DRARS Coordination Meeting Contribution from IMD Dr. Ashim Kumar Mitra Ministry of Earth Sciences India Meteorological Department New Delhi-INDIA March 2015
The Processing System of NOAA/METOP/MODIS satellites at IMD
India Meteorological Department has procured and installed three ground receiving and processing systems for NOAA/METOP and MODIS satellites for New Delhi, Chennai and Guwahati. It is a high end tracking antenna subsystem with radome following the EUMETSAT recommendation for METOP and also for NOAA (USA) and Chinese Polar Orbiting satellites along with a real time reception and processing of MODIS data and derivation of quantitative products.

The NOAA/METOP/MODIS ground station is a highperformance, dual X- and L-band system that tracks, receives and processes data from the NASA Terra and Aqua satellites, and the US NOAA, EUMETSAT MetOp satellites Level-2 science products are derived from the Terra/Aqua MODIS, NOAA/MetOp AVHRR and ATOVS payloads. Up-to-date Two-Line Elements (TLEs) and other ancillary data are required for the correct operation of this system. The site administrator is responsible for providing and maintaining a reliable internet connection so this data can be updated automatically.
In addition to above, a website has been developed for New Delhi/Chennai and Guwahati for putting all images and products from this system along with archive of each for one month on the website: The website has provision to display the products/ images from the processing systems already installed in Sat. Met. Division i.e. the website has the capability of expansion. The system shall be able to receive the Polar orbiting satellites in future for next 7 years

Status of the Direct Readout station(s) (Operational, in test, degraded, etc.) Acquisition Workstation. Houses the receiver and pre-processes the raw data. This pre-processed data is automatically transferred to the Data Processing Workstation for image generation; Data Processing Workstation. Receives pre-processed data from the Acquisition Workstation and produces final image products according to user-defined setups. These final image products are automatically transferred to the Display Workstations; and One or more Display Workstations. Each Display Workstation runs the software METEOR product for the display and analysis of satellite imagery. All image products are transferred automatically to these machines from the Data Processing Workstation.
Currently, New Delhi, Guwahati and Chennai Station receiving data regularly and being disseminated to the users.

It is found that India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Chennai and Delhi HRPT stations are very useful in filling data void regions in Asia-pacific RARS. (NCMRWF)
Issues and plans -Some technical help to convert NPP data to the BUFR format. -Display/Retrieval of Global RARS data for NWP Group (websites or FTPs) -Ready to contribute INSAT-3D sounder data to RARS network (HDF/Bufr) (Temporal Frequency- 1 hour)
