The Associational WMU will be hosting a Retirement Reception in honor of Linda Williams on Sunday, December 10 th from 2:00 PM 4:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall of East Rogersville Baptist Church. Please come out that day to show your appreciation to Linda for her 39+ years of service to God through the Holston Valley Baptist Association. Linda served with integrity, dignity, and a servant s heart. She has blessed us with her service, and we know that God will continue to bless others through her as she continues to serve Him. Thank you Linda for the excellent example you have set in serving God and the churches of HVBA.

Welcome Melinda In Annual Meeting, upon the recommendation of the Personnel Committee, the messengers of the HVBA voted to hire Melinda Eidson of East Rogersville Baptist Church as our new Ministry Assistant. Melinda will begin serving in this role on Monday, November 27 th. She has been very active in her local church and has served as a teacher and teaching assistant for the Hawkins County School Board for several years. We look forward to how God will use Melinda as Ministry Assistant through the HVBA. Family Features Rev. Jason Roach has resigned as Pastor of Shepards Chapel. Our prayers go up for Jason and his family and to the church as they begin the process of finding their next pastor. Christian sympathy is extended to Rev. Bobby Bentley, member of Morrisetts Chapel Baptist Church and active member of our Jail Ministry, in the loss of his wife Shirley. Puerto Rico Partnership During the Annual Meeting, the messengers of HVBA voted to begin a partnership with a church and pastor in Puerto Rico. The North American Mission Board has assigned us the following: Iglesia Bautista Raham de Guayama Pastor Francisco J. Reyes We will keep you informed as to how the churches of Holston Valley can support Pastor Reyes and the people of the church. Thank you Holston Valley for your grace in serving! Coming in February! Legal Issues Seminar Monday February 12th, 6:30 PM Oak Grove Baptist Church Mr. William Maxwell of the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board will be leading this seminar. Possible topics include Payroll/ Minister s Taxes, Copyright Issues, Personnel Issues, Property Taxes, State Sales Tax, 501(c) (3) tax exemption, and same sex marriage. 3 Volume 131 Issue 3 Page 3 Hawkins County Pregnancy HELP Center Update by Kelly Snodgrass This has been an exciting month! One of the Promise Moms GOT MARRIED to her boyfriend of 6 years. She been a part of the Pregnancy Center for several years and she has two children. We were blessed to be able to have the wedding at our regular Swift Park gathering on Wednesday nights. We are so happy for the Reed family and what this marriage means for their children and their future. The Reverend Charlie Gibson performed the wedding and both of their families attended. 4 Page 4 Mission-Aider Bivocational Ministers and Wives Retreat Thursday 1/25/ Saturday 1/27/2018 Location Music Road Hotel & Convention Center A 3-day event for bivocational ministers and their wives for inspiration, training, and fellowship. Cost is $225 per couple which covers hotel, meals and breaks. Bible Study Classes to Begin on March 5 Several times in the Scripture we are told that the church is to edify and/or equip the body of Christ. We can do this in several ways, such as praying together, strengthening fellowship, the preaching of the Word, and studying the Word. A unique opportunity has been presented to our association by offering Bible study classes through the Seminary Extension ministry of the Southern Baptist Convention. The purpose of the ministry is to provide theological education and ministry training to church leaders and members where they live. We will be offering two classes this next Spring. The first will be How to Understand the Bible led by Rev. Gary Gerhardt, pastor of Church Hill First Baptist Church. The other class will be New Testament Survey, Part 1 led by Rev. Jon Rogers, pastor of Ridgeview Baptist Church. Registration for these classes will be on Monday, March 5th at 6:00 PM. Surgoinsville First Baptist will again be graciously providing the classroom space. These classes will meet for three hours once a week for approximately 10 weeks. The cost for How to Understand the Bible will be $ The cost for New Testament Survey, Part 1 will be $ These classes are open to both clergy and the lay members of the church. You can pre-register for the classes by sending a $50 deposit to the associational office making the checks payable to Holston Valley Baptist Association and designating Seminary Extension on the Memo Line. If your pastor or one of your members wishes to take the class but needs help with the cost, please consider paying for part or all of the fee. For those interested in pursuing a Diploma in Biblical Studies, these classes will be a requirement toward that Diploma; however, you do not have to pursue the diploma to take the class. Missionary Kid Assignment Each year our association is assigned a missionary kid that is attending college in our area so that we can made contact with him or her and share words of encouragement and support. This year, we have Elizabeth Gibbs who is attending The University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Her birthday is December 3re. Elizabeth is a sophomore and certainly would appreciate any show of encouragement, prayer, and support you can share. We have a concrete parking area which is a magnet for snow and ice in very cold temperatures. Freezing conditions make it difficult to drive or walk on this parking area. Therefore, we do not hesitate to close the office when we think having it open would be a danger to our visitors and us. In the coming days of this winter, when the weather is uncertain, please call our office, or before planning to travel our way. If we re closed we will try to leave a message letting you know. If it is cold and snowing with accumulation we will probably be closed if you call and no one answers the phone.
