1 Lakewoods Village, Klamath County, Oregon VOLUME 5, ISSUE 4 OCTOBER NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2009 Winterizing your home The cold, snowy season is quickly approaching, now is the perfect time to ensure your cabin is ready for the winter. The following tips should help you prepare your mountain home for the forthcoming weather. Trim any tree limbs which may be hanging over or touching the roof; large amounts of snow fall can cause these limbs to break off of the tree and fall onto your cabin. While up there, survey your roof. Check for loose masonry, as well as water or smoke leaks around the chimney. Check for nests in vents; make sure critters aren t able to gain access. Remove and store lawn furniture and ornaments; outdoor grills should be covered or stored. Check all your outdoor lighting; replace burnt out bulbs. Drain and remove garden hoses; although they may be frost free, they will freeze if they remain connected to your cabin. Drain and close exterior water lines; including those to a sprinkler system. You may want to put a well insulated cover on your spickets as well. Mark your water meter and/or water shut off so it is easier to find in the snow. Also, be sure your generator and/or propane bottle remain dug out of the snow. There are also things to be aware of inside your cabin. Inspect your chimney for soot build up; close dampers until ready to use. Check that all windows and doors close and seal properly and that weather stripping is in good condition; caulk where necessary. Set your thermostat no lower than 55 F. Have the heating Inside this issue: system serviced once a year, or according to the manufacturer. Cook s Corner 2 Examine hot water heaters for leaks. Winterize (cont.) 3 Also, it s a good idea to have a friend, relative, or neighbor check on Halloween 3 your cabin from time to time, especially if you re not able to make it to Bulletin Board 4 Lakewoods as often as you might like. Make sure this person has easy Volunteer Training 5 access to your snow shovel. (continued on page 3, see Winterize)
2 Directions Heat extra-virgin olive oil in a soup pot over medium to mediumhigh heat. Add the carrot, celery, onions, garlic, rosemary, bay leaf, salt and pepper, to taste. Sauté until the vegetables are soft, about 7 to 8 minutes. Stir in the canned beans and tomato paste, and cook for 1 minute. Add the stock and water, then cover and bring to a boil. Add the pasta and let simmer in the soup for 5 minutes, then add the green beans and simmer for 3 to 4 minutes more. Remove bay leaf. Turn off the heat. Add the lemon zest, lemon juice and the parsley. Taste and season with salt and pepper, if necessary. Discard the rosemary stems. To serve, ladle the soup into shallow bowls and garnish with cheese. Great with toasted bread. Cook s Corner Three Bean Pasta e Fagioli As seen on Rachael Ray s 30-Minute Meals on the Food Network. 3 Winterize (continued from page 1) During the winter season, Klamath County is responsible for plowing both Dead Indian Memorial Road and Clover Creek Road. The internal road system for Lakewoods Village is the responsibility of the Lakewoods Owners Association. The Association will contract the plowing; snow plow efforts will be conducted between 6a.m. and 6p.m. If heavy snow occurs after 6p.m. it will be addressed as soon as possible after 6a.m. the following day. Snow removal will not be performed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, or New Year s Day. These guidelines may change prior to the first snow plow. Please remember when these roads are plowed, a berm (a mound of snow, slush, etc.) may be created at driveway entrances. This berm is the responsibility of the homeowner to remove. Homeowners are required to place all necessary snow poles on their property prior to the first major snowfall. Snow poles are used to indicate each side of the driveway and/or around address logs or landscaping features which may be accessible by a snow plow. If you arrange to have your driveway plowed during the wintertime, remember to also use the snow poles to mark where steps begin, and where planter areas and/or cement landings are located. Past winters have given us 12 foot drifts; hopefully this will be a relatively light year. However, be ready for anything. Be prepared and be snow smart when planning a winter trip to Lakewoods; have the right tires, clothing, and accessories and check the weather! The Story of Halloween (from Halloween is one of the oldest holidays with origins going back thousands of years. The holiday we know as Halloween has had many influences from many cultures over the centuries; from the Roman's Pomona Day, to the Celtic festival of Samhain, to the Christian holidays of All Saints and All Souls Days. Hundreds of years ago in what are now Great Britain and Northern France, lived the Celts. The Celts worshipped nature and had many gods, with the sun god as their favorite. It was "he" who commanded their work and their rest times, and who made the earth beautiful and the crops grow. The Celts celebrated their New Year on November 1st. It was celebrated every year with a festival and marked the end of the "season of the sun" and the beginning of "the season of darkness and cold." On October 31st after the crops were all harvested and stored for the long winter the cooking fires in the homes would be extinguished. The Druids, the Celtic priests, would meet in the hilltop in the dark oak forest (oak trees were considered sacred). The Druids would light new fires and offer sacrifices of crops and animals. As they danced around the fires, the season of the sun passed and the season of darkness would begin. When the morning arrived the Druids would give an ember from their fires to each family who would then take them home to start new cooking fires. These fires would keep the homes warm and free from evil spirits. The November 1st festival was called Samhain (pronounced "sow-en"). The festival would last for 3 days. Many (continued on page 6, see Halloween) Page 3
4 Homeowners Bulletin Board Remember to have your generators serviced once every year! Charlie Gannett, Gannett Enterprises, of Grants Pass will gladly service your generators! We were glad to participate as newcomers to fire training. It's good to feel that we can be helpful to our neighbors and those in potential trouble nearby, even if we're only up in Lakewoods periodically. The importance of being part of this was clear in this remote area. Besides that, we also valued the chance to get to know some of our new neighbors and to feel a part of this wonderful community! -Julie and Mike Contact Charlie at (office), (cell), or gannett@charter.net Don t forget! Set your clocks BACK one hour when Daylight Saving Time ends. The official time change is at 2:00am on November 1. Most of the United States begins Daylight Saving Time at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday in March and reverts to standard time on the first Sunday in November. In the U.S., each time zone switches at a different time. We would like to welcome the newest members of the Lakewoods Village Community: Dawn & Steve Borgwardt at Lot 205, 7835 Skycrest Drive Bryce & Cassandra Blankenship at Lot 223, 7710 Skyview Circle Page 4 Volume 5, Issue 4

Halloween (continued from page 3) people would parade in costumes made from the skins and heads of their animals. This festival would become the first Halloween. During the first century the Romans invaded Britain. They brought with them many of their festivals and customs. One of these was the festival know as Pomona Day, named for their goddess of fruits and gardens. It was also celebrated around the 1st of November. After hundreds of years of Roman rule the customs of the Celtic's Samhain festival and the Roman Pomona Day mixed becoming 1 major fall holiday. The next influence came with the spread of the new Christian religion throughout Europe and Britain. In the year 835 AD the Roman Catholic Church would make November 1st a church holiday to honor all the saints. This day was called All Saints' Day, or Hallowmas, or All Hallows. Years later the Church would make November 2nd a holy day. It was called All Souls Day and was to honor the dead. It was celebrated with big bonfires, parades, and people dressing up as saints, angels and devils. But the spread of Christianity did not make people forget their early customs. On the eve of All Hallows, Oct. 31, people continued to celebrate the festivals of Samhain and Pomona Day. Over the years the customs from all these holidays mixed. October 31st became known as All Hallow Even, eventually All Hallow's Eve, Hallowe'en, and then - Halloween. The Halloween we celebrate today includes all of these influences, Pomona Day's apples, nuts, and harvest, the Festival of Samhain's black cats, magic, evil spirits and death, and the ghosts, skeletons and skulls from All Saint's Day and All Soul's Day.
