1 PAKISTAN RED CRESCENT SOCIETY MONSOON 2011 Update Update: WEATHER FORECAST NEXT 24 HOURS Widespread thundershowers with heavy falls at scattered places & very heavy falls at isolated places is expected over the upper catchments of Rivers Sutlej, Beas & Ravi. Scattered thunder showers are expected over the upper catchments of River Chenab, North &Northeast Punjab. Isolated thundershower is expected over south Punjab, Sindh & Khyber Pakhtunkhwa MONSOON SPELL CONTINUES Flood Forecasting Division Reports: The current spell of monsoon rains would continue for next 1-2 days in the country. As a result, some more rains with isolated heavy falls are expected in lower Sindh (Districts Hyderabad & Mirpur Khas), upper Punjab (Rawalpindi, Gujranwala & Lahore Divisions) and Kashmir during the next hours. River Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala is likely to attain Low Flood Level with flood flows ranging between 50,000 to 70,000 cusecs during the period from 0100 hours PST of 16 th August, 2011 to 0100 hours PST of 17 th August, Today: Scattered rain/thundershower with isolated heavy falls in Punjab, Sindh and Kashmir. Scattered rain/thundershower also in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Northeast Balochistan. SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL (in mm) Significant rainfall events reported during the past 24 hours include: Mithi=32, Kotnaina=31,Muzaffarabad=23, Lahore(Shahdara=21,Shahi Qilla=08,Upper Mall=07, Misri Shah &City=06 each& Airport=02),Shakargarh & Bahawalnagar=15 (each),domel G.S.Wala=14(each), Khuzdar& Rawalakot=12(each), Palandri=11,Murree=08, Balakot =07, Gujranwala(Cantt) &Kakul=06(each), Bahawalpur (City=06 &Airport=03), Sibbi=05, Karachi(Airport)=04, Sargodha(Airport=04&City=03), Chhor, Okara & Kalam=03 (each), Sehrkakota, Kurram garhi, Oghi & Faisalabad=02(each),Sialkot (Airport=02&Cantt =Trace), Ura, Chattarkallas, Phulra, Nowshera, Kotli & Lasbela =01(each), Shorkot, Gilgit, Sahiwal, D.G.Khan, Multan, Bannu & Skardu=Trace(each) RIVERS STATUS River Ravi at Balloki is in Low Flood Level and rising. River Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala is likely to attain Low Flood Level tonight. Rest of the rivers flowing in normal levels, and even after yesterday s rains, the depth and inflow outflow remains either low or below low. Nula Lai is currently flowing at normal level at all of its observation points.

2 PRCS ACTION Starting from 11 th August 2011, the monsoon spells in Punjab and Sindh have caused inundation and affected a large amount of people in these provinces. PRCS Response teams including trained staff and volunteers (response, first aid, health and care) were on stand-by incase of any emergency and the PRCS Branches in Punjab and Sindh were and still are closely monitoring the situation; along with regular coordination with the local Govt. and authorities. PRCS RESPONSE Punjab: The PRCS Punjab Branch reports that the Narowal District is the most affected and accordingly PRCS has responded by provision of 40 tents to the local Govt. and has pitched 10 tents on its own just as a contingency if evacuation occurs. Similarly situation is being monitored in the Kasur District where there are a large amount of houses near the river bed. Sindh: According to NDMA/PDMA information and UN reports(of 12 and 13 Aug), the following situation is currently in place in Sindh: Deaths: Varying inputs indicate between 20-23; 1 Map of Sindh Province showing districts Population: Between 500,000 to 750,000; Districts: Badin comes out as the worst affected and others being Tharparkar, Mirpurkhas, Umarkot, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Adam Khan, Thatta & Hyderabad: Losses: Extensive losses of livestock, katcha houses, cotton and rice crops and red chillies (cash crop of Tharparkar) are reported; IDPs: There are reports of 60 IDP camps established in Badin and perhaps in other affected districts. Cumulative figures are not known; and Population Migrations: Population and livestock are reportedly migrating to safer areas in Tharparkar and other adjoining districts which could stretch relief efforts.

3 Badin: In District Badin, Heavy intermittent rains also played havoc prompting shifting of around 40,000 rain- affected people to 86 relief camps set up in all five tehsils of the district Badin. PRCS Disaster Management Officers (part of the rapid assessment team) report that about 1,500 villages and crops over a large swath of land were flooded when more than 40 breaches occurred in the Left Bank Outfall Drain (LBOD), along with over 20 saline water drains and irrigation canals, after heavy rain battered southern Sindh s Badin district. PRCS Sindh Branch reports the following no. of people affected that have been brought in the Relief Camps established in Govt. PRCS Rapid assessment team has conducted an assessment of the MirpurKhas District with accessibility as low as 30% due to standing water and inundated infrastructure. According to the

5 initial findings of the team, 6 tehsils of Mirpurkhas and a total of 215,500 people have been affected. To response to this inundation/flooding, the PRCS Sindh Provincial branch has handed over the following relief items to the PRCS Branch in Mirpurkhas for distribution: i. Blankets 500 ii. Tents 100 iii. Stoves 300 iv. Bedding (chitaiyan) 300 v. Hygiene kits 200 vi. Kitchen Sets 50 vii. Tarpaulin sheets 200 viii. Mineral Water 6000 ltrs Overall situation being closely monitored and coordination with local authorities is being done regularly.
