Understanding Geographies Important to understand the various geographies that data is released at: Official Census Level Geographies: Statistical Wards Lower Super Output Areas (LSOA) Nested within wards. Average 1,500 people. Used for variety of official statistical release. There are 396 in Leicestershire. Output Areas (OA) Nested within LSOAs. Smallest level of census geography, average 300 people. More information on LSOA names is available here: online.org/reports/leicestershire_and_rutland_lower_super_output_area_names l / /l h l d l More information on geographies can be found here: more about areas.htm areas.htm Other Relevant Geographies: Parishes Community Forums Census data available at these levels using LSOAs as a proxy in some cases
Quick Profiling Tools The following websites have profiling tools to quickly access profiles for a given area: Neighbourhood Statistics Enter a postcode under FIND STATISTICS FOR AN AREA or NEIGHBOURHOOD SUMMARY and follow the instructions to access a range of Census datasets. NOMIS l l l f h d d f ll h Select a level of geography under SUMMARY STATISTICS and follow the instructions to access a range of labour market statistics.
2011 Census Census statistics help paint a picture of the nation and how we live. They provide a detailed snapshot of the population and its characteristics, and underpin funding allocation for the provision of public services. Key Statistics 33 datasets covering: Demographics (age, sex, ethnicity, religion) Housing (tenure, number of rooms) Economic (employment codes, travel to work) Health and caring A Leicestershire headline report is available here: online.org/reports/census_2011_key_statistics_headline_report Leicestershire Local Authority Population Data is available here: online.org/reports/census_2011_population_by_sex_and_five_year_age_bands_unrounded population sex and year age bands unrounded Leicestershire Local Authority Key Statistics dashboard is available here: online.org/reports/census_2001_key_statistics_for_local_authorities
Other Data Sources NOMIS asp Labour market statistics and profiles A selection of Census data is also available to download from this website Workforce, unemployment and benefit claimants data Neighborhood Statistics and 2011 Census data Data down to small geographies (output area and LSOA) Neighbourhood h profile fl tool Need to understand a little about geography to get the most out of data National General Practice Health Profiles national general practice profiles updated Contains information on; Quality and Outcomes Framework domains, disease prevalence estimates, admission i rates and patient satisfaction if i Useful for comparing and benchmarking across England.
Contextual Datasets 1 Indices of Deprivation 2010 (ID2010) The ID 2010 provide a relative measure of deprivation for LSOAs across England. The indices consist of seven domains constructed from 38 indicators relating to a specific aspect of deprivation. The seven weighted domains below are combined to form the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD): Income Health Deprivation & Disability Living Environment Crime Barriers to Housing & Services Education, Skills & Training Employment The Income domain includes two sub domains exploring income deprivation affecting children and older people Creates scores for each domain which can be used to rank areas across and between areas. Allows some measure of change over time. Represents a useful policy tool for identifying most deprived areas across different themes. A Leicestershire headline report can be found here: online.org/reports/indices_of_deprivation_2010_leicestershire_headline_results li / /i d i i l i hi h dli l
Contextual Datasets 2 Rural Urban Classification 2011 (RUC11) Released August 2013 Available at ward, LSOA and OA level Classifies areas into three typologies: Urban City and Town Rural Village and Dispersed Rural Town and Fringe Analysis for Leicestershire will form part of the Rural Evidence Base, currently being produced. For more information, visit: method/geography/products/area classifications/2011 rural urban/index.html
Contextual Datasets 3 Output Area Classification Freely available socioeconomic dataset, similar to MOSAIC and ACORN. Uses data from the 2001 census, aiming to classify areas with similar characteristics. This information is useful to many groups including government departments, local authorities, health authorities and academics. Possible applications include demonstrating broad geographic patterns, categorising data for further analysis, identifying similar areas for comparative studies, and providing information for marketing purposes. A Leicestershire report is available here: online.org/reports/2001_census_output_area_classifcations/download/1/2001%20census%20ou / l /d l d/ / tput%20area%20classifications.pdf Planned to be updated as part of the Census work programme in More information (including cluster summaries) is available here: method/geography/products/area classifications/ns area classifications/index/cluster summaries/output areas/index.html i / l i / d l
LSR Online A Leicestershire partnership research portal, used for the publication of various datasets and research reports across a variety of theme areas. Available at: online.org/ Statistics Various datasets available at a range of geographies: online.org/datasets bygeography.html Data can be searched for by area and displayed in tabular, chart or map format Reports Searchable by keywords Online repository for Research and Insight Team s reports on a range of subjects, including data and analysis from the 2011 Census A range of partnership reports available
