Disasters in the Region Total number of disasters: (Guha-Sapir D. et al., 2004 ) Hydro-Meteo Geologic Windstorm Earthquake/Tsu. Volcanic Eco. Damage b Events Victims a Events Victims a Events Victims a Events Victims a Events Victims a Events Amount Indonesia ,121 Philippines 242 3, , ,994 SE Asia 623 1, ,867 World 5,600 3, , ,212 1,378,096 a Population affected or killed per 100,000 inhabitants b Disasters that caused severe economic damages, amount is given in million US$. Nearly 75 percent of the world s major natural disasters from 1975 to 2007 are from the Asia-Pacific region. The year was particularly catastrophic for south and south-east Asia due to the Indian Ocean Tsunami with several typhoons, floods, landslides and earthquakes.

Sentinel Asia Under the leadership of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Several space agencies from the region are members Emergency observations during a disaster and provide satellite images to the affected countries Geoinformatics Center,AIT 15 Years of experience More than 1000 have been trained Training Courses Disaster Management Environment Management Natural Resources Management Poverty Mapping
JAXA-AIT Mini Projects Covering wide range of Disasters Flood, Cyclone, Tsunami, Earthquake, Volcano Monitoring, Forest Fire, etc Conducted in 3 Phases Project planning workshop and training at AIT (Aug/Sep 1 month) Fieldwork and local consultation (Nov/Dec 1 week) Final workshop at AIT (Jan/Feb 1 month) 14 Countries Involvement of two important stakeholders at national level; 1) data/product provider 2) data/product user Mini-project area/topic will be proposed by the stakeholders, according to countries needs and priorities (May/Jun)
Mini Projects 1.Project Planning Workshop Participants undergo a week-long training on remote sensing and GIS Presentations are made by the each project participants about their respective project objectives, data requirements, methodologies and expected outcomes Free data by JAXA ALOS (AVNIR-2, PRISM, PALSAR) Training on Microwave remote sensing
Mini Projects Field work & Consultation Field visits are conducted jointly with the participating agencies for field verifications and using ALOS data Lao PDR Cambodia Thailand Mongolia

Bangladesh: Application of Remote Sensing and GIS for Cyclone Disaster Management in Coastal Area
Nepal: Flood Hazard Mapping and Vulnerability Analysis of Bishnumati River
Sri Lanka: Application of Remote Sensing and GIS for Flood Risk Analysis
Results Mini-Projects have helped in individual and institutional capacity building On completion of the Mini-Projects, participants can handle satellite data independently and use them effectively in various applications Conclusion We recognize the needs for the capacity building in the Asia-Pacific region in applications of remote sensing and GIS for disaster management and the Mini-Projects could be an ideal approach to address such needs. Countries can process the data quickly by themselves for immediate response activities after a disaster event
