, the day of the Kor ea Business Com petition (KBC), and students fr om a var iety of inter national schools cr ow ded to YISS, r eady to pr esent their business plans. This year, students w er e challenged w ith the pr om pt:in an incr easingly diver se society, cr eate a business that is inclusive to for eigner s in Kor ea.despite having only about a m onth to pr epar e, thr ee gr oups fr om CDS m anaged to conjur e up som e am azing ideas, and this w as undoubtedly one of the best com petitions w e had because one of our team s m anaged to w in fir st place! A big shoutout to: Seongm in Lee, SeoJoo Par k, Chr istine Chun, Yeongseo Par k, Kyungm in Par k, Wookjin Kim, Jongw on Shin, and Junhyuk Kim for their am azing per for m ance! Due to their astonishing accom plishm ent, I?ve decided to inter view one of the w inner s Seongm in Lee to see w hat he has to say about this. Q: W hy did you decide to par ticipate in KBC this year? I par ticipated in tw o of Kor ean Business Com petition last year, and I r eally enjoyed par ticipating in them. I w as able to lear n a lot fr om them and develop as a cr itical thinker. In the fir st com petition, w e lost tw ice in a r ow, and our com petition w as over. In the second one, w e qualified to the finals but cam e 4th by a sm all m ar gin. I w anted to challenge myself once again and have better r esults this year. Q: How do you feel about leading our school to our fir st KBC victor y? Did you think you could w in 1st place fr om the star t? I am ver y pr oud of my team?s achievem ent. We w er e able to pr ove the doubter s w r ong. I did not expect us to w in 1st place. In the fir st r ound, w e per for m ed poor ly and w on by a sm all m ar gin against a w eak team. We clear ly show ed a lack of pr epar ation, and our pr esentation did not go sm oothly. How ever, w e kept pr acticing and suggested changes to each other, and w e w er e m uch better by the tim e w e qualified to the finals. I did not expect us to w in fr om the star t; I w as w or r ied and thought w e w ould get disqualified in the second r ound. How ever, the br acket w or ked out nicely for us, and w e got the chance to go against w eak team s. We w er e ver y lucky. Q: W hat w ould you say to futur e par ticipants? Star t w or king w ell ahead of tim e. We w er e lucky this tim e; even though w e star ted pr epar ing late, w e w er e able to have excellent r esults. How ever, it is m uch easier and better if you star t pr epar ing ear ly. So, do not pr ocr astinate. Again, you have to be dedicated in this event and should be w illing to sacr ifice a lot of your tim e for this event. You need to put a lot of effor t in the pr epar ation pr ocess. M or eover, I w ould tell futur e par ticipants to not be scar ed of other schools like KIS, SIS, and SFS, because they ar e all beatable and not that m uch better than CDS students w hen it com es to KBC. Don?t be discour aged by w hat other s think of CDS and your pr esentation. (M ark Park, 11) We Ru n Ch eon gn a On October 13th 2017, an annual tr adition of Cheongna Dalton School (CDS), We Run Cheongna is taking place. Dur ing this event, all students fr om M iddle and High School ar e r equir ed to r un their designated distance par tly ar ound Cheongna. We Run Cheongna is genuinely pr om oted to build str onger com m unity w ithin the school and develop students as an individual. On this day, m iddle school students star t off w ith r unning 2K and 3K, follow ed by high school gir ls r unning 3K and high school boys r unning 5K. Var iety of events ar e pr epar ed by the Student Council ever y year to m ake students enjoy and par ticipate in the event as m uch as they can. Since the event takes place on the deadly Fr iday the 13th, the them e of We Run Cheongna is?catch M e If You Can!?. Student council m em ber s go ar ound tagging off nam e tags fr om students; this concept w as br ought fr om Kor ean com edy show called?running M an.? The nam e tags ar e going to be cr eated by the students them selves befor e the gam e. The students, socalled the?sur vivor s,? w hose nam e tags ar e still on their back w ould r