GIS Map Creation Process Researched Land Ownership & Studied Field Trip Route Three Field Data Collection Trips April, September, December 2015 Photos and Video GPS Coordinates Field Samples Land Ownership Researched additional information & GIS layers on Internet Used ArcGIS software to create ArcGIS.com on-line map, ESRI Story Map, & ArcGIS desktop map Stop 7 Keough Quarry
Personal Data Collection DELL Laptop Used for internet access and to develop ArcGIS map within software and online at arcgis.com GARMIN GPSMAP 64st Researched & downloaded DNRGPS app to laptop Downloaded field collected data from GARMIN unit with DNRGPS app to laptop Canon SX700HS camera & NOKIA Lumia 521 phone Snapped photos/video and downloaded to laptop Stop 8 - Fossils
Methodology Process: August-September 2015 Planned project schedule and developed project proposal Researched land ownership and access to field trip stops Contacted Dr. Neil Suneson, Drs. Simms, The Nature Conservancy, Camp Egan & Northeastern State University Field Trip, September 2015 Studied field trip route Created topo maps ( & of each stop Created GoogleMaps (aerial and road views) of field trip route Data Collected, April 10, September 25, & December 1, 2015 Conducted field trips Collected photos, videos, and field samples Land ownership determined Stop 5 Chattanooga Shale Researched & Developed Additional Information, October 2015 Edited Videos, Jacob Wells Edited Photos For On-Line Presentation (re-sized for quicker viewing) Posted geographically-associated information (photos, video, pdfs on-line for URL address creation) Visited websites: U.S. Geological Survey, Oklahoma Geological Survey, University of Oklahoma/Center for Spatial Analysis Downloaded On-line Oklahoma GIS Data (into ArcGIS desktop software)
Internet GIS Data Collection Oklahoma Fault & Geological Map U.S. Department of the Interior U.S. Geological Survey A DIGITAL GEOLOGIC MAP DATABASE FOR THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA Compiled by William D. Heran, Gregory N. Green, and Douglas B. Stoeser U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report (pdf of geologic map) (vector and raster files of faults and geologic map) Stop 3 Eagle s Bluff Cherokee County University of Oklahoma, Center for Spatial Analysis (vector data) Basemap Imagery ArcGIS Online
Methodology Process: (continued) Desktop & On-line GIS Map Created, late October 2015 Used Buffer, Clip and Intersection geoprocessing functions to create new project specific GIS layers New data layers uploaded to ArcGIS on-line for map creation (important to decrease file size here for on-line ArcGIS use) Created csv text file of field trip stops with lat/longs, ownership, phone numbers, and associated URLs of additional information (video, photos, maps, PDFs of reference article & related articles), then uploaded into ArcGIS on-line. Manipulated displayed map results to match standard geological unit color expectations and maximize visual readability. Stop 9 - Fossils

Methodology Process: (continued) Story Map Created, Early December 2015 Visited the ESRI Story Map website: RE-created a simplified csv file of field trip stops as directed by the ESRI story map website (Map Tour selection). ESRI Demo Example Edited the simplified records on-line to be more interesting and improve content within story map.
FIXED! Help??? ERROR #2 ERROR #1 Methodology Process: (continued) Story Map Created, Early December 2015 Added YouTube video of the geology field trip stops. Trouble with having correct URL from the Share, Embed buttons in YouTube To FIX this problem, you have to write the correct code into the video URL. Change embed/ watch?v= Click settings symbol (gear) to have video URL verified and thumbnail URL automatically created. Must ADD https: to the automatically created thumbnail URL.

New Insights: Became much more familiar with creating on-line GIS products. Discovered the temporary nature of on-line GIS products when ArcGIS changes its software. Don t worry too much about cleaning up your on-line ArcGIS account files (one click = a day s work GONE!). Improved my knowledge of geology (formations, terms, fossils). More familiar with several organizations: Camp Egan, The Nature Conservancy & OAS. Figured out the quickest and cheapest way to obtain USGS topo maps. Improved videography techniques: ALWAYS use a tripod! Learned how to acquire a photo from a video (MovieMaker snapshot selection). Understand better the variety of options for GMAIL users (photo posting & Google Map creation). Figured out the challenges and costs in obtaining land ownership information. Honed my public presentation skills and confidence. Photo captured from first video attempt at Stop 1 Cherokee Baths April 10, 2015
