7 What is GIS GIS is a teaching tool that faculty can use in helping students visualize complex spatial relationships in many disciplines thinking GIS allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts. A GIS helps you answer questions and solve problems by looking at your data in a way that is quickly understood and easily shared GIS is a critical thinking tool that helps students learn methodology to carry out and test the hypotheses of research projects based on real world problems that incorporate real-world data

11 ArcGIS 10 Desktop level of functionality ArcReader: The entry level model which comes with every ArcGIS installation or can be downloaded for free from ESRI website. You can view and print maps created by others, navigate to different part of the map and zoom to various levels of detail ArcView: you can query data, provides all basic of mapping, editing, and analysis functions for shapefiles and geodatabases, (includes ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and ArcToolbox functions) ArcEditor: Gives you complete ArcView functionality and has additional data creation and editing tools plus advanced aspects of the geodatabase, such as topology and network editing ArcInfo: The top of the line Provides access to the full functionality of the ArcGIS Desktop tools and the full version of ArcToolbox. ArcInfo also comes bundled with ArcInfo Workstation, a parallel, self-standing GIS software product ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo share a common user interface and can freely exchange maps and data

12 ArcGIS 10 consists of Two Main Applications: 1. ArcMap: (include mapmaking, editing, and spatial analysis) 2. ArcCatalog: an application of managing geographic data. You can copy, move, and delete data; create new data, search for data; view data before deciding whether to add it to a map You can access toolbox through both applications. The Toolbox is available depending on your level of ArcGIS software license

17 Workspace Is a container for geographic data Workspace is simply a file folder on disk that is used to organize your GIS work map documents, imagery and other data files, geoprocessing models, layers, geodatabases, and so on.

18 Esri Workspace Different types of workspaces are specified by the esriworkspacetype enumerator: esrifilesystemworkspace (such as an ArcInfo workspace), esrilocaldatabaseworkspace (such as a personal geodatabase and file geodatabase), and esriremotedatabaseworkspace (such as an ArcSDE geodatabase).

19 Spatial Data Formats Geodatabases Coverages Shapefiles Layer files CAD (Computer-aided design) files Rasters TINs (triangulated irregular networks) Each format is defined by its icon in ArcCatalog

20 Data files in ArcGIS Coverages Vector data files developed for Arc/Info Coverages are topological data sets and usually contain multiple feature classes Compose of multiple files on the disk and even spread data among multiple folders.adf (arc data file) A folder containing one or more coverages is called a workspace, and it includes an info folder as well as folder for each coverage file

22 Data files in ArcGIS Shapefiles: don t store topology and contain only one feature class Points, lines or polygons Attribute data are stored as dbase file extension (.dbf) A collection of files on the desk, different extensions (.shp,.dbf,.shx) Have green icon

23 Data files in ArcGIS Geodatabases Stored as a single file with an.mdb extention, (MS Access database technology) It contain multiple feature classes, geometric networks, tables, rasters, and other objects such as rules Spatial data can be created as coverages or shapefiles and loaded into geodatabase as feature classes

25 Vector Data Model The Vector data model uses a series of X, Y locations to represent points, lines, and polygon areas

26 The Raster Data Model The raster data model uses array of values to represent a map. The raster is tied to a real-world location using x-y coordinates of the upper left corner

27 The Raster Data Model Discrete rasters stores categorical data such as land use or road types Continuous rasters store data which vary smoothly over a surface, such as a digital elevation mode (DEM) or rainfall

31 What is a Map Document? The map document is a collection of different spatial data layers and tables, along with instructions for how the layers will be displayed The map document keeps track of all layers and their properties

34 Does the map document store the features and tables of the data sets within a map document? No, the source data are stored outside the map document, because the map document stores the source of the name and disk location of the spatial data Map documents keep track of the source files by storing the name and location of each file as a pathname
