MS Algebra A-SSE-1b Ch. 2.5 Expressions with Distributive Property Mr. Deyo Apply the Distributive Property to algebraic expressions using appropriate terms, factors, and coefficients

Title: 2.5 Apply the Distributive Property to Expressions Date: Learning Target By the end of the period, I will apply the distributive property to algebraic expressions with appropriate terms, factors, and coefficients. I will demonstrate this by completing Four- Square Notes and by solving problems in a pair/group activity.

Problem A Solve a multi-step problem EXERCISING Your daily workout plan involves a total of 50 minutes of running and swimming. You burn 15 calories per minute when running and 9 calories per minute when swimming. Let R be your running time in minutes. Find the number of calories you burn in your 50 minute workout if you run for 20 minutes.

SOLUTION The workout lasts 50 minutes, and your running time is R minutes. So, your swimming time is (50 R) minutes. STEP 1 Write a verbal model. Then write an equation.

Problem A Solve a multi-step problem EXERCISING STEP 2 C = = 15R + 15R + = 6R + 9 ( 50 R ) R Find the value of C when R = 20 C = 6R C = 6(20) = 570 Write equation. Distributive property Combine like terms. Write equation. Substitute 20 for r. Then simplify. ANSWER You burn 570 calories in your 50 minute workout if you run for 20 minutes.

Problem B EXERCISING C = 15 R + 9 (W R) Suppose your workout (W) lasts 45 minutes. How many calories do you burn if you run for 20 minutes?

Problem B EXERCISING C = 15 R + 9 (W R) Suppose your workout (W) lasts 45 minutes. How many calories do you burn if you run for 20 minutes? ANSWER 525 calories
