We consder a smple model n whch fermon felds wth mult-flavors are coupled to a scalar feld through Yukawa couplng, and examne how the number of the fermon flavors affects the stablty of the Ferm ball aganst the fragmentaton. ()We fnd that the Ferm ball s stable aganst the fragmentaton n most cases even n the lowest order thn-wall approxmaton. ()We then fnd that n the other specfc cases, the stablty s margnal n the lowest order thn-wall approxmaton, and the nextto-leadng order correcton determnes the stable regon of the couplng constants; We examne the smplest case where the total fermon number N and the Yukawa couplng constant G of each flavor are common to the flavor, and fnd that the Ferm ball s stable n the lmted regon of the parameters and has the broader regon for the larger number of the flavors. 2 I. INTRODUCTION A Ferm ball [, ], a knd of non-topologcal solton [], s composed of three parts: a false vacuum doman, a doman wall envelopng the doman, and zero-mode fermons [4] confned n the doman wall. The Ferm ball s stablzed owng to the dynamcal balance of the shrnkng force due to the surface energy and the volume energy, and the expandng force due to the Ferm energy. The Ferm ball s thought to be a canddate for one knd of cold dark matter n the present unverse [5]. Macpherson and Campbell ponted out that such stablty holds good only for the sphercal shape of the Ferm ball []. They further showed that the Ferm ball s not stable aganst the deformaton of the sphercal shape, and thus flattens and fragments nto tny Ferm balls. The destablzaton s caused by the volume energy of the Ferm ball. We, however, ponted out that the perturbatve correcton due to the doman wall curvature can stablze the Ferm ball when the volume energy s small enough compared to the curvature effect [6, 7]. In case of a smple model wth a sngle fermon flavor, we found that only n the qute narrow regon of the parameters does the Ferm ball become stable. The purpose of the present paper s to examne how the fermon content of the model affects the stablty of the Ferm ball. As an example, we consder an extended model n whch fermons wth mult-flavors are coupled to a scalar feld through Yukawa couplng. Snce the Paul s excluson prncple does not apply to the dfferent flavors of the fermons, the stable regon of the parameters s expected to broaden. II. STABILITY OF FERMI BALL We consder the followng Lagrangan densty, L = n ( µφ) + Ψ (γ µ µ G φ)ψ U(φ), () = where the scalar potental U(φ) s gven by U(φ) = λ 8 (φ v ) + (φ). () If the quantty (v) ( v) s zero, the Lagrangan densty s nvarant under the Z transformaton, φ φ. There s, however, a small but a fnte quantty (v) ( v) Λ λv 4, where the nvarance s not a strct one.
We consder a sphercal Ferm ball wth the radus R, and assume that the wave functon Ψ and the boson φ are statc and that φ depends only on the radal coordnate r. Let Ψ be the egenfuncton of the total angular momentum squared J, the z component J z and the party P wth the egenvalues of J(J +), M and ( ) J ω/ (ω = ±), respectvely. Then, Ψ s wrtten as Ψ ( x) = r f(r)ym lj (θ,ϕ) g(r)yl M J (θ,ϕ), () where Y M lj and Y M l J = ( σ x/r)y M lj are the sphercal spnors havng the egenvalues J and M, wth J = l + ω/ = l ω/. Substtutng Eq.() nto the Lagrangan L = d x L, we obtan L[φ,ψ ] = dr 4πr ( ) dφ +U(φ) dr + ψ H f ψ, (4) where d H f = σ dr +σ K r +σ G φ, (5) wth K = ω(j + ) and ψ (r) = ( ) f(r) g(r). Snce the Ferm ball s a ground state wth a fxed number of fermons, N = d x Ψ Ψ, (6) we obtan the wave functon ψ and the scalar feld φ by extremzng L ǫ [φ,ψ ] = L[φ,ψ ]+ ( ǫ dr ψ ψ N ), (7) wth the Lagrange multplers ǫ. The energy of the Ferm ball s expressed n terms of the felds as E = dr 4πr ( dφ dr ) +U(φ) + ǫ (8) whereǫ sequaltothefermenergyǫ = dr ψ H f ψ andψ snormalzedas dr ψ ψ =. In order to estmate the energy of the Ferm ball, we take the thn-wall approxmaton and obtan the correcton due to the fnte curvature radus R by the perturbaton wth respect to /R. We expand φ, ψ, and H f n the power of /R, φ = φ +φ + ψ = ψ +ψ + H f = H +H +H +, (9)