eceive gr eat advantages. The?sur vivor s? w ould be able to gain the follow ing oppor tunities: fr ee icecr eam, fir st r ide back to the school, and ear lier lunch than other s. How ever, if the r unner s ar e capable of r ipping off the nam e tags of the chaser s (the Student Council m em ber s), the chaser s w ould be petr ified for 10 seconds. This them e w ould be a big suppor t to encour age the students to r un enthusiastically w ith all their effor ts and enjoy the com petition at the sam e tim e. Students have been pr acticing their r unning skills ever y P.E. class; they?ve com peted against one another, done r elays, and consistently tim ed them selves to develop as a r unner.. Despite the fact that r unning m ay not be students?favor ite spor t, a gr eat num ber of them have put in their best effor ts for their per sonal advancem ents. As students have w or ked r eally har d to im pr ove them selves and stay in shape for the com petition this Fr iday, ther e should be fair ly im pr essing r esults. Along w ith the Cr oss Countr y team having their eyes on the tr ophy, it?s a gr eat event for students to cer tainly m ake r ecognition of their r unning skills! Let?s Go Phoenix! 4 OCTOBER 2017, VOLUM E IV, ISSUE XVIV 4 Com m unity CHOEUN + DALTON = DALCHO For four year s, Cheongna Dalton School has been w or king on its collabor ation pr oject w ith Choeun M iddle School. Nam ed DALCHO, Dalton students w or k on differ ent fields of m edia, such as com m unication and w r iting, to help Choeun students to im pr ove their English speaking and w r iting skills. This club w as established fir st in 2013 and cur r ently Diana Seo is taking a lead as the thir d pr esident. For the fir st half of , the club is focusing on cr eating a new s br oadcast. Below is an inter view w ith both Dalton and Choeun students. (Inter view ee: Sueyeon Kim 12th gr ade Dalton student) Q: W hat do you enjoy the m ost fr om DALCHO and w hat is one advantage you can gain by joining DALCHO? A: I actually enjoy talking to m iddle school students, and it is enjoyable to help them out. It is honor able for m e to help them w r ite a new ar ticle, and it is nice to see som e im pr ovem ents. Q: W hat im pr ovem ents do you think can be m ade to DALCHO pr ogr am for the next season? A: Fir st, I think the m ain pr oblem w e have in DALCHO is that even Dalton students do not alw ays use English. I think DALCHO can be im pr oved if language policy becom es m or e str ict. Also, m ake sur e ever yone has finished the w or k by set due date. (Inter view ee: Juyeon M able Jeon3r d gr ade Choeun student) Q: W hat inspir ed you to join DALCHO? A: Fir st of all, I w anted to develop my com m unication and conver sation skills. W hen I gr ow up, I w ant to go out of Kor ea, and w hen I do, I w ant to speak fluently w ith for eigner s and be able to r ead English ar ticles. Q: W hat w ill help you the m ost fr om ever ything that you lear ned in DALCHO? A: We did do a lot of activities such as w r iting ar ticles and film ing new s, so I w ill be able to know about the happenings in for eign countr ies. This w ill be helpful for m e because my dr eam is to becom e a r epor ter. If I go out of Kor ea and becom e a r epor ter or a cor r espondent, this w ill help m e because I have developed my conver sational skills. (Inter view ee: Soom in Kaylee Cho3r d gr ade Choeun student) Q: Do you r ecom m end this activity to younger students at your school and your fr iends? If so, w hy? A: I w ould r ecom m end them to join this club because they can im pr ove their English skills especially w r iting and speaking skills. Ther efor e, I w ould r ecom m end them to join. (Inter view ee: Hoonjung Heo3r d gr ade Choeun student) Q: W hat do you like or dislike about the w ays Dalton students teach and guide Choeun students? A: I like how Dalton students give us oppor tunity to speak in English instead of Kor ean, and it gives m e chances to have conver sation in English w ith them. Q: W hat com m ents do you w ant to give to Dalton students? A: Thank you for teaching us English even though our English is har d to under stand. I hope w e can contact each other for a long tim e. Q: W hat challenges did you face? A: I think I w as able to im pr ove my English w r iting skills w hile doing DALCHO club especially my gr am m ar. I used to w r ite ar ticles ver y poor ;y befor e joining this club; how ever, m any Dalton students have helped m e im pr ove my w r iting skills. (Yebin Seo, 12)

