1 Content Objectives TLW understand, describe, and explain the importance of family customs and traditions (TEKS 12A) TLW compare family customs and traditions (TEKS 12B) TLW identify examples of technology used in the home and school (TEKS 13A) TLW describe how technology helps accomplish specific tasks (TEKS 13B) Language Objectives TLW express ideas orally based on knowledge and experiences TLW create and interpret visuals, including pictures Needed Materials/Supplies Pictures that depict celebration of Halloween Halloween True-False activity Drawing paper and crayons or markers Vocabulary custom, tradition, celebrate, activity, costume, Halloween S.E.E. Significant Emotional Experience What pictures can be used to make abstract concepts concrete? View, Preview, Overview, Review 1. Show students the pictures that depict Halloween and ask: What do you see in these pictures? What do you think is happening? Who are the people in the pictures? Record student responses on the board or on chart paper. 1

2 DO TALK How can students manipulate the concepts? What activity will get the students engaged in an instructional conversation? 1. Write the words Halloween, custom, and tradition on the board or on a chart. Point to each word, one at a time, and have students practice saying the words aloud; clap the syllables. 2. Ask: Have you ever heard any of these words before? 3. Mini Lesson: Say: Today we re going to talk about some of the customs and traditions of Halloween. Explain the meaning of customs and traditions (your usual ways of doing certain things). Customs become traditions when they are handed down from one generation to the next. Give several examples so that students understand the concept. Examples might include the following: 1) An American custom is to stand and sing the National Anthem before sports events. 2) In Houston, at the end of January, Chinese families celebrate their New Year by marching through the city streets in a dragon parade. Men carry a giant dragon over their heads. (Parades are also part of other holidays and celebrations such as Juneteenth, Veterans Day, and Thanksgiving.) 3) If you swing at a piñata during a party, you re following a Mexican tradition. 4) On Friday evenings, many Jewish families celebrate the Sabbath. They say prayers and share bread. Then they go to the synagogue, a place where they can worship together. 5) Ask: How many of you decorate trees at Christmas? This custom/tradition comes from Germany. At Christmastime in Germany, families cut trees and bring them into their houses to decorate with candles, ornaments, and ribbons. Now let s talk about customs and traditions that are about Halloween. Tell students that some families celebrate Halloween and some families do not. Ask: How many of you celebrate Halloween? What are some things you do? 2

3 (Responses might include: dressing in costumes, decorating their houses and yards, giving candy to visitors, carving pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns, going trick-or-treating.) Tell students that some communities and churches hold Fall Festivals as an alternative for those who do not celebrate Halloween. At the festivals, you will find food, games, and a lot of fun. Ask: Have any of you ever gone to a Fall Festival? Some people believe that going to a Fall Festival is safer than going trick-or-treating. Ask: What are some things you can do to stay safe on Halloween? (Students responses might include: go trick-or-treating in groups or with your family; wear costumes that have reflective material on them; let parents check your candy before you eat it.) Ask: What are some things you can use to help keep you safe on Halloween? (Responses might include: use battery-operated tea light candles instead of real candles; carry a flashlight with you when you go trick-or-treating.) TRANSFER How can the student demonstrate knowledge of the concepts in academic English? 1. Create a visual: Tell students to think about their own Halloween customs and traditions. Have each student an illustration that shows one way they usually celebrate Halloween. 2. Create a visual: For those students who do not celebrate Halloween, tell them to think about something that makes them think about fall, such as leaves on trees turning brown, raking leaves, wearing a jacket, pumpkins, etc. 3

4 3. True-False Activity: Make several statements about Halloween and about customs and traditions, and tell the students to say True or False after each statement. Or they could perform some other action such as standing up for True and sitting down for False; or clapping once for True and twice for False. Examples of Statements: All people everywhere celebrate Halloween. A custom is your usual way of doing certain things. Decorating a Christmas tree is a custom for some families. Some families do not celebrate Halloween. Going trick-or-treating is a Halloween custom for some families. It is important to stay safe on Halloween. 4
