Elephant Rocks State Park (Missouri) Virtual Trip Objectives 1. Explain how the observed shapes, textures, and patterns of rock indicate the age of the earth and the large scale of geologic time. 2. Describe the composition of igneous rocks, how they form, and why they look the way they do. 3. Compare and contrast the different types of weathering and distinguish between weathering and erosion. Background About the Field Site Read the Missouri Department of Natural Resource Elephant Rocks document (named Elephant_Rocks.PDF available from the Blackboard). Answer the following questions. Question A: What type of rock is the Elephant Rocks made of and how does this type of rock form? Question B: What is the age of the rocks? Question C: What are the major minerals in the Elephant Rocks? Question D: What give the rocks a pink-red color? Question E: What external forces have made the rocks a rounded shape?
Virtual Field Trip Step 1. Visit the web site: Step 2. Select Elephant Rocks State Park from the dropdown list and click Search button Step 3. Choose the Satellite option in the upper left corner to see a general overview of the park. Full Screen mode (upper right corner) will give you the best viewing. Step 4. Let s explore the park. Zoom further into the satellite image ( + in lower right corner) until you can see the bare rocks filling most of the screen. Question F. What observations can you make about the rock from this aerial bird s eye view? Question G. What is the geologic term for the linear cuts into the rocks? Question H: What clues from the image can you use to get a sense of the size of the large, rounded rocks? Step 5. Find the google balloon (Zoom out if necessary) and click on the balloon. An information window will pop up. Step 6. Play the video (2 minutes 51 seconds in length). (Note: you can also play the same video in YouTube) Step 7. In the information pop-up window, click on Fly Over hyperlink to watch another short video about the park from above. Step 8. In the information pop-up window, click on Link to the park s web site hyperlink, which will lead you to the Elephant Rocks State Park s official web site, where you can read the nature history of the park, look at the photo gallery and watch a virtual tour of the park. Use of Google Earth Pro Step 1. Download the Elephant Rocks State Park.kmz file from the Blackboard. Step 2. Double click on the kmz file to launch the Google Earth Pro (assuming you have the Google Earth Pro installed on the computer you re using; Google Earth Pro is also available from the Blackboard with the passcode of GEPFREE).
Step 3. Double click on any of the yellow pins labeled Elephant Rocks State Park in the left top window in Google Earth Pro under My Places. This will zoom you in to the general area of Elephant Rocks, and when you zoom in even closer you will see six 360 panoramas indicated with a. First, explore the park by clicking on each of the panoramas. Look carefully for signs that weathering and erosion has taken place. Then answer the questions for Points A,B,C on the next pages.
Elephant Rocks State Park Point A: N, W Click on the icon on the Google Earth s image at Point A and then follow the instruction to see the spherical panorama of the surroundings: top view, water pools/engraving Question G: What kinds of weathering and erosion cause the formation of the water pools? You can also download a high resolution image of water pools from Blackboard (Water_Pools.jpg). Water_pools.jpg (photo credit: Dr. Shunfu Hu) Elephant Rocks State Park Point B: N, W Click on the icon on the Google Earth s image and then follow the instruction to see the spherical panorama of the surroundings: sunrise Question H. What kinds of weathering and erosion cause the formation of the rounded boulders? You can also download a high resolution image of rounded boulders from Blackboard (Rounded_Rocks.jpg).
Rounded_Rocks.jpg (photo credit: Dr. Shunfu Hu) Elephant Rocks State Park Point C: N, W Question I. This photo shows an old quarry site due to the excavation of granite rocks. What are the potential uses of the granite rocks? You can also download a high resolution image from Blackboard (OLD_Quarry.jpg). OLD_Quarry.jpg (photo credit: Dr. Shunfu Hu)