OCTOBER 2017, VOLUM E IV, ISSUE XVIV 5 Life How n ot t o gai n w ei gh t du r i n g Ch u seok Br eak Ah, Chuseok. That tim e of year w hen you?r e bom bar ded by invading questions, fed unhealthy am ounts of food, r eunited w ith fam ily m em ber s you never knew existed, and stuck in a car for w hat seem s like for ever. It seem s odd that one w ould consider all of this tr adition, and look for w ar d to the scale of this event as it takes up an entir e w eek this October. As Chuseok daw ns, an inter esting am ount of w ebsites devote a few ar ticles advising the pr oper w ay to exer cise after eating an inor dinate am ount of food. How ever, in all pr acticality, the only w ay to bur n off the w eight you gained dur ing Chuseok is to not have gained any in the fir st place. It?s not that com plicated to do so, all you have to do is keep in m ind the tw o M?s, m oder ation and m ovem ent Fir st up, m oder ation. W hen you?r e eating, have ever ything in m oder ation, not excessive am ounts of ever ything you can get your hands on. Having too m uch w ill r uin your idealistic vision of the food anyw ay. Keep a m ental list in your head of ever ything you have had to eat, and know w hen to stop. and spending a m em or able am ount of tim e tr aveling. It?s also a tim e to char ge up on ener gy to continue living our daytoday lives. M ake the m ost of this Chuseok, and be sur e not to gain too m uch w eight by thinking of the tw o M?s! Then w e have m ovem ent. Don?t panic! This does not m ean excessive exer cise such as r unning on a tr eadm ill or engaging in pilates, but sim ple things such as getting up and going to the stor e, doing the dishes, or taking a shor t w alk. Keeping your body m oving w ill digest w hat you ate and even bur n off calor ies little by little. (M inju Kim, 10) Chuseok is a tim e of catching up w ith fam ily m em ber s, indulging on delicious delicacies, Ju i ce Cl ean si n g : You r Way t o Heal t h? W hether it?s an Instagr am photo of a fr iend on the beach or a gym snap of your favor ite celebr ity, ever y day w e ar e pr one to im ages of healthy, and consequently happy, people. That being said, it?s undeniably har d to r esist the tem ptation to join in on r ecent health tr ends. The juice cleanse is another one of these cr azes, and the instr uctions ar e quite sim ple: the individual consum es only cold pr essed juice for m s of fr uits and vegetables for a cer tain am ount of tim e. It?s basically just another for m of fasting. And as m ost fad diets tend to be, the juice cleanse is a contr over sial issue am ongst the scientific com m unitym any scientists, dietitians, and doctor s consider it to be a w aste of m oney and a potential har m to the body. The m ain issue w ith juice cleanses and detox diets in gener al is that they?r e unnecessar y, since the body natur ally does this for you.?the liver r egulates the blood?s chem ical levels w hile the kidneys help r em ove w aste fr om the body to be excr eted in the ur ine,? says ACSM exer cise physiologist and r egister ed dietitian Jim W hite. Other issues of the juice cleanse include slow er m etabolism, low ener gy and headaches due to lack of calor ie intake, pr em atur elyaged skin due to lack of fatty acids, and over consum ption of sugar. And m ost im por tantly, itdoes not help you lose w eight. W hile m any people look tow ar d juice cleanses as a m ethod for slim m ing dow n, the tr end actually fails to be of any assistance w ith that issue. If one w er e to see the num ber s dr op w hile on the cleanse, it w ould be the w ater w eight and m uscle m ass decr easing, not the fat. Not to m ention your w eight w ill instantly r etur n to its or iginal num ber w hen you r etur n to your r egular diet. Then w hy do people