2 Split-out group: Arctic and sub-arctic Intention of discussion identify potential CryoNet sites and stations for the Arctic and sub-arctic Participants: 1) China: Cunde Xiao 2) Japan: Katsuhisa Kawashima 3) Mongolia: Davaa Gombo 4) Norway: Oystein Godoy 5) Russia: Piotr Bogorodsky, Vasily Smolyanitsky (chair), Aleksandr Sokolov, Sergey Verkulish

3 Geographical domain: As a geographical domain the group proposed 1) to consider subartic as RA-II area without highmountain areas 2) to use an approach to the Artic as a whole without distinct subdivision into RA-II, IV or VI

4 Identified candidates sites: 1) Svalbard site based on Barentsburg infrastructure and/or SIOS (Svalbard Integrated Earth Observing System) with variables sea-ice, snow, glacier, permafrost. Proposal made by Sergey Verkulich, Russia and supported by Øystein Godoy, Norway. The site includes a number of stations with developed infrastructure dealing with practically all cryosphere components. Operators of the stations are national met Services and research institutes. The group agreed proposal very promising. Contact experts to proceed: S.Verkulich (AARI), Ø.Godoy (NMI). 2) Tavanbogd glacier, Mongolia proposed by Davaa Gombo. In addition to glacier the site has an AMS. Operator for the site is Information and Research Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology and Environment. The group noted that Mongolia does have a number of bore holes for permafrost but decision what bore hole could be optimal for CryoNet needs to be done. In addition, Mongolia carries out river/lake ice observations on ice thickness and phenomena on hydrological posts with observations further transmitted to Novosibirsk, Russia, for WMO GTS. 5 Identified candidates sites: 3) Belij island based on the island of the same name north of Yamal peninsula, proposed by Russia as a collaborative site of regional YANAO Administration, RAS and Roshydromet. The site is based on an existing Popov WMO meteostation (in operation from 1930s) and has permafrost, snow, fresh water and sea ice measurements. Operators will be regional government, Russian Academy of Science, Roshydromet. Contact experts to proceed : V.Pushkarev (YaNAO), P.Orekhov (RAS), A.Danilov (AARI)

6 Identified candidates sites: 4) [ Chersky site ] belonging to International Arctic Systems for Observing the Atmosphere (IASOA) is proposed as another candidate for CryoNet. 7 Identified candidates sites: 5) RAS (Aleksandr Sokolov,) proposed inclusion of INTERACT (International Network for Terrestrial Research and Monitoring in the Arctic - stations measuring permafrost parameters using Campbell Scientific equipment/. INTERACT offers access to 22 stations in the northernmost Europe and the Russian Federation. The project, which is funded by the EU, has a main objective to build capacity for identifying, understanding, predicting and responding to diverse environmental changes throughout the wide environmental and land-use envelopes of the Arctic. 8 Identified candidates sites: 6) Similar PEEX (Pan-Eurasian Experiment, set of stations was proposed by RAS (A.Sokolov). Evidently, long-term supported permafrost measurements may be available from the project and may serve as a contributing site to CryoNet. 9 Identified candidates sites: 7) IMB Ice Mass Balance program of drifting buoys providing hourly snow and sea ice thickness and 10cm temperature profiles (also for underlying sea water) was proposed by JCOMM ETSI/AARI (V.Smolyanitsky).
