TRAIL MAPPING OF GEOLOGICAL HAZARDS & POSSIBLE PREVENTIONS
AERIAL VIEW OF PARK
The outcome of our teams project is to help the visitors to Devil s Den State Park by providing information that can help inform guest on possible geological hazards and processes. Hopefully unlocking some of the mysteries about past deposition of rock units, to presently visible features of geology, and even future dangers that may occur either at the time of their visit or other visits to the parks recreational areas. As well as, providing the park and guest with updated maps of some of the trails in the park, and highlighting some of the geological features on the new trail maps.
The team wants to help serve Devil's Den State Park management, and the guest who visit the park each year with updated map of Fossil Flats Trail showing points of interest and inform of possible geological hazards while they visit the trail or camping grounds on the river at Fossil Flats. In addition we want to upload the map data ArcGIS.com for future people to access. Onsite Contact: Rebekah D. Penny, CIG
Learning Outcomes Relate geological principles to environmental issues. Be aware of the effects of natural hazards such as landslides, rockslides, sinkholes, and floods on humans and the environment. Demonstrate the ability to utilize Global Positioning Systems and GIS technology. Gain understanding into how the scientific method is applied to environmental issues. Demonstrate a foundation in environmental geology prerequisite for higher level courses.
Providing the park officials and guest with updated maps of some of the trails in the park, and highlighting some of the geological features on the new trail map. Addressing areas of risk in terms of sinkholes, landslides, and flooding potential for visitors to the park.
Technology The Team Intends To Use Hand held GPS Units to mark points of interest GIS to upload, overlay, and map the data retrieved with flood plain and geological nature or hazards May require training on GPS and GIS components
Skills To Developed Communication with contacts and team members on project needs and/or help with understanding the goals and technology The ability to organize and manage the team members with their tasks in order to achieve the desired outcome The ability to recognize geological hazards and put into words that general public can readily comprehend The power of team work in obtaining the goals intended
Methodology Zach is the teams go to guy on GIS mapping, GPS maps, contact PR, and geological interpretations Kameron is our teams liaison for communication with Mrs. Dianne Philips in the East Empacts Lab Albert will help develop power points, GPS maps, and geological interpretations GPS Mapping at Devil s Den on 2/9/2013 by whole team with more yet to be done Zach will be uploading data on GIS as GPS and field observations he will also help other members to better understand the GIS. ETA 4/1/2013 Albert will be working on team power point for 2/14/2013 Kameron Will be supplying coffee and donuts for the team as needed
Expected Outcomes Mapping with GPS to produce updated information for the state park and others to use. Adding information to the GIS websites to allow access for the state park to create updated trail brochures with hazards and points of interest