still go on juice cleanses? The idea is that the cleanses m anage to give our natur ally detoxicating body an oppor tunity to r est.by cutting out solid foods and flooding the body w ith vital nutr ients that the detoxification or gans need to function pr oper ly, w e allow our digestive system s to r est. In sim pler w or ds, the ener gy nor m ally r equir ed to br eak dow n and digest food can be used dir ectly by the or gans to clean up. So if you w er e to decide, even after r eading this (and possibly a few m or e sour ces), that a juice cleanse is still w or th your tim e, m oney, and effor t, then knock your self out. Technically, juice cleanses have their benefits too, r ight? Just m ake sur e it doesn?t liter ally knock you out. (Dahyun Ahn, 11) Al l Abou t Yoga Yoga is the vast collection of spir itual techniques and pr actices. It aim s at integr ating body, m ind and spir it to achieve the state of enlightenm ent or the oneness w ith the univer se. Occasionally, w hat is nor m ally thought of asyogaishatha Yoga, the m ost fr equently pr acticed path. Although the ultim ate goal of yoga is unification and enlightenm ent, the techniques and appr oaches var y. And it is alw ays im por tant to acknow ledge the path that suits you the m ost. Hatha Yoga Good for : Beginner Hatha is a gener al categor y that includes m ost yoga styles. It is the tr aditional system that includes the pr actice of Asanas, yoga postur e and Pr anayam a, br eathing exer cises. These system s, help br ing peace to the m ind and body pr epar ing the body for deeper spir itual pr actices such as m editation. It w ill be r elatively gentle and slow, holding poses longer. It is r ecom m ended to the beginner s or students w ho pr efer a m or e r elaxed style. Vinyasa Good for : Beginner Sim ilar to Hatha, Vinyasa is a gener al ter m that descr ibes m any differ ent styles of yoga. The m ovem ents in Vinyasa ar e synchr onized w ith br eath. How ever, unlike Hatha, the m ovem ents ar e vigor ous based on a r apid flow thr ough the sun salutation. You m ay also see Vinyasa class r efer r ed to as a flow class, w hich r efer s to the continuous flow fr om one postur e to the next. Ashtanga Yoga Good for : Weight loss Ashtanga r equir es lots of vigor ous m ovem ent. If you attend Ashtanga class at a studio you w ill be led nonstop thr ough one or m or e of Ashtanga ser ies, w hile being encour aged to br eathe as you m ove fr om pose to pose. Ther e ar e six ser ies in total, incr easing in difficulty as you m ove fr om the pr im ar y ser ies on. It is typically fast paced and physically challenging. Pow er Yoga Good for : Weight loss Pow er yoga is used to descr ibe a vigor ous, vinyasa style yoga. Som e people w ould descr ibe pow er yoga as w ester nized Ashtanga. It differ s, how ever, in that it is not a set ser ies of poses, but r ather allow s the instr uctor fr eedom to teach w hat they w ant. Because the style can var y, it is r ecom m ended that you consult w ith the studio or individual instr uctor befor e attending a class. (Sueyeon Kim, 12)

OCTOBER 2017, VOLUM E IV, ISSUE XVIV 6 Opinion Ways t o Sh ow W h at Kor ea Tr u l y I s Kim chi, hanbok, hanok all these things have becom e too cliche.they should not be enfor ced upon tour ists as tr ue im ages that r epr esent Kor ea, or its cultur e. How can w e foster a uniqueness to a cultur e? W hat does?kor eanness? r eally m ean? W hat is the tr ue im age of Kor ea, or how can w e find that in any other countr y? These m eaningful questions lead us to significant star ting points on planning Kor ean tour ist industr ies. It should not only hide the sham eful events, but expose them as their only cultur al phenom enon. It is not r eally about explor ing the new, unseen landm ar ks, shopping, or exper iencing the exotic. The expectations of visiting another countr y has changed to exper iencing w hat it feels like to live like a Kor ean, as an actual dw eller ther e. Tr avel is also about visiting the past, not so distant as centur ies befor e, but a r elatively near er past like the par ents?gener ation. To m eet all these expectations, ther e