SWBAT use the composition of a sedimentary rock to identify the rock and to infer its history of formation. DO NOW Direction: Read and ANNOTATE the information then, list the facts given in the article. Circle or write the phrase to make a statement correct 1. I am lava, I form (intrusive / extrusive) igneous rocks. 2. I am magma, I form (intrusive / extrusive) igneous rocks. 3. Where are intrusive igneous rocks formed? 4. If an igneous rock cools slowly it will be (fine / coarse) grained. 5. If a big crystal is formed, the igneous rock has cooled (quickly / slowly). 6. Solidify means. 7. As it takes longer to cool, the rock will have a (coarser / finer) texture. 8. Intrusive igneous rocks cool (quicker / slower) than extrusive igneous rocks. 9. 4 THE Original PARFAIT CLASS NOTES SEDIMENTARY ROCK: There are three processes that lead to sedimentary rock forming: Weathering: Erosion: Deposition: deposits sediment in layers, eventually The most noticeable feature of sedimentary rock is it layers, called STRATA: **One layer is called a A single, horizontal layer of rock is sometimes visible for many miles. 4

5 COMPOSITION OF SEDIMENTARY ROCK Sedimentary rocks can be classified by the way it forms. CLASTIC SEDIMENTARY ROCK: Clastic rocks can be classified by sediment : CHEMICAL SEDIMENTARY ROCK: As rainwater slowly makes its way to the ocean, some of the rock material it passes through. Some of this dissolved material eventually sedimentary rock. that make up chemical 5

7 ORGANIC SEDIMENTARY ROCK: The remains eventually become Coal is a type of organic sedimentary rock that is formed when decomposed plant material and is changed by increasing heat and pressure. Coral reefs are organic sedimentary rocks made by creatures that are still living! Corals build their own homes from. STRUCTURES OF SEDIMENTARY ROCK Many features indicate the way sedimentary rock is formed. STRATIFICATION: Strata differ from one another depending on the properties of their sediment: 7

8 RIPPLE MARKS: MUD CRACKS: FOSSILS: The mineral parts (shells, bones) are more easily preserved as fossils. Bryozoan: Tiny coral-like creatures. Brachiopods: Ancestors of modern sea shells. Gastropods: Snails and slugs Trilobite: Ancestors of the horseshoe crab Crinoids: Sea lily Cephalopod: Squid-like with a tubular shell. 8