where d dr +σ Kw H = σ R +σ G φ H = σ H = σ Kw K R +σ G φ R, () wth w = r R. From δl ǫ /δφ = δl ǫ /δψ =, we obtan the equatons of moton, and H ψ = ǫ ψ () d φ dw = U + G ψ φ φ=φ 4πR σ ψ, () (H ǫ )ψ = (H ǫ )ψ () d dw U φ φ = Rdφ dw + G ψ πr σ ψ. (4) φ=φ Neglectng (φ) n the scalar potental U(φ) for smplcty, we have analytc solutons for φ and ψ, φ (w) = vtanh w (5) ψ (w) = N cosh γ w χ +, (6) where = λ v s the thckness of the doman wall, γ = λ G s the constant[8], N = dw cosh γ w/ s the normalzaton factor, and χ ± s the egenspnor of σ wth the egenvalue ±. We note that the second term of the r.h.s. of Eq.() vanshes. The leadng order of the egenvalue s gven by ǫ = K R, (7) where we take K postve (ω = +). We have solutons for φ and ψ, φ (w) = w dw cosh 4w w cosh w ψ (w) = { } c + (w)χ + +c (w)χ N dw h(w ) cosh w (8), (9) 4
where and v h(w) = Rcosh + w πr 4 KG N w dw w cosh γ w, () c + (w) = { K w cosh γ w dw cosh γ w R } w G dw φ (w ) c (w) = K R coshγ w w w dw w cosh γ w dw w cosh γ w. () Substtutng the solutons nto Eq.(8), we obtan the energy of the Ferm ball, where E s the leadng order contrbuton to the energy, E = E +δe, () E = 8πλ v R + N R and δe s the energy correcton of the order of E ( /R),, () δe = N R +πλv4 dw πλ v R dw cosh 4 w w cosh 4 w w dw cosh 4w w dw h(w ) cosh w + R 4 5R 5 + R N N N 5 N G N dw dw N w w cosh γ w dw w cosh γ w w w dw w cosh γ w w cosh γ w dw cosh 4 w In the above equatons, we use the relatons, dw cosh γ w w w dw cosh w dw h(w ) cosh w. (4) N = = K max J K= M= J = K max (K) = K max (K max +), (5) K= 5
ǫ = K = R R K max(k max +)(K max + ) N R + N (N ). (6) R ()Stablty n the leadng order approxmaton Let us examne the stablty of the Ferm ball wthn the leadng order approxmaton n the /R-expanson. From E / R =, we get the mnmzng radus, and the energy at the radus, R mn = ( N π λ 6v ), (7) we note E / R > at R = R mn. ( E = π λ 6 N ) v. (8) In order to examne the stablty aganst the fragmentaton, we compare two states; a state A n whch a sngle Ferm ball has the fermon number N for -th flavor, and a state B n whch m Ferm balls have the fermon number N (a) each and conserve the total fermon number as m a= N (a) = N for each flavor. States A and B have the energy E A = E (N ) and E B = ae (N (a) ), respectvely. To compare the energy of the two states, we use Mnkowsk s nequalty, ( (N () +N () ) ) ( (N () ) ) ( ) + (N () ), (9) where the equalty s vald only for N () = cn () (c ) wth c beng common for all. Usng the relaton repeatedly, we have ( (N ) ) a ( (N (a) ) ), () where the r.h.s. s equal to the l.h.s. only for N (a) = c (a) N (c (a) and m a= c (a) = ). Ths leads us to the fact that except for the specal case of N (a) = c (a) N, state A has lower energy than that of state B, and thus the Ferm ball s stable aganst the fragmentaton n the leadng order approxmaton. Ths stuaton that the Ferm ball s stable n most cases s characterstc of the case wth mult-flavor of fermons, and qualtatvely dfferent from the case of a sngle flavor [7]. In case of N (a) 6 = c (a) N, the two states have the same energy
