2 Weathernet is a Cunningham Lindsey company and provides weather services dedicated to the construction industry. We draw upon information from an exclusive nation-wide network of manned and automatic weather stations located in and around the major urban areas of the UK where most building activity occurs (Figure 1). Our database currently holds over half a million daily weather records and we update from the full network each week, so our data is never more than 7 days old. All information that we collate is fully quality controlled, and accessible by postcode, county or UK grid so we can immediately identify the most appropriate information for your site. We have long period averages from all of our stations, and our informative graphical reports clearly demonstrate periods of exceptional or adverse weather. Regular Reporting Services Weathernet provides a variety of comprehensive, relevant and easily understood standard reports. These are available for all stations in our network and can be immediately despatched by post, fax or . Data can be supplied in all common pc formats (Excel, DBF, ASCII etc) so that it can be incorporated directly into your reports / appendices and used in statistical work. Our monthly station returns give a day by day account of the weather and include monthly averages with deviations and are available for per month per station. They can help to identify days lost to adverse weather, and substantiate claims for time extensions, thus proving that the weather was markedly different from normal or particularly exceptional / extreme. For an additional weekly deviations or deviations in working days can also be provided. Our national monthly summary costs 3 per month and reviews the weather for the whole of the UK, providing extremes and deviations for temperature, rainfall and sunshine. Climatological Reports We have long period averages from all of our stations, typically based on the last decade's weather. Our weather averages report, give averages for each month for up to 18 different elements including rainfall, number of wet days, number of days with air frosts, ground frosts etc. These reports can help in tendering for work, and making more accurate allowance for days likely to be lost due to inclement weather. Reports cost. We can also provide information as to the normal monthly and annual pattern of wind speed at a site (Wind Averages Report). These cost per station and can give you an idea of hours and days that are likely to be lost when operating cranes and high scaffolds. Consultancy / Case Studies Weathernet can provide consultancy, studies and tailored reports to order. We can customise reports to accommodate specific time frames, like (only) weekdays and daylight hours. We can produce average monthly and annual wind roses, and calibrate sites for mean wind speed and maximum gust using latest BRE software. Long Range Forecasts For UK forecasts 7 days to a year in advance we refer you to Weather Action plc at the South Bank Technopark, London Road, London SE1 LN; Tel: -7988;

3 Live Forecast Service / Weather Warnings Weathernet maintains a live operator service which gives you the opportunity to discuss the latest forecast for your area with a meteorologist direct. The service is charged on a higher premium rate basis ( 1.8 per minute) direct to your telephone bill. Some cards are included at the back of this brochure, which you may care to distribute. Weathernet Live Line Tel: 9-1 Our weather warnings service predicts the nature, severity and extent of inclement weather up to days in advance (Sample ). Ample warning of impending severe weather gives you the opportunity to better manage your resources, and helps you to avoid weather sensitive plant and machinery lying idle. The service is available on a subscription basis for per month, with warnings broadcast by / fax. Corporate Accounts Weathernet is happy to service corporate customers with climate, historical weather and forecast information from all of their UK sites in their entirety. This can help rationalise your buying, cut down on administration and significantly reduce the cost of your total annual weather spend. An Annual subscription package can include a direct line to our meteorologists, site specific forecasts despatched each day by / fax, and a free facility to generate historical reports whenever they are required for all of your sites. If you require a quotation or would like to discuss your detailed requirements then please call Steve Roberts on Weathernet operates 8:3am-9:pm 7days a week. All prices quoted are exclusive of vat. If you have any queries regarding the services described, please call one of our team who will be happy to help. It was especially warm around the beginning and end of the month although there was a period of rather cooler weather during the third and fourth weeks. January is traditionally the chilliest month of the year, and in folklore, the th, St Hillary's Day represents the coldest day (there is little evidence for this in fact, although this year, the th was indeed cold with sleet reported as far south as Dorset). Sunshine in January was abundant everywhere except for the north west, with many places enjoying % more sun than normal. All of the last months have been sunnier than average for the UK, and 1 of the last 1 warmer than average. Despite the general mildness, which is commonly associated with it being wet, January was very dry for much of southern and eastern Britain, and some places recorded just a quarter of their normal rainfall. Only in the extreme north and west was it significantly wetter than average. Heavy rain led to localised flooding in Cumbria, with mm of rainfall falling in hours in Brampton around the 1th. The river Eden burst its banks at Carlisle, and the Tyne overflowed at Haltwhistle leaving flood waters feet deep. Further south and west, in Anglesey, many roads and houses were flooded, and the moat of Beaumaris Castle overflowed for the first time in years. January usually represents the windiest month of the year in the UK and this year was expected to be stormier than most with higher than average sea surface temperature anomalies over the North Atlantic. In the event, the first of the New Years storms arrived on the nd / 3rd. mph winds battered northern Scotland, leaving thousands of homes without power and all ferries cancelled to the Northern Isles. Residents of the Western Isles described conditions as the worst in living memory, and a gust of 1mph was recorded on the island of North Rona. Some of the BBC's Castaways on Taransay started to have second thoughts... Conditions over central and southern Scotland were much less severe although ski slopes in the Cairngorms were closed due to blizzard conditions. As seems to be the case for many January's the month also ended on a stormy note with severe gales over Scotland on the 9th causing further disruption. In foreign fields, the cleanup operation from December's gales continued in France, with power finally restored to all homes by mid month although the national electricity board mused that it would take years for all of the damaged infrastructure to be made good. In Venezuela, the aftermath of December's devastating series of mudslides was further clouded by allegations that the president had decided to take a holiday and was drunk and partying with Vidal Castro on Cuba. South America continued to be inundated in January, and heavy rains in south-eastern Brazil swept away bridges and flooded several districts leaving thousands homeless and 8 dead. Meanwhile, Perth, Australia, saw one of the longest heat waves on record, with every day to the th experiencing temperatures of 3 C or more. In marked contrast, parts of the Middle East were hit by the worst storms in years around the 18th. High winds were accompanied by driving snow, which left picture postcard scenes but caused chaos on the roads, and major disruption to communications and power. Jerusalem had inches cover, parts of the Negev desert saw its first snow covering in years and feet of snow were dumped on the capital of Jordan, Amman. Fortunately, every cloud has a silver lining, and the resulting melt-waters served to replenish the sea of Galilee, Israel's main source of drinking water after it had become dangerously depleted following from last summers drought.
