NOAA Direct Broadcast Real-Time Network Status Liam Gumley (CIMSS/SSEC/UW-Madison) Mitch Goldberg (JPSS/NOAA) WMO DBNET Operators Meeting Sept 2016
Overview NOAA antennas for Honolulu, Madison, Miami, and Mayaguez are owned and operated by SSEC. NOAA/SSEC has full control over these antennas. NOAA antennas for Fairbanks and Monterey are owned and operated by UAF and NWS. Partner antennas are owned and operated by other groups: Corvallis (OSU), New York (CCNY), Tokyo (JMA), Edmonton (EC), and Greenbelt (GSFC).

Remote Antenna Operation and Monitoring SSEC Data Center runs Orbital Systems EOS FES Commander at each antenna site. Hardware status (pedestal, feed, downconverter, demodulators) are all monitored. Pass schedules are set automatically by the EOS-FES based on the priority order set by SSEC. Daily schedules are published at 0 UTC.
SSEC Data Center monitors the status of all NOAA antennas
Daily schedule: Hawaii
Reception Priorities for NOAA Antennas 1. Suomi NPP (and JPSS-1 in spring 2017) 2. Terra and Aqua 3. Metop-A and Metop-B 4. NOAA-18 and NOAA GCOM-W1 (#1 at Miami) 6. FY-3B and FY-3C 7. SARAL
Reception Priorities for Partner Antennas Satellite reception schedules at partner antenna sites are set by the local operators. For Monterey, Gilmore Creek, and Corvallis, SNPP is priority #1 (these antennas were funded by NOAA). Monterey and Gilmore Creek both provide SNPP and Metop data. New York City and Greenbelt only provide SNPP data.
Future Antennas #1 X/L-band antenna will be installed at NWS office in Guam by the end of 2016, funded by NOAA/JPSS. It will provide data for DBRTN. Guam
Future Antennas #2 X/L-band antenna will be installed at Hampton University in Virginia by end of 2016, funded by NASA. It will provide data for DBRTN. Hampton

EARS Pilot Service NOAA DB network will provide ATMS, CrIS, and IASI data in AAPP BUFR format to EUMETSAT by the end of 2016 for dissemination via EARS as a pilot service. Agreement between EUMETSAT and NOAA has been signed. Duration of pilot service will be two years. BUFR products from SSEC processing have been verified against the corresponding EARS products.

Data usage at NCEP ATMS, CrIS, and IASI BUFR files from the NOAA DB network are now routinely ingested by NCEP. Note: these are NESDIS-specific BUFR formats. Code to handle IASI, CrIS, and ATMS from the NOAA DB network is now a part of NCEP's GSI assimilation system. NCEP is planning to IASI, CrIS, and ATMS from the NOAA DB network in the Global Forecast System. Regional rapid-refresh models will follow. NCEP is also planning to use IASI, CrIS, and ATMS from DBNET (formerly RARS).
Other Applications The NOAA antennas at Honolulu, Madison, Miami, and Mayaguez provide real-time imagery from VIIRS, AVHRR, and MODIS via onsite processing. Images are converted to AWIPS format and delivered to National Weather Service Forecast Offices across the USA. ARGOS DCS data are received from NOAA-18/19, Metop- A/B, and SARAL at Honolulu, Madison, Miami, and Mayaguez and delivered to CLS in real time. GCOM-W1 is received and processed in real time at AOML Miami and imagery is provided to the National Hurricane Center (coming soon from Mayaguez).
