1 Vol. 67, No. 2, February for Micrometeorology, Fritschen and Gay's (1979) Environmental Instrumentation, or a collection of manufacturer's brochures. Nevertheless, I welcome Boyd's text and recommend it to experimental meteorologists and instrumentation specialists as a clear and concise treatment of the background of radiometry. Anyone whose optical physics is a bit rusty can profit from the consistent review of topics relevant to radiometry, collected in one place. Professors can view the text as excellent teaching material if the backgrounds and needs of their students coincide with the strengths of the book, although I expect the text will be used in physics or optics courses rather than in atmospheric-sciences departments. At a minimum, the text should be available to students in instrumentation courses to give them an appreciation for the underlying physics of the devices they are likely to use. Meteorological research employing radiometry will be strengthened if we practitioners use carefully the analysis of detector noise, and improvements in instrumentation could result from thoughtful study of the basics that Boyd presents. Geological Survey, 604 South Pickett St., Alexandria, VA 22304). This book is a collection of 1660 bibliographic references on the causes and environmental effects of acidic atmospheric deposition. Categories of information include: atmospheric chemistry, precipitation chemistry, transport and deposition, aquatic environments, terrestrial environments, effects on materials and structures, air and precipitation monitoring and data collection, and modeling studies. Included are short summaries of most of the documents used and a coauthor and subject index. The Atmosphere, An Introduction to Meteorology (E K. Lut- gens and E. J. Tarbuck, 1986, 496 pp. $32.95, hardbound, from Prentice-Hall, Inc.). The authors designed the text to meet the needs of students enrolled in an introductory meteorology course. The text was designed to present current and comprehensive material in a nontechnical, nonmathematical way. The book is mainly designed to be used by students as a tool for learning the basic concepts of meteorology. It is abundantly illustrated. Review questions and a list of vocabulary words are presented at the end of each chapter. A detailed glossary is included at the end of the text. El Nino North. Nino Effects in the Eastern Subarctic Pacific Ocean (W. W. Wooster and D. L. Fluharty, Eds., 1985, 312 pp. $10.00, paperbound, from Washington Sea Grant Program). The phenomena known as El Nino and its effects are addressed in this text. Papers are presented that deal with the effects of this phenomena along the west coast of North America. Particular attention is given to the region extending from Northern California to the Gulf of Alaska. The papers explore the changes in the physical environment, both atmospheric and oceanic, brought about by the El Nino event and the biological responses of organisms to those changes. An extensive bibliography is included. Exposure Commitment Assessments of Environmental Pollutants, Volume 4 (K. C. Jones and B. G. Bennett, 1985, 33 pp. $4.00, from Monitoring and Assessment Research Centre, Chelsea College, University of London, The Octagon Building, 459A Fulham Rd., London, SW10 0QX) Summary assessments of the exposure of man to environmental pollutants are presented. The effect of aluminum in soil, air, plants, diet, and water is considered. This text is the fifth in a series dealing with the exposure of man to environmental pollutants. The absorption and distribution of aluminum into the body is addressed as is the retention of the substance in the body. Global Change (T. F. Malone and J. G. Roederer, Eds., 1985, 512 pp. $59.50, hardbound, from Cambridge University Press). The interactions between the physical and living world are explored, as are the environs and life in the biosphere. Emphasis is placed on the wide-ranging effects of global change on the earth and consideration is given to the tools and technology involved in monitoring global change. The book is designed for climatologists, meteorologists, and environmenatal and earth scientists who would like a summary of the current knowledge of the effects of global change. Forest Fires and Their Control (E. S. Artsybashev, translated by K. Bakaya, 1984, 168 pp., $15.00, from A. A. Balkema). Forest fires, their nature and development, are addressed in

