1 Curriculum Map for Science/8 th grade/lab Safety, Periodic Table, Metrics, Sound&Light First Trimester Targeted Standard(s): NJCCCS A (1-4) B (1-3) C (1-2) A (1-3) B (1-2) A, B, C, D (1-4) A, B, C B (1, 2 + 4) Interdisciplinary: NJCCCS Technological Literacy 8.1A, 8.1B; Career Education and Life Skills/Critical Thinking 9.2A, 9.2C, 9.2D Enduring Understandings (The big ideas): Students will understand the importance of lab safety, before and after a lab begins. Afterwards, students will understand how the scientific method can be used for all type of inquiry. They will also understand metric conversions to English units and English units to metric. Finally, students will understand how light and sound is transmitted and received. Essential Questions: How do we perform a lab safe and effectively? How can I apply the steps of the scientific method to solve any type of analytical problem? What aspects of the scientific method can we apply to our every day lives? What is the purpose of a hypothesis? How do we use quantitative and qualitative data to develop a conclusion? What is the SI international system of units? Why is it important to master conversions from English to metric and vice versa? How does the anatomy of the ear help transmit sound waves? What happens to sound when it passes through different mediums? How does the speed of sound relate to other waves such as light? How does the anatomy of the eye receive light waves and transmit images to the brain? What happens to light when it passes through different mediums?