n the leadng order approxmaton, and the correcton term δe determnes the stablty of the Ferm ball aganst the fragmentaton. ()Stablty n the next-to-leadng order approxmaton n the specal case N (a) = c (a) N We examne the stablty of the Ferm ball aganst the fragmentaton n the case of N (a) = c (a) N. Substtutng R = R mn nto Eq.(4) yelds δe = C(λ,G,N )v, () where Here, I to I 5 are gven by C(λ,G,N ) = π λ 6( N ) I = I = I () = I 4 () = I 5 () = 6( N ) 48π 5 ( N 5 N I 4 ()) 5λ 7 6( N ) 5 x dx cosh 4 x dx cosh 4 x x x dx cosh γ x x dx cosh γ x x dx cosh γ x + 8π(I I ) λ dx cosh 4 x x x x + 64π( N N I ()) λ ( N ) + 8π( G N N I 5 ()) λ( N ) dx h(x ) cosh x dx cosh γ x dx x x cosh γ x dx x cosh dx cosh 4 x x x. () dx h(x ) cosh x, () wth h(w) rescaled as h(x) = R v h(x) and N as N = N. We compare state A of the sngle Ferm ball and state B of m Ferm balls wth the total fermon number to be conserved for each flavor. States A and B have the energy E A = E (N ) + C(λ,G,N )v and E B = ae (N (a) )+ ac(λ,g,n (a) )v, respectvely. In case of N (a) = c (a) N, we derve ae (N (a) ) = E (N )fromeq.(8) andc(λ,g,n (a) ) = C(λ,G,N )fromeq.(), andthus fnd that state B has the energy E B = E (N ) + mc(λ,g,n )v. Therefore, f C(λ,G,N ) s postve, state A has lower energy than that of the state B by the magntude of the correcton term δe, and the Ferm ball s stable aganst fragmentaton even n the specal case of N (a) = c (a) N. 7
Let us consder the smplfed model to examne how the number of the fermon flavors n affects the stablty of the Ferm ball n case of N (a) = c (a) N. We assume that Ψ belongs to a multplet of the nternal symmetry wth a common Yukawa couplng constant G and also assume that the fermon number s common to the flavor,.e., N = N. Under these assumptons, the coeffcent C s ndependent of N and dependent on λ, G and n from Eq.(). We evaluate Eq.() usng a numercal ntegraton, and obtan the stable regon of theparameterswherec spostve(seefguresand). We assume that the fermon Ψ ( n) belongs to a multplet and the boson φ to a snglet of the nternal symmetry, and that the fermon number N s common to the flavor as N = N. The assumptons are the same as those n Fgure. We see that the allowed regons broaden as n ncreases. III. CONCLUSION We have consdered a model for the Ferm ball n whch the fermons wth mult-flavors Ψ ( n) are coupled to the scalar feld φ and the total fermon number of each -th flavor s fxed as N. We have examned the regon of the parameters for the Ferm ball to be stable aganst fragmentaton, and how the number of the fermon flavors n affects the stablty. We have consdered the thn-wall Ferm ball,.e., the radus R s much larger than the wall thckness. Wehavetakennto account theeffect duetothefntewall thckness bythe perturbaton expanson wth respect to /R. In the leadng order thn-wall approxmaton, we have compared the energy of the ntal state of a sngle Ferm ball and that of the fnal state of fragmented m Ferm balls, wth the total fermon number N of each flavor 9
beng conserved, m a= N (a) = N. We have found that the former s smaller than the latter and thus the Ferm ball s stable aganst fragmentaton, except for the specal case of N (a) = c (a) N wth m a= c (a) =. Ths stuaton that the Ferm ball s stable n most cases s characterstc of the case wth mult-flavor of fermons, and qualtatvely dfferent from the case of a sngle flavor. In the specal case of N (a) = c (a) N, the two states have the same energy n the leadng order approxmaton and the next-to-leadng order correcton term δe determnes the stablty. There we have found that the energy of the ntal state s E +Cv and that of the fragmented states s E +mcv, where v s a symmetry breakng scale and C s a coeffcent dependent on the scalar self-couplng constant λ, the Yukawa couplng constant G and the fermon number N. Ths tells us that even n that case the Ferm ball s stable when C takes a postve value n the parameter regon of λ, G and N. We have consdered the smplfed model n whch a multplet of fermons has a common G and a common N for each flavor. We have found that the allowed regon of the parameters for the Ferm ball to be stable exsts and broadens as the multplet dmenson n ncreases. [] A. L. Macpherson and B. A. Campbell, Phys. Lett.