should be a change in the new pr oject for Kor ea?s tour ist industr y: fr om concealing to r evealing em bar r assing facts, fr om the exotic to local, fr om the m oder n to the nostalgic. Fr om Concealing to Revealing Tr avel industr ies should tr y to r eveal and find this?tr ue face? of a countr y. The social pr oblem s in Kor ea include excessive com petition am ong students, their lives gulped up by academ ic institutions after school, pr ivate tutor s, cr eative pr ogr am s. The for eigner s w ill w onder, how does this am bition show itself thr ough the lifestyles of Kor ean students? It is har d to im agine Kor ean tour ist packages to include Daechi dong, a pr ovince of academ ic institutions, over heated com petition for gr ades, gossip betw een jealous m other s. The old and alm ost haunted apar tm ents ar e one of the pr iciest hom es in Seoul, for they ar e closest to pr ivate academ ies. The str eets ar e alw ays cr ow ded w ith M er cedes dr iven by busy m other s. This m ay not be a pr oud scene to adver tise, yet it is tr uly one of the aspects that show the r eal Kor ea. This scene, for its uniqueness and shockingness, is a r ather sur pr ising scene to behold. A cr eative and a m or e tr uer tr avel package does not com e fr om hiding the dar kest par ts and show ing only the beauties of natur e. How ever, it is to show the nation in its tr ue face, tr ue color. Fr om Exotic to Local W hat it feels like to?live? in Kor ea than to?explor e? has becom e the new them e in the tour ist industr y. One of the m ost popular tr avel industr ies tapping on to this them e is?air bnb,? w hich explains their success by focusing on neighbor hood exper iences and the nightlife ar ound the local tow ns. One of the ar ticles that explains the Air bnb gr ow th stor y r eads,?guests w ho use the site typically w ant to exper ience a city in a m or e local, authentic w ay. Tapping into this desir e...the com pany has been placing incr easing em phasis on facilitating this local exper ience? (Br ow n).it is not to live in the hear t of M yeongdong, but in the outskir ts of a bedtow n am ong the apar tm ents, and w ake up in the m or ning am ong the r eal dw eller s. Rather than eating a fancy buffet at the hotel lobby, the m eaning of actually living ther e can be exper ienced thr ough picking out natur al pr oduce in an or ganic super m ar ket dow ntow n. It is to be led by a Kor ean dw eller to the secr et place in a beach w her e the sun com es up, r ather than w atching the city?s view fr om a r ooftop hotel, w hich is done m ostly ever yw her e ar ound the globe. To pr ovide this local exper ience, to satisfy the tour ists?cur iosities, a gover nm ent policy should m ove tow ar ds pr ojects like Air bnb. That m eans pr ojects should focus on offer ing exper iences closer to the living Kor eans her e, r ather than cater to Wester ner s?tastes. Fr om M oder n to Nostalgic The tour ist industr y should m ove fr om a copycat to a pr oject that touches people?s nostalgia. If w hat it does is only copy and adopt only w hat is for eign and new, the cultur e w ould becom e indistinguishable w ith other outside cultur es. The cultur e w ould lose its integr ity. In Kor ea, ther e ar e the?cafe str eets.? The?dabangs? that appear ed dur ing the 1960s w er e secr et m eeting places dur ing political tur m oil, and dur ing the 70s, is has changed to a place for dating couples and college students. One ar ticle claim s that these dabangs w er e?an outlet for their fr eedom of expr ession; they w ould gather to talk and listen to live DJs per for m? (Pipunic). These?dabangs? w hich w er e nostalgic, living sites that contained a significant por tion of Kor ean histor y ar e m ostly for gotten or destr oyed. They ar e r eplaced by other popular and flour ishing cafestr eet distr icts in Hongdae, Hannam, or Chungdam, w hich ar e cafes new ly built and decor ated by Kor ean designer s w ho alw ays have to lear n their techniques fr om M ilan, Par is, or New Yor k. Of cour se, their ar t is nothing to cr iticize. How ever, ther e should be a necessar y balance betw een the new and the tr