2 EUMETSAT Advanced Retransmission Service (EARS) Objective To provide Users with high timeliness regional data from Polar Orbiting Meteorological Satellites in support of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and Nowcasting (NWC). 11 Extending EARS-VIIRS with the Day/Night Band (1/3) The EARS-VIIRS Service is currently providing the 16 VIIRS Moderate resolution channels (M-Band). In response to user request, new extension implemented to include VIIRS Day/Night Band. The natural data rate of the VIIRS Day/Night Band SDR is 16 Mb/s, which is considered prohibitive for establishing such service. Data rate reduced by a combination of: Storing geolocation data on Tie-Point grid only as for VIIRS M-Band Service (CVIIRS tool); Storing Radiance using a tailored HDF5 Floating Point representation: 12 bits Mantissa Size of Exponent chosen dynamically depending on the actual range of radiance values in each granule 1 bit Sign Applying standard compression. 11 EUM/SEP/VWG/16/ Version 20 September 2016

20 Roadmap EARS in (EPS, EPS-SG, FY-3, JPSS, Meteor, based regional services) EARS is now an operational, multimission system providing services (formally approved till 2020). We need to design and implement the successor /continuation system, being adapted to the increased number of satellites, services to be supported, new instruments, higher demands in therms of timeliness and/or availability,. We also need to consolidate the approach with partners for station services provision,. This has started with a capacity analysis of regional network in the context of future satellite availabilty and convergence with EPS-SG operations will lead to a new generation EARS EARS in the era needs to be defined and agreed by Delegate Bodies (in ) and start being implemented in (ready for EPS-SG and before end of current apporved services -2020) 20 EUM/SEP/VWG/16/ Version 20 September 2016
