22 Location- Where is it? Everything on earth has its own location- the place where it can be found

23 Place- What is it like there? Every place has physical and human features that make it different from all other places. Physical features are formed by nature.

24 Regions- How is this place like other places? How is it different? Areas of earth with main features that make them different from other areas are called regions. A region can be described by it physical features or its human features.

25 Movement- How and why do people, goods and ideas move to and from this place? People, goods, and ideas move every day. They move in your state, our country and around the world.

26 Human- Environment Interaction: How does this place affect people? How do people affect this place? People and their surrounding affect each other. People's activities may change the environment. The environment may affect people, sometimes people must change how they live to fit into their surroundings.

27 NC s Water North Carolina has many rivers and lakes. People enjoy using North Carolina s Rivers and lakes for fishing, boating, and other kinds of recreation. People also depend on these bodies of water to meet their daily needs.

30 NC s W ater- R ivers Many of NC s rivers have their source, or beginning, high in the Appalachian Mountains. From there, they join other rivers and flow across the Piedmont and the Coastal Plain to the Atlantic Ocean.

31 NC s W ater- R ivers Rivers flow swiftly through the mountains and the Piedmont. On the Coastal plain, rivers spread out and slow down, they leave sand and soil on banks and floodplains carried down from the mountains. A floodplain is low, flat land along a river.

32 The Cape fear river is one of the state's best-known rivers. Many tributaries join the Cape Fear river as it flows southeast toward the coast. A tributary is a river or stream that flows into a larger river. The Haw and Deep Rivers are tributaries of the Cape Fear River

33 A river and its tributaries make up a river system. A river system carries rainwater and melted snow and ice away from the land around it. The Cape fear river drains one-fifth of the state's land area.

34 s e k a L NC In addition to the state's rivers, there are also many lakes. Some lakes are natural. Others are reservoirs, or human-made lakes that store water. Reservoirs are often formed when dams are built.

35 ee k s u e k a L t tam t a M The largest natural lake in North Carolina, Lake Mattamuskeet, makes up most of the Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is an important gathering spot for migratory birds. From September to late feb. thousands of geese swan and ducks come to the refuge to enjoy the warmer temperatures and to feast on tall grasses and crops grown for that purpose