aditionally im por tant, w hich m ay be the living em blem s of the 60s and 70s w hich ar e w hat m aybe the for eigner s cam e to see. Even Kor eans w ill not go to London to see Star bucks, but r ather the tr aditional coffeehouses that ar e exclusive to that place. Tr y to im agine a Seoul tour bus dr iving ar ound the str eets of Daechi dong, Am er icans w ith their binocular s star ing at sw eating teenager s w ith their heavy backpacks. Renting an apar tm ent in the outskir ts of Seoul and visiting the local super m ar ket gives a glim pse to how Kor eans r eally live. Instead of new ly designed cafes by pr oud Kor ean ar tists r etur ned fr om M ilan,?dabangs? ar e the living venues that hold por tions of Kor ean histor y. It is thr ough all these that the tour ism pr oject should seek to give to for eigner s. (Jasmine Kwon, 10)

OCTOBER 2017, VOLUM E IV, ISSUE XVIV 7 Featur es Ch u seok : Over a M illen n iu m of Kor ean Tr adit ion s Along w ith Lunar New Year, Chuseok, or Hangaw i, is one of the oldest and m ost im por tant holidays for Kor ean fam ilies. This year, w e w ill take a look at the histor y and tr aditions of Chuseok to see w hat m akes it such an enjoyable tim e. W hile cur r ently know n m or e as a per iod of fam ily r eunion, Chuseok, dubbed the?kor ean Thanksgiving? by m any, w as or iginally founded as a festival to celebr ate the tim e of year ly har vest. How ever, ther e ar e m any other str ay stor ies r elating to its or igin, w ith r oots r eaching as far back as the Silla Dynasty. Of cour se, Chuseok also has an im por tant connection to the full m oon, w hich the skin of its iconic dish, Songpyeon, r ice cake stuffed w ith r ed bean paste and other fillings such as honey, is m eant to r esem ble. M any tr aditional activities ar e also based on the full m oon, such as Ganggangsullae, w her e par ticipants gr ab each other s?hands and dance ar ound in cir cles under the m oonlight. Other activities done in Chuseok include hw atu, or thr ow ing ar r ow s into a basket, tugofw ar, and chicken fighting (as bizar r e and inhum ane as it sounds, this activity is actually just aim ing to knocking each other dow n w hile staying on one leg). Still, apar t fr om its or igin, fam ily connection is a lar ge par t of Chuseok. Indeed, paying r espect to ancestor s and m eeting w ith r elatives ar e still r elevant to m oder n Chuseok. Even in Nor th Kor ea, w her e the high cost of public tr anspor tation inhibits such visits, citizens str ive to find w ays to give their r espects to ancestr al spir its. To m any young people, Chuseok m ay appear as just another m eaningless Th e SATs As any concer ned student can tell you, one of his or her biggest w or r ies is getting into a good college, and for m any, scor ing high on the SAT is one of the fir st steps. Ever y year, hundr eds of thousands of students all ar ound the globe flock to their local testing center s to pr ove their intellect to their colleges of choice. In fact, CDS becam e one such center in October. But w hat is the SAT, and how does it w or k? In shor t, the SAT is a m ultiplechoice and fr eer esponse based test evaluating a student?s skills in r eading and w r iting English, as w ell as their ability in m athem atics w ith and w ithout a calculator. Ther e ar e four sections total, w ith 400 m axim um points available for each, culm inating to a possible per fect scor e of 1600 a scor e that only ar ound 400 students achieve each year. For those w ho w ant to take that extr a step, an optional essay scor ed out of 12 points is also available, along w ith 20 SAT subject tests, specialized tests designed for specific subjects r anging fr om Physics to Chinese. If your scor es falter at fir st, don?t w or r y: the SAT can be taken m ultiple tim es, and is available m ultiple tim es each year. W ith m any colleges consider ing a high SAT scor e as the 2nd m ost im por tant factor in enr olling students, a high scor e is sur e to boost your chance of getting into a good college. W ith these im plications, the SAT w ill likely be a sour ce of m uch str ess; how ever, know that you ar e not alone. W hile taking the SAT m ay seem like a daunting task, r elax your self and consider it an oppor tunity, a stepladder tow ar ds a br ighter futur e. (Woojin Chang, 11) br eak fr om school to m eet w ith r elatives and study for the SATs. But Chuseok is cer tainly m uch m or e as a holiday for us to appr eciate our lives, fam ilies, and other things w e value. (Daniel Lee, 11)

