Page1 Name: Section: Final Grade: /150 GRADING: INCLUDE THIS COVER PAGE WITH ALL YOUR ASSIGNMENT SUBMITTALS! Draft Document -To be turned in by the draft deadline-: It should include your completed narrative and your figure placement. You will be graded on your narrative, but will also receive ungraded feedback on your figures. Name: Section: Draft Grade: /50 FINAL DOCUMENT -To be turned in by the deadline-: You will be graded on your complete document, including figures, layout, grammar, spelling, content, concept, format, presentation, expression, design, citation, etc. For each infraction you will lose one point from 100. (Be aware that repeat mistakes will count MORE THAN ONCE!) Your Final Document Grade will be # of infractions. Name: Section: Final Doc Grade: /100 PROJECT LAB CONTENTS: 1. Title Page: Project Name, Author, Course 2. Introduction with location and geologic overview - 1 paragraph a. Figures: Location Map + Geologic Overview Map 3. Point Count Analysis: Very short procedural paragraph a. Figures: Photomicrograph(s) in PPL and XPL with Metamorphic Minerals Identified 4. PT Diagram Discussion - 1 paragraph a. Figure: PT diagram with PT maxima determined and most likely prograde retrograde path superimposed 5. Conclusion Paragraph 6. Citations - Should be compiled using Zotero ( Use the United States Geologics Survey (USGS) citation style in your document. You should have a minimum of 5 credible citations. Note: Once Zotero Standalone is installed, click on Preferences under the Edit tab. Once there click on Cite and go to the Styles tab. Click on the Get additional styles... below the Styles Manger Box. When the Zotero Styles Repository Window opens, click on the geology button within the Fields section. A list of geology journals should now appear. Scroll down to the U.S.Geological Survey and click on it. The U.S.G.S style will now be part of your Zotero system and you can now set your citations to be formatted accordingly in Zotero.
Page2 Materials: Palmer Canyon Metamorphic Rock Sample Thin Section of Sample NEW Optical Microscope with Grid Screen Petrographic grid Procedure: You will collect a metamorphic rock sample from the Palmer Canyon area during our field trip, as explained below. Everyone will collect the same rock. You will thin section the sample (or have it completed by an outside lab) and do a point count assessment. From the obtained data you will then complete an assessment of a Pressure Temperature point for the formation maximum and possible prograde and retrograde path of your metamorphic rock sample. Sample Collection Site: Palmer Canyon (N/2 NW Section 18, T24N, R70W) (42 3'25"N; '10"W): The desired metamorphic rock occurs on a ridge along the southern flank of Palmer Canyon 17 miles west of Wheatland. Iolite occurs in a succession of Archean quartzofeldspathic gneiss, granite gneiss, metapelite, and biotite-chlorite-vermiculite schist north of the Elmer s Rock greenstone belt. The site is accessible from the Palmer Canyon road which is paved to the forest boundary from Wheatland. It lies a short distance further west (in less than a mile) along the Palmer Canyon road and is just north of the road along a short jeep trail running east of the main road. WARNING WARNING WARNING
Page3 It is imperative that you start collecting and analyzing your sample AS SOON AS POSSIBLE I can NO LONGER give I s for delays. That means you will get a 0" if you do NOT meet the deadlines!!! INSTRUCTIONS G Do a mineral assessment of your thin section slide and identify minerals present. Use the NEW screen optical microscopes to do a point count analysis. G Complete field below including naming of the metamorphic rock. G Use the included petrographic grid to estimate the PT point for your metamorphic rock. G Write a short narrative (maximum one page written part) summarizing your results. Include location map and photos, photomicrographs showing minerals identified and your completed PT mineral diagram (electronically prepared copy only!). G For full credit: TURN IN the complete package for grading, including your plots and calculations. YOUR ANSWERS: Sample ID #: Metamorphic Rock Name lineation foliation For grading purposes. Do NOT write here! Detailed Rock description (field notebook entry style) Minerals and percentages Unusual observations
Page4 Name: Section: Please mark or shade the stability area of your metamorphic rock in the Petrographic Grid below: Write a brief description of the possible prograde and retrograde path your particular rock might have taken. Explain your reasoning:
Page5 Point Counting Templates Please Print on clear plastic foil If printed on transparent material, the TINY grid can be taped to a thin section. TINY Point Counting Template 10 x 10 = 100 for thin sections SMALL Point Counting Template 10 x 10 = 100
