3 31-2 KA Bridge No (044) K-31 over N F Little Osage Drainage 2.09 Miles East of US-59 East Junction Anderson County
4 INTRODUCTION In southeastern Anderson County, K-31 crosses the North Fork Little Osage Drainage approximately 2.09 miles east of the US-59 East Junction. The current corrugated pipe drainage structures are proposed to be replaced with a 3 12 x 10 x 146 Rigid Frame Box (RFB). This report pertains to the geology of the project and represents the best available information to the Kansas Department of Transportation. MANTLE GEOLOGIC FOUNDATION MATERIAL The Mantle found on this project consists of all unconsolidated material above bedrock including native soils and roadway fill. The native soils consist of dark brown silty clay and clay with minor amounts of gravel. Total thickness of the native soils varies from to 6.2 feet. The roadway fill consists of dark brown silty clay with minor gravel. This material becomes more clayey with sporadic limestone cobbles with depth. At the base of the fill material there is up to 1.0 foot of heavy limestone cobbles and boulders near the existing drainage structures. Total thickness of the fill material is up to 14.1 feet near the proposed RFB. BEDROCK Linn Subgroup Chanute Formation The Chanute Formation underlies the Mantle at the prosed bridge location. This shale may be slightly weathered up to 3.8 feet below the Mantle/bedrock contact; but at many locations non-weathered shale is found immediately below this contact. The upper portion of the Chanute Formation is dark gray sandy and limey shale which can contain hard noncontinuous limey stringers. At an approximate elevation of 996.0, this formation becomes dark gray shale. Total thickness of the Chanute is greater than 2 feet. The RFB will be founded in the upper limey, sandy, shale of the Chanute Formation. FOUNDATION RECOMMENDATIONS The following table gives the Mantle/bedrock contact elevations across the centerline of the proposed RFB. The Chanute Formation will be the founding material. Br. 5 HYDROLOGY Two (2) groundwater measurements were recorded 24-hours after completion of the power auger soundings located near the stream. The North Fork Little Osage Drainage water elevation at the proposed RFB location was The recorded water levels in the completed soundings were and correlating closely to the stream water level. It is anticipated that dewatering equipment will be necessary for construction of the proposed structure. INVESTIGATIVE PROCEDURES A total of seven power auger soundings closest to the proposed RFB were used to draw the geology across the centerline of the structure. The drill logs are attached to this report. Locations and elevations of the drill holes were determined by measuring and leveling off of project benchmarks. The level runs are attached with this report. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Recognition is given to Jim Burns (E.T. Specialist) and Sean Hudson (E.T. Senior) for acquiring the field data. We would also like to thank the landowners for giving us access to their property in order to obtain the needed field information.