OCTOBER 2017, VOLUM E IV, ISSUE XVIV 8 Cultur e Dr am a Review : Save M e A popular w ebtoon w as tur ned into a dr am a called?save M e? w hich is??? in Kor ean. The dr am a has thr ee actor s w ho ar e ver y popular am ong teenager s. They ar e Ok Taek Yeon, Seo Ye Ji, and Woo Do Hw an. The dr am a is center ed ar ound a false r eligion in a sm all tow n w hich br ainw ashes people fr om all over the tow n. The stor y star ts as Seo Ye Ji, a fr iend of both Ok Taek Yeon and Woo Do Hw an, gets captur ed by the pr iest of the r eligion and is thr eatened to live under the house pr ovided by the r eligion. The stor y pr oceeds by show ing differ ent stor ies fr om each char acter. If I have to pick one w or d to descr ibe the dr am a, I w ould pick r ealistic. As Kor ea is pr evalent w ith differ ent r eligions w ith m any am ong them being false, the dr am a did a ver y good job illustr ating how those r eligions ar e able to lur e people?s m ind into believing their god. Not only the dr am a is r ealistic on the r eligious aspect but is also on how author ity and social status w or k in Kor ea. Ok Taek Yeon?s father is the tow n official w ho w ants m or e pow er than w hat he has. By show ing how his father is tr ying to get m or e pow er and go up the social ladder, the dr am a displays how cor r upted politics is in Kor ea. Woo Do Hw an contr ibutes to the stor y by m anifesting how w eak a poor per son is in Kor ea. The dr am a does not have any scar y ghosts to m ake the audience scar ed; how ever, by show ing the ver y r ealistic side of the Kor ean society, the audience can easily develop fear by w atching the dr am a. I suggest ever yone to w atch this dr am a for m any differ ent r easons. Num ber one being the fact that Woo Do Hw an is ver y handsom e, and num ber tw o for getting to know how Kor ean society r uns. (Anny Du, 12) M ovie Review : M em oir of a M u r der er M emoir of a M urderer is a m ovie based on a bestselling fiction book by author Kim Youngha. I thought it w as a ver y clim actic and suspenseful m ovie that highly entices the audience. It is a Dr am a/thr iller m ovie about a ser ial killer w ith an Alzheim er 's disease, w ho m ust pr otect his daughter fr om another psychotic ser ial killer w ho is his daughter?s boyfr iend. This m ovie honestly star s am azing actor s, I w as com pletely astounded by their acting skills. To star t off, Sol Kyunggu as the m ain lead w ho plays the r ole of a ser ial killer w ith an Alzheim er?s disease gives a legendar y per for m ance in this film. Actor Kim Nam gil gives just as gr eat of a per for m ance as a psychotic ser ial killer, leaving the audience in suspense the w hole tim e. I w as actually r eally sur pr ised w ith Seolhyun w ho featur es as the daughter of Sol Kyunggu since she w as quite good w ith her per for m ance as w ell. I had a pr econceived idea that her acting skills w ouldn?t be as good since she?s not r eally par t of the acting car eer. How ever, she indeed exceeded my expectations w ith her per for m ance skills. W hat I love m ost aboutm em oir of a M ur der er is the fact that this m ovie keeps us in suspense the w hole tim e. Especially at the beginning, the m ovie is focused on Sol Kyunggu?s per spective but as the stor yline pr ogr esses, w e end up finding out the distor ted tr uth. You?ll basically be on the edge of your seat w aiting to see w hat?s going to happen next so if you love a little suspense, I highly r ecom m end this m ovie. This m ovie obviously has a few flaw s to point out as w ell.m em oir of a M ur der er is a ver y confusing m ovie since the scenes r apidly change fr om the past and back to the pr esent. Other than that though, I give this m ovie a 4 out of 5 star s. (Yoonjin Choi, 12)
