5 Environmental Monitoring at OSS General approach An environmental monitoring collects environmental information to help decision-making Such a system includes the processes of: Acquisition: collecting data in the field in a systematic and iterative manner Processing: statistics, spatialization and modeling via GIS... Analysis and synthesis of the environmental characteristics evolution (biophysical and socio-economic data) in time and space, The methodology selected to ensure the monitoring is adopted and validated during scientific workshops organized for this purpose

17 Issues and/or challenges The region of North Africa, because of its position in the arid zone, faces three major challenges: aridity, recurrent drought and desertification. The economy and people's livelihoods are based primarily on the exploitation of natural resources including water and land. Less / No opportunity to work in partnership between countries and partner organizations in the North African sub-region. The existing achievements are not shared / valorized. Data sharing constraints, political instability of some countries Wide coverage area (~6 millions sq km), water scarcity issues aggravated by climate change 17

18 Services OSS is a COPERNICUS relay, and the free Sentinel-2 data represent an added value for the three services due its high spatial and temporal resolution Promoting its use is more realistic and efficient in pilot areas, representative of the context and problematics chosen by the country The end users are involved in the services development (from expression of needs until the finalization of the services) scaling-up will be implemented by the national partners : approaches can be replicated and the results extrapolated 18
