1 15. THE GLOBE AND THE MAP 1 DEFINE THE FOLLOWING 1. AXIS : The imaginary line which passes through the centre of the earth and joins the North Pole and South Pole is called the Axis. The earth rotates on its axis from West to East. 2. EQUATOR: The imaginary circle which divides earth into two halves is called the equator.it is the biggest latitude. 3. POLES : The end points on the axis of rotation are termed as the poles of the globe. 4. GRIDS : Grids are the net or the squares formed by the latitudes and the longitudes ll ANSWER THE FOLLOING 1 What is a globe? A globe is a spherical model of the Earth with a map in its surface. 2 Who is a cartographer? A cartographer is the person who draws maps. 3 How does the scale of a map help us? The scale of a map helps us to find out the actual distance between two places with regards to the distance shown on the map. 4 List two advantages of a map. A map helps us to study small places, countries, oceans and even continents. It can be carried easily from place to place It is easier to identify regions in a map. 5 What are the draw backs of a globe? It is inconvenient to carry it around. It does not give us minute details about a place.

2 6 Differentiate between longitudes and latitudes Latitudes Longitudes Imaginary circles around the Earth They run from West to East Imaginary semi circles on the Earth. They run from North to South Lines are parallel to each other Lines are not parallel to each other but it joins North poles and South poles. The lines are not of same length Lines are called Parallels Lines are used for measuring distance Lines are of the same length Lines are called Meridians Lines are used for measuring local time Ill NAME THE FOLLOWING 1 The movement of the earth on its axis Rotation 2 The end points of the axis Poles 3 The two halves of the earth, when divided by the equator Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere 4 The place through which Prime Meridian passes Greenwich in London 5 The unit of measurement of longitudes and latitudes Degrees. Answer the Following 1.Define the word Himalaya Ans : The Word Him in Sanskrit means snow and alaya means home. So the Word Himalaya means an abode of snow. 2.How far does the Himalaya stretch? Ans : The northern parts of India is surrounded by high mountain ranges are called The Himalayas. The Himalayan range starts from Jammu Kashmir in the West to Arunachal Pradesh in the East. 3.What makes the Northern Plains very fertile? Ans: a) The rivers that originate from the glaciers in the Himalayas flow through the Northern Plains. b) They carry good quality of soil called the alluvial soil and deposit them in the Northern Plains. This makes the Northern Plains very fertile and suitable for cultivation Of different crops.

6 4. Describe the three parallel ranges of the Himalayas from West to East. Ans: The Himalayas can be divided into three parallel ranges. a) Himadri Himadri is also known as the Greater Himalayas. Big rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Satlu, Indus and Brahmaputra originate from the glaciers in the Himadri. b) Himachal Himachal is known as the middle Himalayas. It comprises of valleys and hill towns like Shimla, Darjelling and Nainital etc.. These regions are beautiful tourist places. c) Shiwalik Shiwalik ranges are the southernmost and lowest ranges in Himalayas. It is covered with thick forests. 6. List the different ways in which the Himalayas serve our country. a) The Himalayas do not allow the bitter cold winds from Northern Asia to enter India. b) Standing erect and strong they act as shields against enemies. c) They prevent the monsoon winds from moving further north, thus providing rainfall to the northern plains. d)the thick Himalayan forests provide shelter to many species of birds and animals.

These people move from place to place in a desert in search of food and water. 3. Plateau A plateau is a region located at a higher level than a plain but has a flat surface. Eg. Chota Nagpur Plateau and Deccan Plateau ANSWER THE FOLLOWING 1. What kind of weather would you find in a desert? Ans Extreme climatic conditions are experienced in a desert as these areas are dry regions due to the scarcity of rainfall. 2. Give two reasons why desert areas are generally sparsely populated? Ans. The desert areas are generally sparsely populated due to: Lack of water. Extreme climatic conditions. 3. Describe the landscape of the southern part of India?

10 Ans. The southern part of India is occupied by the Deccan Plateau regions that are located at a higher level than a plain but has a flat surface. 4. What kind of crops grow in the Deccan Plateau? Ans. Cotton, Sugarcane, Groundnuts, Oilseeds and Millets are the main crops growing in Deccan Plateau region. IV.
