Thissubmissionhasintensifieddiscussionsandconcernsfromthe internationalcommunity. Sincetheearly980s,Japanhasbeenputingenormousefortsintotheislandisationofthe Okinotorishima Rocks,andhasclaimedan ExclusiveEconomicZone(EEZ)aroundtheserocksupto00nmfromaldirectionsandevenrecentlyclaimedanextendedcontinentalshelfbeyond00nm. Through thissubmission,japanexpectstoconfirmitseezclaimsof40,000square kilometersinadditionto,550squarekilometersofterritorialsea,andanecs inthreeregionsbasedontheokinotorishimarocks. 4 Thefarthestareasbased onthe OkinotorishimaRocksextendupto550nauticalmiles,togetherwith rightstoenforceonmaritimeactivitiesandresourceswithintheclaimedzones.
