Some people cannot wait for the cooler weather, snow, skiing and ice skating, curling up by a fire and the holiday spirit. Other people dislike the frigid temperatures, snow and ice that are often part of the season. Nevertheless and regardless of whether winter is among any of our favorite seasons, winter is officially here and The Villages at Belvoir team wants all residents to know that we are ready to tackle any winter weather that may come our way! For your reference so that you, too, may be prepared to tackle any winter weather, following is our Inclement Weather Policy as it pertains to snow. In general, our snow plan calls for plowing of all roadways once 2 of snow has accumulated. The plow trucks will start working on clearing roadways bumper-to-bumper and curb-to-curb. Once the roadways have been cleared enough to allow for the safe passage of two vehicles, or cleared to their widest point, the plow trucks will spend more time on clearing parking spaces, dead ends, driveway entrances, and alleyways that are not obstructed by vehicles. Continued on next page

2 glass Page 2 Eat Seasonally Winter Vegetable Soup Ingredients 1 tsp olive oil 2 ounces pancetta, chopped 1 cup chopped onion 3 garlic cloves, minced 2 cups cubed, peeled acorn squash 2 cups diced, peeled red potato ½ cup chopped celery ½ cup chopped carrot 1 tsp dried basil ¼ tsp ground cinnamon ¼ tsp dried thyme 1 (28-ounce) can whole tomatoes, drained and chopped 2 (14 ½ ounce) cans chicken broth 4 cups chopped kale 1 (15.5 ounce) can navy beans or other small white beans, rinsed and drained Preparation Heat oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add pancetta; sauté 3 minutes. Add onion and garlic; sauté 3 minutes. Add squash and next 6 ingredients (squash through thyme), stirring to combine; cook 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add tomatoes; cook 2 minutes. Stir in broth; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer 8 minutes. Add kale; simmer 5 minutes. Add beans; simmer 4 minutes or until potato and kale are tender. BE PREPARED FOR WINTER WEATHER When plowing and clearing is required due to accumulation as previously noted, so that it may be performed safely and effectively, we ask that all residents: (continued) Park all vehicles in your garage, driveway, or designated parking space Move any vehicles you may have parked on any roadway, dead end, or alleyway to your garage, driveway, or designated parking spot Not shovel your vehicle and/or parking spaces out until contractor has cleaned the roadways curb-to-curb or bumper-to-bumper. This will help you from having to duplicate your shoveling efforts. If you live in a Village with no garages or driveways and you need to utilize parking spaces or roadways, everyone is asked to please park on the same side of roadway when possible. It would be helpful upon returning home if you moved your vehicles into areas that have already been cleared by the contractor. Doing so will help speed up the plowing process within the community by allowing the snow contractor access to all paved areas. Do not park in front of areas the contractor is using to pile snow. Please do not stop the contractor and request that they plow your individual space, as this will surely slow the process down. Make every effort not to shovel out cars and walks and place the snow back in roadways. This will prolong the cleanup process immensely. Instead, place shoveled snow in lawn areas and islands where possible. Please instruct children on the danger of playing in or around roadways especially during these types of events. Having them play in common grounds and back yards away from roadways is the safest approach. Depending on the amount of accumulation, shoveling of sidewalks by our team normally starts when snow accumulations have ended. Crews will work their way through the community clearing common sidewalks only (not sidewalks that lead from common sidewalks to front doors). The sidewalk crews will treat all areas they have cleared with calcium or potassium chloride. Please remember that as outlined in your Resident Responsibility Guide, that you are responsible for removing snow from the sidewalk that leads from your front door to the common area sidewalk as well as from your driveway/parking pad. To assist you with your efforts, a limited supply of sand and/or ice melt and loaner snow shovels will be available at the Self Help Center should you want to use the items. Interested residents may pick the items up at the Self Help Center during regular business hours when inclement weather happens. If your family has special needs and you require assistance with the snow removal process, please contact your Community Management Office before bad weather hits to discuss your request. Additionally, and as always, please remember that should you experience a maintenance emergency or power outage at any time, including when inclement weather occurs, please call our 24-hour emergency maintenance line at to report the emergency or outage.

5 Page 5 Maintenance AND Safety Corner Open your garage door manually if the power goes out or the remote malfunctions How to Open Your Garage Door Manually For many, the automatic garage door is one of the many features that have added to modern living s conveniences. However, when the power goes out or the remote is broken, the automatic garage door becomes useless or does it? Even without electricity or a working remote, the manual opening of your garage door using the emergency release cord will make sure that you are not stuck at home. All garage door openers in your home here on Fort Belvoir are equipped with an emergency release cord. The cord hangs down from the center rail of the garage door mechanism and should be close to the top of the garage door. Follow these simple steps to open your garage door manually using the emergency release cord: 1. Locate the emergency release cord. 2. Pull the emergency cord in a downward motion to disconnect the door from the garage door opener. This will disengage the door from the track and allow you to open and close the door manually. 3. Lift the garage door straight up until the door is fully open. Make sure the door will remain open before leaving it unattended. 4. Call the 24-Hour Maintenance Line at so that we can dispatch a technician to repair the garage door. The technician will reconnect the door back onto the track. SAFETY WARNING: Garage doors are heavy and can cause damage if they fall on you. Make sure the garage door is in the full up position before letting go. Also, be certain to keep children away from the door while performing this operation. If you should ever experience a MAINTENANCE EMERGENCY at your home, please call our 24-hour Maintenance Line Meet The Villages Team! Name: Suubi Barlow Job: Community Manager- Vernondale Office How long have you worked here? 6 months What is your favorite part of working at The Villages at Belvoir? I have been working in property management for the past eight years. Now working in military housing, the best part is working with the families from all branches, being able to help families resolve issues and providing events for our Service members and their families to enjoy.

6 Page 6 Winter weather can be frightening and make for dangerous travel. Before getting behind the wheel, make sure you familiarize yourself with these tips for driving in winter conditions. Tips for driving in the snow: Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Applying the gas slowly to accelerate is the best method for regaining traction and avoiding skids. Don t try to get moving in a hurry. And take time to slow down for a stoplight. Remember: It takes longer to slow down on icy roads. Drive slowly. Everything takes longer on snow-covered roads. Accelerating, stopping, turning nothing happens as quickly as on dry pavement. Give yourself time to maneuver by driving slowly. The normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop. Know your brakes. Whether you have antilock brakes or not, the best way to stop is threshold breaking. Keep the heel of your foot on the floor and use the ball of your foot to apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal. Don t stop if you can avoid it. There s a big difference in the amount of inertia it takes to start moving from a full stop versus how much it takes to get moving while still rolling. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, do it. Don t power up hills. Applying extra gas on snow-covered roads just starts your wheels spinning. Try to get a little inertia going before you reach the hill and let that inertia carry you to the top. As you reach the crest of the hill, reduce your speed and proceed down hill as slowly as possible. Don t stop going up a hill. There s nothing worse than trying to get moving up a hill on an icy road. Get some inertia going on a flat roadway before you take on the hill. Stay home. If you really don t have to go out, don t. Even if you can drive well in the snow, not everyone else can. Don t tempt fate: If you don t have somewhere you have to be, watch the snow from indoors.
