1 Newsletter number 5 5 December 2008 Bergskraft Bergslagen at Euro Mine Expo Bergskraft Bergslagen was very well represented at the opening of Euro Mine Expo, held in Skellefteå, Sweden, October. Six of us, in various roles, took part at the first conference and trade fair for the mining industry in Skellefteå - Euro Mine Expo. There were about 100 exhibitors and over 500 visitors who met, did business and discussed issues associated with international mining. One of the speakers was Maud Olofsson, Sweden's Minister for Enterprise and Energy. Our impression at Bergskraft Bergslagen was that it was a very well organised and exciting event. 2 SveMin conference on the environment At the Swedish Association of Mines, Minerals and Metal Producers' (SveMin) annual conference on the environment (Örebro and Zinkgruvan, October), several people from Bergskraft Bergslagen were given the opportunity to give short presentations on the subject "Mining in Bergslagen from the past into the future". The focus was on the research project currently in progress on the Kopparberg test field. All the presentations are available on the Bergskraft Bergslagen website, The Swedish Association of Mines, Mineral and Metal Producers - SveMin - is the trade and employers' organisation for mines, mineral and metal producers. The Employers' Association of Swedish Mine Owners, GAF, is the employers' organisation within SveMin. ENMR and Bergskraft Bergslagen Ljusnarsberg Municipality and Bergskraft Bergslagen administer ENMR's (European Network of Mining Regions) website. Follow the link to ENMR from Bergskraft's website and you will find numerous reports, presentations and studies concerning Europe's various mining regions, their history and socioeconomic data, and the ENMR's final document. Situation at the test field The test field in central Kopparberg, which is part of the Bergskraft Bergslagen project, is to be extended and expanded. More containers with equipment, greater space for research trials and personnel areas, etc., are needed. When work is complete, it will be Europe's largest and most advanced test field for research on historic mine waste and mining-related environmental work. Phone +46 (0) for further information or to book time. The digital archive Our urgent work of scanning historical documents associated with the mining industry and mining continues unabated. Currently, just over pages have been scanned and processed. The objective for the whole project period (1 October 2007 to 30 September 2010) is , which will be more than met.

3 Meeting places Various events are planned. After the new year, Bergskraft Bergslagen will be organising a "Mining-district industry conference". The conference is for representatives of the business sector, local authority managers and politicians at local and regional levels in Bergslagen. In various guises, Bergskraft Bergslagen will also be attending the Hindersmässan fair in Örebro, January 2009, when the mining association "Bergshanteringens Vänner" (Friends of the mining industry) and others will gather. You are invited to take part in Bergskraft's Environment and Mineral Days, a threeday (12-14 May) travelling seminar that calls in at exciting geological environments and development projects. In accordance with the well-known Bergskraft model, we will be discussing geology and the environment, and setting the location in a wider context that illuminates geology, the past and the future. Invitations are on their way! We are also planning many other meetings, so we can already say that 2009 will be an exciting year! Women's network The women's network meets on 15 December. There will be a presentation, and work on plans for the future. We meet in Örebro, and a separate invitation will be sent out. Bergskraft Bergslagen, employer Bergskraft Bergslagen is growing, and more and more people are becoming involved with the project. In addition to project management, administration and research, about 15 people work in one way or another with the project, drill cores, documents or our website. The project is clearly an important employer in Bergslagen. Website The Swedish version of our website has been available on the internet for some months now: We have now started work on translating the entire site into English, and updating and integrating it with previous versions of the website.
