6 Meteorology Summary Statewide Overview, Next 24 Hours: One last area of rainfall is moving through the Big Bend and Northeast Florida this morning. Dry air has already moved into the Panhandle and will move into the Big Bend this morning and Northeast Florida this afternoon. By sunset this evening, rain chances will only be confined to the Peninsula south of the I-4 corridor. Skies are expected to be clear across North Florida with breezy northerly winds. By midnight, rain chances will be offshore and dry air will have moved into the entire state. High temperatures today will only be in the 50s in North Florida and the 60s in Central Florida. Temperatures will still reach the upper 70s and lower 80s across South Florida and the Florida Keys. A widespread light freeze is expected tonight across North Florida. Low temperatures will drop to degrees across inland areas and degrees along the coast. Freeze Warnings are in effect for inland areas and Freeze Watches are in effect for the coast. Temperatures will fall to degrees north of the I-4 corridor in Central Florida, particularly along the Nature Coast. With the light northerly winds continuing overnight, temperatures will feel like they are in the lower 20s in the Panhandle and the middle and upper 20s across the rest of North Florida. Given the recent string of warm weather last month, vegetation will be more sensitive than usual to this freeze event. Low Temperatures Tonight Freeze Warning Freeze Watch
7 Coastal Hazards / Hydrology Rip Currents: Breezy northerly winds will result in a moderate rip current risk at Panhandle beaches from Walton to Franklin County. A low risk is forecast for all other Florida beaches. Wave heights will be 1-3 at the coast, but building to 4-6 offshore. Remember, always swim within sight of a lifeguard. Never swim alone. Rip currents can still occur on low risk days! Lake Okeechobee average elevation is feet, which is 1.79 feet below normal for this time of year. Releases are ongoing and lake levels will continue to gradually fall. Hydrology: There are two River Flood Warnings in effect. The Apalachicola River at Blountstown and the Santa Fe River at Three River Estates is forecast to reach minor flood stage by Wednesday and remain there into this weekend. Several other North Florida rivers are in action stage. For more information on specific rivers, please visit the Southeast River Forecast Center here. Current & Forecast River Conditions Rip Current Outlook
8 Drought & Fire Weather Fire Weather: Soil moisture is starting to dry out in some counties in South Florida resulting in a low wildfire threat today. Winds will be out of the northwest at mph statewide. Rain chances today will prevent a higher wildfire threat, but drier air moving into the state tomorrow will likely result in an increased threat for the remainder of the week. A County Burn Ban remains in effect for the 5 counties that are in effect year-round. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index average for Florida is 173 (-11) on a scale from 0 (very moist) to 800 (very dry). There are zero Florida counties with a KBDI above 500. Drought Monitor Active Wildfires (Florida Forest Service)
