3 Status of satellite data reception Operational Products/Departamento de Pronóstico/Sensores remotos Equipment for GOES reception (installed 2010), receiving on daily basis GOES 13, GVAR system with TERASCAN software from SEASPACE, every 30 m argentine sectorized and every 3 hours full disk.
4 Status of satellite data reception Non Operational/Departamento de Teledetección Non operational (Monday through Friday) remote sensing products from polar orbit satellites The actual equipment since 1994 is an Quorum Communications HRPT Data Capture Engine, with a circular polarized antena, TAC-2 and 3 receiving plates (PC-HRPT AVHRR Data Receiver, PC-HRPT AVHRR Bit/Frame Synchronizer, PC- ST1 SatTracker 1).The software is Qtrack V2.5. Receiving from NOAA series. CLASS NOAA (LAC) 1KM.
5 Status of planning to receive new data (from GOES-R and other) GOES R To update our system to GRB planned for In case of purchase the equipment, it will include all (1-4) the system components of the ANNEX 1 of the Draft Roadmap Version 1.0 The installation of a reception system should include a mass storage system and a good communication network. The development of a new set of algorithms for encoding and compression of large amount of data should be recommended (Big Data issues?) The SMN would exchange with other RAIII and RA IV countries data and metadata and final products. Moreover, the SMN would evaluate to upload the information to GEONETCAST-A.
6 Status of planning to receive new data (from GOES-R and other) GOES R The GOES R reception system products help for nowcasting and emergencies responses: Weather forecasts and warnings Hydrological forecasts, warnings and assessments Disaster mitigation and preparedness Volcanic Ash Detection Search and rescue in open waters. Open sea ice monitoring
7 Status of planning to receive new data (from GOES-R and other) GOES R The GOES R reception system products help to asses: Climate predictions Space weather applications Land monitoring (e.g., for agriculture) Environmental issues Oceanography and marine meteorology Retrieval radiances for use in DAS (Data Assimilation System)
8 Status of planning to receive new data (from GOES-R and other) GEONETCAST-A CONAE: GEONETCAST-A station ( there is no enough documentation about) installed at the the CONAE facilities in the province of Córdoba. The link to the products is
9 Status of planning to receive new data (from GOES-R and other) GEONETCAST-A SMN: Lic Diana Rodriguez is the liaison for GEONETCAST-A, member of the Users and Contents Committee, and actively participate in the GEONETCAST-A Coordination Group. The SMN plans to buy 1 (one) GEONETCAST-A station at the end of GEONETCast-Americas would serve as a backup system. Not a EUMETCast-Americas user, but there is some hardware to convert to GEONETCast-Americas station. SMN is still working on the conversion

26 Needs for capacity building and training Forecast Offices challenges The goal of the training plan is to ensure that forecasters are ready to integrate GOES-R data and products into forecast and warning operations from the beginning of GOES-R operations. (from GOES-R Training Plan for NOAA National Weather Service (NWS) Forecasters; LeRoy Spayd Jr.., NOAA/NWS, Silver Spring, MD, 21st Conference on Satellite Meteorology, August 2016). After forecasters complete the training modules they should be able to: 1)understand the differences between legacy GOES and GOES-R observations; 2) interpret and utilize GOES-R ABI imagery and derived products in the preparation of NWS forecasts and warnings; 3) utilize the GLM in forecast and warning operations; and 4) understand the fundamentals of Red-Green-Blue (RGB) satellite product techniques and apply these to the identification of meteorological phenomena.

28 Needs for capacity building and training Classroom courses: Must convene international experts on the operation as well processing of satellite equipment and imagery respectively. Therefore, it is recommended that they should take place at some country in the region with regional scope. Argentina as an unique Spanish speaking South American Centre of Excellence is willing to house them. Training material language: The need of spanish/portuguese translations it is strong institutions technicians, researchers and forecasters requirement
29 Needs for capacity building and training Each country Meteorological Service should Send at least two Forecasters/Supervisors to in-situ training (1-3 months) to return with the enough expertise to attend the forecasts challenges for developing the tasks of a SOO (Science and Operation officer). Pre launch (hopefully) and post launch training. Creation of a similar to NCEP South American desk oriented to remote sensing? The SOO in his/her country will be in charge of the reception of the equipment, supervising the installation, verification that it works properly and establish a fluent comunication with the vendor. The SOO must be the liaison between the Research and Development group and the Operational personnel. (Science into Operations)
30 Needs for capacity building and training Each country should Send a young scientist graduate on Atmospheric Science to a Proving Ground and Training Center in the USA, with the aim to research about this matter. PhD candidates under collaborative programas between RAIII & IV countries and USA universities?
31 Needs for capacity building and training I) SMN Course of Environmental Teledetection (Already described in the presentation about regional needs) RECOMMENDATION: To update this agenda for future courses with the help of GOES R experts Polar new generation of satellites (NPP, JPSS1, TERRA y AQUA) and Geostationary (GOES-R) II)Development of Conceptual Models about the new generation of polar satellites and GOES R. English/Spanish/Portuguese
32 Needs for capacity building and training III) Development of Train the Trainer online courses about the new generation of polar satellites and GOES R. English/Spanish/Portuguese IV) SSEC University of Wisconsin workshop: SMN will restart the conversations by November 2016 with the aim to coordinate the organization of this event for some time during Regional scope.
33 Needs for capacity building and training Promote RA III & IV the course Sensoramiento Remoto de la Atmósfera desde el Espacio" Departamento de Ciencias de la Atmósfera y los Oceános (DCAO)/FCEyN University of Buenos Aires (UBA) (already described in the regional needs presentation) Postgraduate course in spanish for graduate students on Atmospheric Science and related disciplines.
34 Questions/Conclusions/Suggestions Create a Regional Center for the RAIII and RA IV respectively, for the reception and training. RA III and IV Forum for discussion A Consortium among the countries from each RA?. To provide an unified basic training for: Technical personnel about the reception equipment installation, operation and maintenance. Technical personnel about the storage of large amount of data. Forecasters of different regions, who will apply what they have learnt to develop new products customized for the needs of each country Technical personnel/forecaster for the implementation of GEONETCAST-A
35 Questions/Conclusions/Suggestions Create a Regional Center for the RAIII and RA IV respectively for the reception and training. A Consortium among the countries from each RA?. To provide experts guidance Researchers who wants to investigate new applications.
