4 INTRODUCTION The New Mexico Rangeland Brush and Weed Control Research-demonstration Program aims to increase the productivity and value of ranch land. The program is offered as a university service to the ranching industry in the state. Information gathered from research-demonstrations is publicized in newspapers, magazines, radio and television. Field tours are held periodically so the interested parties may view plots while they are in progress. Research data are published in scientific journals and agricultural experiment station bulletins and research reports. It must be stressed that data found from a single research-demonstration are not conclusive and should not be used as a basis for general recommendations. However, they offer the advantage of being conducted on individual ranches under actual field conditions. Through repeated trails, over a period of years, it is possible to draw conclusions useful to ranchers, county agents, land management agencies, chemical companies, chemical distributors and others concerned with the ranching industry in New Mexico. Information from this program is used to refine and update range brush and weed control recommendations provided in the Chemical Weed and Brush Control Guide of New Mexico Rangelands, Circular 597, available from the Cooperative Extension Service. Progress in agricultural production and technology are due in large part to commercial companies who develop, test and distribute their products. Their commitment to progress is substantiated by their willingness to furnish equipment and herbicides for use in accomplishing our research goals. The technical assistance rendered by these companies is of great value to our program. We wish to express our appreciation to the county agents of the Cooperative Extension Service, personal with various land management agencies (Bureau of Land Management, U. S. Forest Service, Soil Conservation Service and others) and certainly ranch cooperators for their efforts which continue to the success of the range brush control program. Monetary support is provided by the Renewable Resources Extension Act, Range Improvement Task Force, various chemical companies, the Agricultural Experiment Station, and the Cooperative Extension Services. Similar range brush control trials are grouped in this handbook. A brief description is provided for each demonstration. The description provides information on location, treatments, date established, date evaluated, conditions and plot diagram. Plot diagrams are not drawn to scale but are provide to help identify location of treatments if someone wished to view the demonstration in the field. Information presented in this handbook is for informational and educational purposes only. Product names included in this publication are listed in the back of this handbook and are not intended as an endorsement of the product of a specific manufacturer. No implication is intended that any other formulation containing the same active ingredient is not equally effective. Product names are used solely as an aid in locating and identifying herbicides used. 1
