1 Due Date: Dec. 14, 2017 Material/Chemical Structure and Function Objective: PStd. 1 Investigate how the structure of a chemical matches its function. Analyze and apply scientific information to issues confronting society, from a personal to a global level. This project is an investigation of material design. You will investigate and report on the importance of chemical structure (how atoms are connected in a compound) to the function of the chemical (what the compound does) by comparing and contrasting 2 different compounds/materials that have similar functions. Each student will investigate different compounds from other students by signing up for compounds on the list provided. The Project will consist of the following sections in this order: A cover sheet with a title and your name; A written report in paragraph format; A reference section which contains a Works Cited page (citations in MLA format), Judging Reliability pages and an Evaluation of Works Cited page; A grade sheet. The 1 st Semester Project will be worth 75 points. The entire project should be typed with a font no bigger than 12, using correct spelling and punctuation. Plagiarism will result in 2/75 pts. for the entire project until it is redone.
2 Written Report ~ for each section use correct spelling, punctuation and paragraph format Introduction ~ -explain your understanding of the purpose of doing this project and what the focus of your report will be -explain why you chose the materials/compounds you signed up for Concept I ~ -List all names for your compounds, including synonyms, common names and trade names. -Show the chemical formulas in 2 different formats for each compound: (check that both formulas match) molecular formula it expresses the number of atoms of each element within one molecule of the compound structural diagram it shows how the atoms/components in the material are connected to each other; you may cut and paste in a diagram or draw it yourself (if cut/pasted, cite reference on Works Cited page) Concept II ~ -Explain how the structure of each compound is critical to its function in a way that a non-science person would understand; be specific! -Define for the reader any words specific to the function that a nonscience person would need to understand in order to know what your compounds do. (examples: capacitor, diode, thermoplastic, resin, etc. ) Concept III ~ -Compare/contrast the two different compounds by explaining how they function in a similar way and how they function differently. ~Describe current uses of each compound. -Analyze why one of the compounds considered an improvement over the other. ~Describe some problems or issues that exist with the better compound. -Infer what the future uses for the better compound might be. Conclusion ~ -Summarize what you learned from doing this project. -What do you conclude about the importance of a chemical s structure compared to its function?