2 Bulletin American Meteorological Society 203 Scientific Basis for Water Resources Management this book. The author describes the designs of various fire observation towers and masts, and he explores the different methods that exist in detecting forest fires. Chapters include: "Nature of Forest Fires/' "The Effect of Various Factors on the Intensity of Combustion and the Rate of Spread of Forest Fires/7 "Detection of Forest Fires/' and "Methods of Extinguishing Forest Fires." (M. Diskin, Ed., 1985, 446 pp., $40.00, paperbound, from International Association of Hydrological Sciences). Papers from the proceedings of the Jerusalem Symposium held in September 1985 are assembled in this text. The water-management issues discussed in these papers include the importance and role of data and information forecasting, hydrology of arid and humid areas, rainfall-runoff and basin processes, and water quantity and quality management in regional water-resources systems. Monitoring Earth's Ocean, Land, and Atmosphere from Space Sensors, Systems, and Applications (A. Schnap, Ed., 1985, 830 Sun, Weather, and Climate pp., $79.00, hardbound, from American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.). The impact of remote sensing from space can best be seen in the number of successful applications of information obtained from meteorological, environmental, land, and ocean observation satellites. Remote-sensing programs have reached beyond the boundaries of the United States. Over 140 countries are now participating in the acquisition of meteorological and Landsat data in real time. The chapters in this book cover the principal activities of the remote sensing of the atmosphere, the land, and the oceans from space. Key programs and political and international activities in remote sensing are discussed. (J. R. Herman and R. A. Goldberg, 1985, 360 pp., $7.95, paperbound, Dover Publications, Inc.). This volume was originally published by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. It explores the link between solar activity and the weather and climate. Correlations between solar activity and weather and climate, physical linking mechanisms, and experimental concepts for investigations are made. The chapters explore topics such as solar-related correlation factors and energy sources, long-term climatic trends, short-term meteorological correlations, and recapitulation of sun-weather relationships. Wind Energy Data for India Recent Advances in Planetary Meteorology ( A. Mani and D. A. Mooley, 1983, 545 pp., hardbound, $25.00, from Allied Publishers, 13/14 Asaf Ali Road, New Delhi, India). Wind-speed and windenergy data are presented for use in the design and operation of wind-energy conversion systems in India. The book makes use of tables in which hourly wind speeds and monthly means of daily surface and upper wind speeds are recorded. Wind climatology in India is addressed. Five appendices contain a list of units and symbols, a glossary, and an extensive bibliography. (G. E. Hunt, Ed., 1985, 161 pp., $39.50, hardbound, from Cambridge University Press). Seven papers by leading workers in the field of planetary meteorology are assembled in this text. A description of planetary atmospheres on a comparative basis is given. The authors address the importance of Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn as natural laboratories in the investigation of geophysical fluid-dynamical chemical problems. The chemistry of the Venus atmosphere, the meteorology of Mars and Martian duststorms, and the dynamics of Jupiter and Saturn are explored. 5 THE LLP THUNDERSTORM SENSOR FULLY AUTOMATIC REPORTING OF THUNDERSTORMS FOR AVIATION A N D SYNOPTIC WEATHER OBSERVING SYSTEMS The advent of Automatic Weather Observing Systems (AWOS) represents the first major improvement in surface weather reporting in 40 years. However, airspace users and weather forecasters need more from AWOS than centerfield winds and touchdown zone ceiling and visibility. That's why LLP developed the first fully automatic, stand-alone thunderstorm sensor for aviation and synoptic weather reporting applications. The LLP Model 420A Thunderstorm Sensor provides any AWOS-equipped airport, helipad, or remote observing site with an accurate, minute-by-minute description of terminal area thunderstorm conditions. And since many AWOS have voice synthesizers, the thunderstorm reports can be broadcast directly into the cockpit alerting pilots to the presence of rapidly changing and potentially hazardous weather conditions. Observations from thunderstorm sensorequipped AWOS can also be disseminated using existing communications facilities giving forecasters standardized and objective present weather data from a larger number of stations on a nearly continuous basis. Thus, meteorologists will be better prepared to issue the forecasts and warnings of adverse weather upon which we all rely. LLP thunderstorm sensors are affordable, in production, and available for immediate application. As the world's leading manufacturer of lightning locating systems, LLP stands behind each thunderstorm sensor with a proven track record for innovation, integrity, and reliability.
